Like Deja Vu All Over Again. But Different — July 5, 2019: NY 8 Tampa 4

For the second night in a row, the Yanks went into extra innings against Tampa, and exploded for a bunch of runs in an extra inning to win going away, 8-4. It was Deja Vu all over again.

But Different

This time they scored their boat load of runs in the 11th (yesterday the 10th). This time they got an aerial Bomb from Aaron Judge in that 11th to take the lead, and a 3-run aerial by Brett Gardner to ice it.

This time, the Yanks did not blow a 3-1 lead in the 9th — they blew a 3-2 lead in the 7th, but came back to tie the game on a homerun by Aaron Boone in the 8th — off Tampa ace setup man Emilio Pagan who entered with a 1.64 ERA so it was no small feat.

This time Aroldis Chapman Got the save, recording the last 2 outs of the bottom of the 11th.

All hail David Hale again — he pitched 2.1 very important shutout innings — the 9th and the 10th, after Nestor Cortes Jr.did a fine job relieving Masahiro Tanaka in the 7th — Nestor entered with runners on 1st and 3rd,  got 2 strikes on Austin Meadows but hit him with a pitch to load the bases, got a big strikeout of Tommy Pham, and got 2 strikes on Kevin Kiermaier before yielding a single thru the left side of the infield for the tieing and go-ahead runs. Other than that he pitched well — a shutout 8th inning.

Masahiro Tanaka pitched well through 6 innings but tired in the 7th. He was matched by Tampa starter Brendan McKay.

Judge Starting a Homerun Tear?

Aaron Judge had started the scoring with an opposite field homerun in the 1st — so two homeruns on the night he is now sporting 9-20-.291 (.410 OBP) in 110 at bats after the long IL stint, and getting homerun hot.

Michael Tauchman played left and made some terrific defensive plays and as soon as you could retwet a tweet by KyleCTTB “I appreciate Tauchman’s defense. But let’s get Frazier back up here“, Tachman singled in two runs to put the Yanks up 3-1.

An Important Win

Just like the night before, this was a battle of 1st place Yanks vs 2nd place Tampa — with the win the Yanks are 57-29, 8.5 in front of Tampa; 11 ahead of Boston.

Etcetera

DJ LeMahieu went 1-5 and is still leading the American League in batting (.338) and is tied for the lead in RBI’s. Austin Romine caught Tanaka and got 2 hits; Gleyber Torres got 2 hits; Gio Urshela got 2 hits; Brett Gardner got 3 hits and has raised his average to .240 — he just won’t quit.
