The Yankees crushed Houston 10-6 on a thunderstorm-filled Thursday evening at the Stadium on a night opposite the NBA draft, which drew a lot of NY viewers away from the game as the Knicks had the #3 pick (RJ Barrett). The final score of 10-6 doesn’t sound like a crushing but it was 6-0 NY for the first half of the game, then 8-2, and 10-3 before Houston scored 3 in the 8th and 9th off David Hale to make it closer. With the win, and a Tampa loss, the Yanks moved to 4.5 games in 1st place; 7 over Boston. What a difference a week makes — 6 days earlier the Yanks had lost their 1st place lead to slip a half game back of Tampa.
Homerun After Homerun After Homerun
It was a Homer derby — in the 4th inning, Gary Sanchez hit a homer off Houston starter Framber Valdez to make it 1-0 NY, then Gleyber Torres hit a 3-run homer to make it 4-0, and DJ LeMahieu hit a 2-run homer later in the inning to make it 6-0.

Houston Homers Back
The Yanks had “Opener” Chad Green starting — and providing 2 more shutout innings to lower his ERA to 6.93 (it was once over 12.00), with Nestor Cortes Jr.pitching 3 solid innings of relief — although Cortes allowed back-to-back homers to Jake Marisnick and Alex Bregman in the 5th to make it 6-2.
Exchanging Wind Makers
Cameron Maybin doubled in 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th for 8-2 Yanks, but then Yordan Alvarez hit a homer in the 6th off Tommy Kahnle to make it 8-3. Edwin Encarnacion countered with a 2-run homer in the 7th to make it 10-3. Like a heavyweight fight of fighters exchanging wind makers.

David Hale was given the job of finishing the game. He couldn’t. In the 9th Marisnick hit another homer to make it 10-5. The tieing run came to the on-deck circle and Aaroldis Chapman came in to get the final out.
Ballgame
Other Yanks
Giancarlo Stanton went 3 for 4 without a homerun. Everyone in the Yankee lineup got a hit except Didi Gregorius. After the game, it was reported Aaron Judge will be here tomorrow. With Luis Cessa and Hale out of options, the Yanks will either need to cut Maybin or send Cortes down. Maybin has been fantastic so it is expected to be Cortes — who has also been fantastic but has options.
