“I Mean, This Is a Lot of Run Support” — Ashley Rodon. NY 15 Baltimore 3

Aaron Judge with his 9th homer of the year.

The game in Baltimore on a warm Tuesday night started out like this:

  1. Trent Grisham HR to right (412 feet)
  2. Aaron Judge HR to right (364 feet)
  3. Ben Rice HR to right (378 feet)
  4. Paul Goldschmidt ground out
  5. Cody Bellinger HR to right (403 feet)
  6. Jazz Chisholm Jr. triple to right (later changed to a double and error)
  7. Anthony Volpe double to left
  8. Austin Wells ground out
  9. Oswaldo Cabrera infield single
  10. Trent Grisham fly out.

Yankees 5 Baltimore 0

For the 2nd time this year, the first 3 Yankee batters of the game hit a homerun, setting a record. And for a few minutes, before Chisholm’s triple was changed to a double — the Yanks had also hit for the cycle in the 1st inning.

Against Orioles starter Kyle Gibson.

The Yanks weren’t done. Ben Rice hit another HR in the 2nd, and then in the 4th the Yanks made it 9-0 by scoring 3 more runs on a bunch of walks and singles. Finally Gibson was relieved.

The Yankees made it 12-0 with 3 more runs in the 5th on walks, singles, and a double against Matt Bowman.

“I mean, this is a lot of run support,” tweeted Yankee starter Carlos Rodon‘s wife Ashley Rodon.

Meanwhile — Carlos Rodon had a perfect game going into the 6th!

But Rodon walked a batter leading off the 6th to break up the perfect game, and a double by next batter (and former Yankee) Jorge Mateo broke up the no hitter.

Ian Hamilton and Tyler Matzek wrapped up; Austin Wells hit a HR later on.

Final score NY 15 Baltimore 3.

“It really starts with Grish,” said Aaron Judge afterwards about the HR barrage. “Grish got it going for us. He set the tone for us early on. When he goes up there, and takes a couple of tough pitches and sends one to Eutaw Street it’s pretty impressive and gets you going. It’s just kinda like ‘hey I gotta go out there and try and do my job’; it takes a little weight off of everyone’s shoulders once Grish goes out there and does that, which he’s done twice now. It was good. He started that.”

NY improves to 18-12; Baltimore drops to 11-18.

1. The 1st Inning

The game started at 6:35 on a beautiful 80-degree evening at Camden Yards, and went like this:

Homerun Trent Grisham

Homerun Aaron Judge

Homerun Ben Rice

Cody Bellinger was next — after a Paul Goldschmidt groundout. Cody hit a HR to right (403 feet).

Then Jazz Chisholm Jr. came up and seemed to injure his midsection (flank muscle) a bit after the first pitch. He paused out of the batter’s box — took a practice swing, and the Yank trainer came out. He stepped back into the box, and ripped a triple to right — sliding head-first into 3rd. And that did it for his oblique. He came out of the game.

“I took a swing on the first pitch, and I felt it a little bit,” said Chisholm afterwards. “I took a practice swing and didn’t feel like anything,” said Chisholm afterwards. “Then after I hit the triple I was like ‘it’s still kind of uncomfortable, let’s go in and get ready for tomorrow or Friday’. I’m ready to go.”

Anthony Volpe then doubled to left.

The rest of the inning: Austin Wells ground out; Oswaldo Cabrera infield single; Trent Grisham fly out.

2. Ben Rice’s Hits 2nd HR of Game in 2nd

Rice hit his 2nd homer in 2 innings in the 2nd:

3. Yanks Make It 9-0 in 4th

The Yanks finally chased Gibson in the 4th with a 3-run rally after 2 were out. Gibson got two groundouts to start the inning, but then a walk by Aaron Judge, a single by Ben Rice, and an RBI single by Paul Goldschmidt made it 6-0.

Cody Bellinger walked, and Oswald Peraza singled in 2 runs to make it 9-0 NY. And finally Gibson was yanked.

4. Yanks Make It 12-0 in 5th

The Yanks ripped Matt Bowman in the 5th — Oswaldo Cabrera singled with 1 out, Judge walked and Ben Rice was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Paul Goldschmidt singled in a run for a 10-0 lead.

Cody Bellinger ripped a double to right scoring 2 more and it was 12-0 NY.

5. Rodon with a Perfect Game into 6th

Meanwhile Carlos Rodon was perfect through 5 innings — striking out 1 in the 1st and 2nd, striking out 2 in the 3rd, and striking out 1 in the 4th and 5th along with a lot of groundouts.

He got help from his D — especially Anthony Volpe. With 1 out in the 2nd, Volpe made this play:

With 1 out in the bottom of the 5th, Volpe made this splendid play:

In the bottom of the 6th he went 3-0 to Rivera, then came back to go 3-2, allowed a foul ball, and walked him. Next batter Jorge Mateo doubled to right and both the perfect game and no hitter were gone.

“I had to pee so bad for so long, the you can’t move gets me at the worse times,” tweeted Rodon’s wife Ashley Rodon.

“I thought he had electric stuff tonite,” said Boone about Rodon. “Again had everything going. The fastball was really, really crispy. Just a really good job by him.”

Rodon allowed a groundout to score a run in the 6th, then allowed a solo HR to Gunnar Henderson leading off the 7th and was relieved by Ian Hamilton.

Rodon’s line: 6 IP, 2 Hits, 2 runs, 7 K’s, 1 walk. He wins to go 4-3 3.43.

6. Wells HR in 9th Gives NY 15-2 Lead

By the 9th inning, everyone in the Yankee lineup had a hit — except Austin Wells who was 0-5. And then Austin hit a homer to opposite field right.

7. Hamilton & Matzek Wrap Up

Ian Hamilton pitched a shutout 7th and 8th, and Ryan Matzek wrapped up by pitching the 9th — allowing a run to make it 15-3 —
