Yanks Thrash Orioles Twice in a Day — Aug 12, 2019: NY 11-8, 8-5

It’s getting to the point recently where the Yankees throw any old pitchers out there and win. In tonite’s 2nd game of the doubleheader thrashing of the O’s — it was Joe Mantiply pitching 3 innings of relief for “opener” Chad Green, followed 2.2 innings by Brady Lail. Both of them complete unknowns to most Yankee fans; both called up from AAA the day before. The two pitched 5.2 innings allowing 6 runs. But it didn’t matter; the Yankees won anyway. They were followed by Yankee old timer and pitching staff mainstay Nestor Cortes Jr. And he allowed 2 runs in the 9th — but it didn’t matter. Adam Ottavino got the last 2 outs (allowing a hit). Yanks 11 Baltimore 8.

It didn’t matter because the Yanks had built a HUGE 11-3 lead on the bats of Gleyber Torres (3 for 4, 2 homers, 6 RBI’s, now batting .338), Gio Urshela (3 for 5, 2 runs, now batting .332), DJ LeMahieu (3 for 4, 2 runs, now batting .338), and Brett Gardner (1 for 4 with a bases-loaded triple, 3 RBI).

It was the 12th home run of the year by Gleyber Torres against the Orioles, of his 25 home run total.

Yankee fans have assumed that this would be Brett Gardner‘s last year. Brett doesn’t think so — he has said he’s playing next year, some place. His recent torrid streak has raised his average to .258 (his lifetime average is .261) and his OBP on the season is now .338).

The only Yankee to NOT get a hit on the day: Aaron Judge, who went 0-3 with 2 walks in the 2nd game (got the 1st game off). His slump continues, lowering his average to .270. But he is at least walking — his OBP is .397.

Who is Joe Mantiply?

Joe Mantiply was originally drafted by the Mets and made it to the Majors for the Detroit Tigers in 2016. The Yankees selected him off waivers from Detroit in November 2016, and promptly released him a week later, then resigned him a week after that. He signed with the Cincinnati Reds in 2017, and was purchased by the Yankees on August 9, 2019 — 3 days ago. After the game, the Yankees designated Joe Mantiply for assignment.

Who Is Brady Lail?

Brady Lail was originally drafted by the Yanks and has been coming up thru their system — and was pitching well at Trenton this season (3-1 1.93, 28 IP, 17 H, 41 Strikeouts) and has done well so far at AAA Scranton-Wilkes Barre (11.1 IP, 11 strikeouts; 1-0 3.97). He is good friends with Domingo German, whom got him to smile in the dugout: “he tapped my leg and said, ‘you’re here!, you’re here!’ and he was just smiling ear to ear so I had to smile too”

Etcetera

For the Orioles, 2nd baseman Hector Alberto went 3 for 4 with 2 homers and 3 RBI. He is now batting .321.
