Avalanche! LA Dodgers 18 NY Yankees 2

Aaron Judge with his 20th HR of the year, the 1st of 2 he hit in the game.

It wasn’t Will Warren‘s best day.

While most of NY was watching the Knicks lose and get eliminated in game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals, those checking the Yankee score were in for a Shock.

It was 10-0 Dodgers by the 2nd inning; 14-1 Dodgers by the 5th.

A closer look at the boxscore showed Will Warren shit the bed and Brent Headrick was brought in by the 2nd inning and offered no relief. Brent “Who?” Headrick to most Yankee fans.

It got worse later on as Mark Leiter Jr. got roughed up in the 5th, and even Luke Weaver allowed a run in the 7th when he came in to get some work (a 2-out solo HR to Andy Pages). It was 15-2 when Infielder Pablo Reyes pitched the 8th for NY, allowing 3 runs for the final score.

At least Aaron Judge hit 2 (two) Homeruns — his 20th and 21st of the season.

“Just a little off command, and then the heart of the plate with some pitches that obviously a dangerous group over there really made him pay,” said manager Aaron Boone about Warren. “And obviously having to work so hard as he did to get through that 1st inning, just obviously not his day.”

NY drops to 35-22, still in 1st in the AL East by 5.5 games over Tampa and Toronto. LA improves to 36-22, in 1st in the NL West by 3 games over San Diego.

1. Warren Pummeled

Will Warren had been brilliant in his last few starts. But didn’t have it this night. His control was off, and as Boone mentioned, he left some over the plate.

Shohei Ohtani led off the bottom of the 1st with a single. Warren struck out Teoscar Hernandez, but Freddie Freeman singled to left, Will Smith singled to right for a run, and Max Muncy singled to center for another run.

Warren walked Andy Pages and Michael Conforto hit a sac fly for a 3-0 Dodger lead. Then Tommy Edman doubled in a run and it was 4-0 Dodgers.

Warren walked Hyeseong Kim but struck out Ohtani to get out of the 1st at 39 pitches.

“That was it last there; he was the last batter,” said Boone afterwards about if he was about to pull Warren at 40 pitches. “Was hoping he’d settle in and give us a little something but obviously a rough one.”

Warren did not settle in by the 2nd — walking Teoscar Hernandez and Freddie Freeman to start the inning, then allowing a 1-out, 3-run HR to Kyle Muncy.

2. Headrick Pummeled

Headrick came in and was no relief — he got an out but then walked Conforto, allowed an RBI double by Tommy Edman to make it 8-0 Dodgers, and then a 2-run HR to Hyeseong Kim. Dodgers 10 Yankees 0.

3. Judge HR #20

Some good news for Yankee fans — Aaron Judge hit HR #20 on the year in the 4th– a 407-foot blast to left center off Dodger starter Landon Knack to make it a 10-1 game.

4. Knack Had the Knack

Other than that Knack had the knack — the 6’2 righthander pitched 6 innings of 5-hit, 1-run ball to go 3-2 4.58 on the year. The 27-year-old is in his 2nd season with the Dodgers, having come up through their system.

5. Judge HR #21

Aaron Judge hit HR number 21 on the season in the top of the 8th to make it a 15-2 game — a 425-foot blast to center off Chris Stratton.

6. Hamilton & Devin Pitched Good

Another bit of good news for the Yanks — Ian Hamilton pitched well again, as he continues to come out of an early-season slump. He pitched 2 innings of 0-hit, shutout ball — the 3rd and 4th innings.

Devin Williams also pitched well — relieving Yerry de Los Santos with bases loaded and 1 out in the 6th, and getting an inning-ending double play.

7. Infielders Finish the Game Pitching

The Yanks sent 3rd baseman Pablo Reyes out to pitch the bottom of the 8th, and he allowed 3 runs to make it 18-2 Dodgers.

The Dodgers returned the favor by pitching infielder Enrique Hernandez in the top of the 9th — he allowed a leadoff double to Jasson Dominguez, but got two groundouts and a fly out for the old ballgame.

Etcetera

Judge went 3-4 and is now batting .398. He singled in the 6th but was thrown out at 2nd trying to stretch the hit into a double.
