Determined by the Old “Sac Fly”. Mets 3 Yankees 2

DJ LeMahieu with a HR to opposite field for a 1-0 Yankee lead in 3rd.

Francisco Lindor hit a Sacrifice Fly in the top of the 9th to put the Mets ahead 3-2, and Edwin Diaz pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th for the save, striking out Aaron Judge on a 3-2 pitch, as the Mets beat the Yankees 3-2 at Yankee Stadium on a Beautiful Saturday afternoon — no more chem trails in the NYC area for day after day.

The Yanks had an early lead on a — get this — DJ LeMahieu homer, and then tied the game 2-2 on a Cody Bellinger HR in the bottom of the 6th.

That after Clarke Schmidt — after being lights out the first 3 innings — lost his release point in the 4th, walking 3 batters and allowing 2 singles and a sac fly for 2 Mets runs. Schmidt found his release point and didn’t allow another run into the 7th — finishing with 6 innings of 3-hit ball.

Griffin Canning started for the Mets and went 5.1 innings allowing 2 runs on 7 hits.

LeMahieu went 2-4 on the day and made a great play in the field at 2nd base. Jasson Dominguez aka The Martian went 2-3 with a walk to raise his average to .246 (.344 OBP); Anthony Volpe went 2-4 to raise his average to .242 (.332 OBP).

Judge had his worst day of the season at the plate — 0-5 with 3 strikeouts to lower his average to .402 (.488 OBP).

“Really encouraging to see him have that level of at bats in his first few outings here,” said manager Aaron Boone about LeMahieu. “He was phenomenal today.”

“Just lost the zone a little bit,” added Boone on Schmidt. “He was still pretty efficient; still had good stuff and making pitches. It’s a good offense that he had to navigate. He still pitches into the 7th inning, gives up only 2 runs on a day he walked 5. Overall it wasn’t perfect but pretty darn effective.”

The Yanks drop to 26-19, in 1st by 4 in the AL East over Boston and Toronto. The Mets improve to 29-17, in 1st in the NL East by 1.5 over Philly.

1. LeMahieu HR Makes It 1-0 Yanks

The Mets started 6’2 righty Griffin Canning, the 29-year-old who came up thru and spent the last 5 seasons with the Los Angeles Angels.

It was a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the 3rd when DJ LeMahieu rocked a shot to opposite field right for a solo HR. “The crowd is still buzzing” said Dave Sims on the radio minutes after the HR, as not many Yankee fans expected anything from DJ LeMahieu ever again, he has been so horrid the last few years.

2. Schmidt Loses His Release Point in 4th

Meanwhile Clarke Schmidt was buzzing through the Mets lineup with a Perfect Game going into the 4th.

But in the 4th Schmidt lost his release point. He walked Francisco Lindor to start the inning, allowed a single to Juan Soto, and an RBI single to left by Pete Alonso for a tie game.

Schmidt struck out Brandon Nimmo, but Vientos hit a sac fly to put the Mets up 2-1.

Schmidt then walked Jeff McNeil and Torrens to load the bases, before getting Brett Baty on a lineout to Judge in right. PHEW for Yankee fans.

Schmidt settled down to pitch a shutout 5th and 6th — walking Soto in the 5th but stranding him, and walking Nimmo in the 6th but getting a double play to erase him.

His line: 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 5 K’s, 5 walks — he lowers his ERA to 4.41.

3. Bellinger HR Ties It 2-2 in 6th

Meanwhile Canning was rope-a-doping the Yank lineup, scattering singles and walks. Until Cody Bellinger led off the bottom of the 6th with a shot to right for a 2-2 tie.

4. Martian Out at Home; Double-Steal Erased by Ump

Next batter Paul Goldschmidt grounded out, but Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Volpe had back-to-back singles to chase Canning.

With runners on 1st and 3rd and 1 out, Huascar Brazobann came in, and got J.C. Escarra to ground out to 1st — with The Martian out at home. It would prove a big missed opportunity for the Yanks.

The Martian and Volpe then executed a double steal — but the home plate ump called it back for his own interference.

Brazoban then got LeMahieu to ground out to end the inning.

5. Bellinger-Volpe Gun Down Runner with Perfect Relay

Schmidt allowed a leadoff single to Torrens in the 7th and was relieved by Mark Leiter Jr., who got Brett Baty to ground into a fielder’s choice — Luis Torrens out at 2nd.

But next batter Tyrone Taylor hit a double to left center that Cody Bellinger fielded off the wall and made a perfect throw to Anthony Volpe who then threw a STRIKE and Perfect relay throw home to just nail Baty at the plate.

DJ LeMahieu then stepped up with defense — making a spectacular stop of a liner up the middle and throwing to 1st for the final out of the inning, stranding the runner on 2nd.

6. Hill & Fernando Get Thru 8th

Tim Hill pitched the 8th, getting Juan Soto to fly out but allowing a double to Pete Alonso. Hill got Nimmo to ground out sending Alonso to 3rd — and Fernando Cruz came in to face the right-handed Matt Vientos — and struck him out on 4 filthy splitters.

7. Yanks Load Bases on Garrett in 8th

Meanwhile Huascar Brazoban pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 7th, and the Hill-Fernando pitching sent the game to the bottom of the 8th in a 2-2 tie — a perfect time for the Yanks to score a run and bring in Weaver for the win.

Reed Garrett came out to pitch the inning and walked Bellinger to lead off, but got Goldschmidt to hit into a double play.

Jasson Dominguez then worked a walk, and Anthony Volpe doubled to right — sending Dominguez to 3rd. J.C. Escarra walked to load the bases. But DJ LeMahieu lined out to right.

8. Fernando Blinks in 9th

But in the top of the 9th, Fernando allowed a 1-out walk to Luis Torrens, then an infield single to Baty. He hit Tyrone Taylor with a pitch to load the bases with 1 out, and Francisco Lindor delivered the killer Sac Fly to center. Mets 3 Yanks 2.

9. Diaz Saves It

And then to the bottom of the 9th where Ace Edwin Diaz struck out Austin Wells, got Ben Rice to line out to 3rd, and went 0-2 on Aaron Judge with the tying run at the plate. Judge worked the count to 3-2 — holding off on 3 sliders and fouling off a 100-MPH fastball before swinging and missing on a 98-MPH fastball for the old ballgame.
