Trevino Walkoff in 13th! NY Yankees 2 Chicago Cubs 1

Jose Trevino ripped a 2-out, RBI single to left in the bottom of the 13th inning for the walk-off game winner as the Yanks beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1 at Yankee Stadium.

Luis Severino threw down a good 6-inning start — 1 run and 10 strikeouts — and the Yankee bullpen threw down 7 shutout innings to gain the win. On a beautiful, 70-degree June Friday evening in the Bronx.

“This is the best crowd in baseball,” Trevino gushed as the cheers still rained down when interviewed on the field immediately afterwards. “It’s the best place to play. Nobody better; nowhere better.”

Trevino said the walk-off came on his son’s 4th birthday, making it extra special. His walk-off a month ago came on his dad’s birthday (his inspiration to baseball, who passed in 2013). Amazing stuff.

1. Gleyber Homer Puts Yanks Up

Luis Severino was matched against Wade Miley. Miley exited in the 3rd complaining of shoulder soreness. Reliever Daniel Norris came in, and yielded a homer to the first batter he faced, Gleyber Torres.

2. Severino Excellent

Severino meanwhile was terrific, hurling a shutout into the 5th, when he allowed a game-tying homer to Jason Heyward. He allowed 2 singles to the next 2 batters but got tough and struck out the next 2 batters, then, with 2nd and 3rd, 2 out — got a groundout to 3rd — a big turning point in the game.

Severino was helped by a great diving catch by Aaron Judge in centerfield in the top of the 3rd, with 2 out and 2 on, to end the inning.

Severino was also helped by a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play in the 6th — Kyle Higashioka throwing out Patrick Wisdom who went into 2nd standing up thinking it was ball 4.

Severino finished with 6 innings, 7 hits, 1 run, 10 K’s.

2. Yankee Bullpen Brilliant

The Yankee bullpen was brilliant.

  • Miguel Castro pitched a shutout inning,
  • Michael King pitched a shutout inning,
  • Clay Holmes pitched a shutout inning,
  • Clarke Schmidt pitched the 10th and 11th shutout innings — not allowing the inherited runner to score,
  • Wandy Peralta pitched the 12th — a shutout inning also not allowing the inherited runner to score, and
  • Ron Marinaccio pitched a shutout 13th — also not allowing the inherited runner to come home. He got the win.

3. Trevino the Walk-off

Meanwhile Chicago threw 9 pitchers at the Yankees — and they did some pretty good pitching themselves.

But in the bottom of the 13th, Jose Trevino pinch hit with 2 outs and runner on 3rd, and ripped the big game-winning walk-off off Alec Mills to left!
