Cole & the Pen Shut Out Tampa 2-0

Gerrit Cole pitched 6 shutout innings, and the Yankee bullpen of Wandy Peralta, Michael King, and Clay Holmes finished the job in beating Tampa, 2-0 on a beautiful June Tuesday night in the Bronx. Isiah Kiner-Falefa got the game winning hit, with a 2-out single in the 4th that drove in 2 runs due to an overthrow at home and excellent baserunning by Gleyber Torres.

1. Cole Shutout

Gerrit Cole bounced back from his previous poor start to shut down the Rays and outduel former Yankee Corey Kluber.

Cole said his execution was better in this start, and that was the difference. “Just on the corners a lot, unpredictable a lot; throwing 4 pitches well executed, well located,” said Cole afterwards.

Cole got out of a huge jam in the top of the 6th — inducing Randy Arozarena to ground into a bases-loaded, 1-out double play to keep the score 2-0.

“We got 4 or 5 weak contact hits that inning,” said Cole. “One of those pitches was poorly executed and we kind of got fortunate with Margot — we were trying to go down. But it was nice to finally get some of that weak contact rewarded, so we could get the double play.”

The DP ended a terrific night for Cole — 6 innings, 5 hits, 0 runs, 7 K’s, 1 walk.

2. Falefa Game Winner

Kluber pitched 6 innings and allowed 2 runs — both unearned. He was undone by his defense. In the 4th, Giancarlo Stanton walked, and Gleyber Torres hit a can-of-corn fly out to right, but Manuel Margot dropped the ball by the foul line in mid right field. Stanton raced to 3rd and Torres went to 2nd with terrific baserunning.

Kluber struck out Matt Carpenter for the 2nd out — but Isiah Kiner-Falefa got a huge 2-out single to center to plate Stanton, and also Torres who came home on an overthrow by Randy Arozarena. It was 2-0 NY and that’s all they needed.

3. Bullpen Finishes Job

Wandy Peralta got 2 outs in the 7th, but was relieved by Michael King with a runner on 2nd and 2 out. King got the final out of the 7th and pitched a shutout 8th, allowing only a walk.

In the 9th, Clay Holmes struck out the first 2 batters, allowed a single, then got a fly out for the old ballgame.
