Mike King’s 1st Start; Abreu’s 1st Appearance; but Tampa 5 NY 3; Aug 8, 2020 Game 2

It was Mike King‘s 1st start — and he was greeted by a double by Austin Meadows — one of the best young hitters in the game. King then struck out a batter and got a groundout — but then walked 3 straight batters to force in Meadows.

King Settled Down

King then settled down to carry the 1-hit ball into the 4th — and a Luke Voit RBI single tied the game in the 4th. But then King, after getting the 1st two batters in the 4th, walked 2 straight and was gone — relieved by Luis Avilan in a 1-1 game. Avilan walked a batter and then allowed a 2-RBI single to Meadows and it was 3-1 Tampa.

Overall — King looked pretty good.

Abreu’s 1st MLB Appearance

Albert Abreu made his 1st major league appearance — taking the mound for the 5th. He allowed a leadoff single, hit a batter, then settled down to get a fly out and strikeout before walking Kevin Kiermaier and allowing a single to catcher Kevan Smith and it was 5-1 Tampa and seemingly ballgame in the shortened 7-inning 2nd game of the doubleheader.

Boone Tossed; Yanks Get Back Into It

Yankee manager Aaron Boone got tossed in the top of the 5th for arguing with the home plate ump after Tampa pitchers threw high and inside to Yankee batters for the 3rd time with DJ LeMahieu getting buzzed by Andrew Kittredge (who had come in for an inning of relief). There was history here as Kittredge threw behind Yankee batter Austin Romine in a dustup in September 2018.

And later the Yanks got back into it when DJ LeMahieu got some revenge, singling in 2 in the 7th. He was at 2nd base with Aaron Judge up as the tieing run and two out. But Judge flied out to center off reliever Nick Anderson for the old ballgame. Another game where you could argue if it goes 9 innings, maybe the Yanks come back and win as they seemed to have momentum.

Yanks are now 10-5; Tampa 7-8.

Stanton to IL?

Some bad news for the Yanks — Giancarlo Stanton was pulled midway thru the game. He will receive an MRI and probably go on the IL — he said after the game that he felt his hamstring tighten.
