Yanks Advance to AL Championship Series — ALDS Game 3: NY 5 Minn 1

Luis Severino threw down 4 shutout innings to out duel Minnesota ace Jake Odorizzi, and then the Yankee bullpen came in to lock this game down — allowing the Yankees to extend a 2-0 lead through 4 innings to 3-0 in the 7th.

Gleyber Torres put the Yanks on top with a solo homer in the 2nd, and Brett Gardner singled in a run in the 3rd to make it 2-0. Didi Gregorius singled in a run in the 7th to make it 3-0. On the mound, Tommy Kahnle relieved Severino after 4 innings, and pitched 2/3 inning shutout ball before yielding to Adam Ottavino who walked his only batter but then it was Chad Green pivotally shutting down Minnesota for 1.1 innings.

The Only Trouble

Zack Britton got the last 2 outs of the 7th, the final out coming when he beat the batter to the 1st base bag but twinged his foot when he stepped on the bag. Yankee Twitter was concerned but rejoiced when Britton came out to start the 8th. However his sinker didn’t sink to rightfielder Eddie Rosario who hit a 412-foot homer to right, making it 3-1. After Britton got catcher Mitch Garver to ground out, the Yankee trainer came out and Britton was gone, replaced by Aroldis Chapman for a 5-out save.

The Yanks got back the run and then some in the top of the 9th — Cameron Maybin homered to right, Gleyber Torres doubled, Gary Sanchez walked, and Didi Gregorius continued his torrid hitting with a 2-RBI single to right for the 5-1 lead and the old ballgame and the old series win.

Chapman High Wire

But not until Chapman put his old high-wire in place in the 9th, allowing a lead-off single on an 0-2 pitch to 1st baseman Marwin Gonzalez, and then walking pinch hitter C.J. Cron, before striking out centerfielder Max Kepler. Shortstop Jorge Polanco then hit a shot to left which had single written all over it (which would’ve made it 5-2 with the tying run coming to the plate) but Didi Gregorius made a spectacular diving catch on it for the 2nd out. Chapman then struck out Nelson Cruz on a called strike 3 to end the game and series.

Etcetera

In this game, Minnesota fans were chanting “Over-rated” to Aaron Judge, bizzarely, after Judge played like Superman in this series both at the plate (batting .333) and in the field.

The Yanks now wait to play the winner of the Houston-Tampa series for the ALCS.

Gleyber Torres went 3 for 4 and batted .417 in the series. Didi batted .400 in the series.

After the game the Yankees announced that Britton was OK. Meanwhile, Aaroldis Chapman got hit by a stray bottle in the post-game celebration and was sporting a big cast on his pitching hand. The Yanks said he too was A-Ok.
