Cody Bellinger hit a Grand Slam to cap a 6-run 8th, propelling the Yankees to an 8-2 win over the Mets on a beautiful Sunday night at Yankee Stadium.
The game was tied 2-2 when Jasson Dominguez came back from a 1-2 count to walk against Mets fireballing reliever Ryne Stanek, Austin Wells doubled to right, and Jorbit Vivas worked Stanek for a tough 11-pitch at bat, fouling off 100-MPH fastballs — before grounding the ball to Pete Alonso at 1st — who threw badly to home, allowing The Martian to score and put the Yanks up 3-2.
Paul Goldschmidt then singled to center to make it 4-2 Yankees, Trent Grisham walked off new reliever Genesis Cabrera, Aaron Judge struck out, but Bellinger hit a towering fly just into the short porch in right for the Grand Slam — putting the game away.
Bellinger’s 2-run double in the 1st gave the Yanks a 2-0 lead at the time.
Max Fried pitched 6 excellent innings of 3-hit ball — matched by the Mets 6’6 lefty David Peterson who pitched 6 innings of 3-hit ball. Jonathan Loaisiga, Devin Williams, and Tim Hill each pitched a shutout inning of relief.
Soto No Go
Juan Soto ended up going 1-10 in the 3-game series, with 3 walks, a great play in right, and several not-so-great plays. He also didn’t run out a grounder to 2nd that could have been a hit. Soto is now slashing 8-20-.246 (.379).
The players the Yanks signed in his stead — Bellinger, Goldschmidt, and Fried — excelled. Bellinger went 7-11 in the series, with 3 walks, 2 HR’s and 7 RBI and is now slashing 7-28-.258 (.331 OBP). Goldschmidt went 3-12 and is slashing 5-25-.339 (.389 OBP). Fried pitched another awesome start and is 6-0 1.29.
Boone’s Thoughts
“Outstanding,” said Aaron Boone afterwards about the Yankee rally in the 8th. “Dominguez falls behind in the count, and just does what he does — controls the zone really well — puts a great at bat on him. DJ put in a good at bat; got some good swings off; he’s able to get him though. And then Wells — he’s 2 strikes in there too.”
“And then Vivas — I mean what an AB man, “gushed Boone. “You could see his adjustment 3rd or 4th pitch in; you could see him settle in a little bit; settle down. Some great takes; some great battles. We got a break with the throw, although I don’t know with Jason coming down the line that fast. Goldy with a huge at bat. Grish working the walk when they brought in the lefty there. And then Belli capping it off. Pretty awesome 8th inning.”
The Yankees take 2 of 3 in the 3-game series, improving to 27-19, 5 games in 1st in the AL East. The Mets drop to 29-18, in 1st in the NL East by .5 game over Philly.
1. Yanks Get 2 in the 1st
The Yanks jumped on top in the bottom of the 1st against David Peterson — all started by a bobble and error by Mark Vientos at 3rd on a grounder by Paul Goldschmidt leading off the inning.
Trent Grisham flied out, but Aaron Judge ripped a grounds rule double sending Goldschmidt to 3rd. Judge was rebounding off his worst game of the season — an 0-5 with 3 strikeouts Saturday.
Cody Bellinger then ripped a double down the 1st base line for a 2-0 Yankee lead.

2. Fried Great Again
Max Fried threw another strong start. His 91-97 four-seam fastball was whistling, his 95-sinker was filthy, and his off speed pitches were tough.

Fried got touched up in the 2nd inning when he allowed an infield single to Mark Vientos, walked Brandon Nimmo, then struck out Starling Marte and Francisco Alvarez, but Jeff McNeil got him on an RBI single to center for a 2-1 game.
Fried was helped in the 3rd by a diving catch in right by Aaron Judge — reminding everyone once again that Judge should have won a Gold Glove by now (although he did win a Defensive Player of the Year Award by Wilson in 2019).

McNeil got another run for the Mets off Fried in the 5th — walking to lead off the inning, moving to 2nd on a bunt, moving to 3rd on a groundout, and scoring on a wild pitch for a 2-2 tie.
Other than that, Fried was dominant.

Fried’s line: 6 IP, 3 Hits, 2 runs, 8 K’s, 2 walks. His slash line is 6-0 1.29.
3. Peterson the Mets’ Monty
Meanwhile, after the 2 runs in the 1st (1 unearned), David Peterson was just as tough. Peterson is the Mets’ version of Jordan Montgomery — a 6’6 lefty who came up through the system and is very tough if unheralded.

The Yanks did load the bases on Peterson in the bottom of the 5th on a 1-out walk by Goldschmidt, 2-out intentional walk to Judge, and walk to Bellinger. But Anthony Volpe struck out.
4. Loaisiga Shutout Inning
More good news for the Yanks — Jonathan Loaisiga looked good again — in his 2nd relief appearance of the weekend, and the last year.
He struck out Brett Baty and Alvarez to start the 7th — both swinging, walked McNeil, then got a groundout to end the inning — that was booted by Oswald Peraza at 3rd.
With 2 outs and 2 on, Loaisiga got Francisco Lindor to line out to Judge in right for the 4th out of the inning. PHEW.
5. Volpe K’s Twice with Bases Loaded
The Yanks loaded the bases with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th off Huascar Brazoban on a 2-out walk by Trent Grisham, walk by Aaron Judge, and infield single by Cody Bellinger.
Anthony Volpe worked the count to 3-0 but then struck out.
6. Devin Shutout Inning
And more good news — Devin Williams looked great again — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th; ground out, line out, strike out of Mark Vientos swinging.
7. Yanks 6-Run 8th
The Yanks finally broke the 2-2 tie in the bottom of the 8th.
Fireballing Ryne Stanek was in for the Mets, with blonde hair flowing from the back of his cap like Noah Syndergaard used to have.
Jasson Dominguez worked back from a 1-2 count to walk.
DJ LeMahieu struck out but Austin Wells hit a 1-2 splitter for a double to right, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.
Jorbit Vivas worked an 0-2 count to an 11-pitch at bat, fouling off several 100-MPH fastballs — before hitting a grounder to 1st that Pete Alonso fielded, and threw home wide of the plate — past Alvarez to the backstop as the run scored. Yankees 3 Mets 2.

Lefty Genesis Cabrera came in for the Mets, and lefty Trent Grisham worked a walk to load the bases. Aaron Judge struck out, but Cody Bellinger hit the high towering fly to right for a short porch homer. Yankees 8 Mets 2.

8. Hill Wraps Up
Tim Hill pitched the 9th — getting Brandon Nimmo to fly out as the leadoff batter in a ho-hum incredible 14-pitch at bat.
Hill then two ground outs for a 1-2-3 inning and the old ballgame.
