Gil Good. Weaver Good. Holmes Filthy. NY 5 LA Angels 2

Luis Gil grinded through 5 shutout innings, the Yankee offense gave him 5 runs, and the backend of the Yankee bullpen — Luke Weaver and Clay Holmes — shut down the LA Angels for a 5-2 win in the 1st game of a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium on a late Wednesday afternoon; game time start 4 pm.

Alex Verdugo, Austin Wells, Anthony Volpe, and Aaron Judge continued red hot — each driving in a run. Oswaldo Cabrera accounted for the other run with a solo homer in the 2nd.

“The 5th inning was probably his best inning,” said manager Aaron Boone about Gil. “I feel like he finally got into a rhythm there in the 5th and kind of found his delivery. He knew where he was; he knew he didn’t have a long leash there in the 5th inning. If anything went wrong I was going to the pen. It was big for him to finish the way he did, when it wasn’t easy. You look up and it’s 5 shutout innings on a day when it was a bit of a grind for him.”

NY improves to 68-46, a full game in 1st ahead of the Orioles. The Angels fall to 49-64.

1. Gil Great

Luis Gil wasn’t on top of his game, but ended with his 5th straight terrific start, with his slider especially filthy after Luis Severino gave him some tips to adjust it when the Yanks faced the Mets in late June.

Gil had trouble with his control in this start — walking 5 — but ended up pitching 5 innings of 2-hit shutout ball, striking out 6.

Gil improved his record to 12-5 3.06, and many consider him the leader for American League Rookie of the Year.

2. Wells & Volpe Make It 2-0 in 1st

Alex Verdugo, Austin Wells, and Anthony Volpe have been red hot lately — and the 3 combined for 2 Yankee runs in the bottom of the 1st against Angels starter Davis Daniel.

Verdugo led off with a grounds rule double, and after Juan Soto grounded out to move Verdugo to 3rd, Aaron Judge was intentionally walked and cleanup batter Austin Wells singled to left for a run.

Jazz Chisholm Jr.struck out, but Anthony Volpe got another Clutch, 2-out hit — an RBI double for a 2-0 Yankee lead.

3. Oswaldo HR Makes It 3-0 in 2nd

Oswaldo Cabrera homered to right off Daniel in the 2nd for a 3-0 Yankee lead.

4. Verdugo & Judge Make It 5-0 in 4th

The Yanks knocked Daniel out in the 4th — a leadoff walk by Ben Rice and 1-out double by Verdugo made it 4-0 NY and brought in Jose Marte.

Marte got Soto to ground out, but Aaron Judge got a Clutch, 2-out RBI single to left for a 5-0 NY lead.

5. Cousins Coughs Up 2-Run HR in 7th

Enyel De Los Santos pitched a shutout 6th for NY, but walked the first batter of the 7th and yielded to NFL star Kirk Cousins’ cousin Jake Cousins.

Cousins allowed a 2-run homer to the first batter he faced — Zach Neto — and it was 5-2 Yankees.

6. Weaver Good

Luke Weaver pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 8th, striking out the last 2 batters.

7. Holmes Filthy

Clay Holmes came into a save opportunity in the 9th — and pitched a 1-2-3 inning — strikeout, strikeout, groundout to 2nd and a great play by Oswaldo Cabrera for the old ballgame.
