Yanks Lose 9th of Last 12. Reasons Why Boston 7 NY 3 on 6-5-21

George Steinbrenner would have fired Aaron Boone by now. And Brian Cashman. After sweeping the White Sox two weeks ago to go 12-3 in their last 15, the Yanks have plummeted — losing 9 of 12.

They won 2 in a row vs Tampa earlier in the week and it looked like they were out of the slump. But NY has now lost 4 more in a row — against 1st-place Tampa and 2nd-place Boston.

Reasons how they lost this one:

1. Yanks Had Early Lead!

Gleyber Torres hit a 2-run homer in the 4th and the Yanks had a 2-0 lead. A win would give the Yanks a chance for a series win over Boston (having lost Friday night but with Sunday beckoning) and they did go 2-2 vs Tampa so optimistic Yankee fans were feeling good in the 5th inning of this game.

2. Taillon Pitched Well for 5

Jameson Taillon pitched shutout ball through 5 innings. In some innings he retired the side in order. He looked Great.

He was helped in the 1st by another great play at 3rd by Gio Urshela.

And then in the 6th, after getting the 1st out, Taillon allowed a single (Alex Verdugo), double (Xander Boegarts), single (Rafael Devers) for tie game 2-2 and was gone.

Jonathan Loaisiga game in and allowed a double to Marwin Gonzalez to give Boston a 3-2 lead.

3. Yanks Come Back

Down 3-2, the Yanks immediately came back to tie it in the bottom of the 6th — an Aaron Judge walk and Gio Urshela double put 2nd and 3rd, 1 out, and Gleyber Torres hit a sac fly to foul territory in right.

4. Green Didn’t Have It

Chad Green didn’t have it in the 8th. John Sterling noted on the radio that Green was working slower and more deliberately than he’d ever seen him work, and Suzyn Waldman agreed. Green got 2 outs after a leadoff single, but then a 2-out, 2-strike double by Enrique Hernandez, who was in an 0-27 slump, put Boston ahead 4-3.

With Green clearly taking time between pitches, and clearly struggling, many might think the manager would pull him at that point, but manager Aaron Boone stuck with him.

A double by Christian Vazquez made it 5-3. A 453-foot homer to center by Bobby Dalbec made it 7-3 and ballgame — and finally Boone came out of the dugout and pulled Green.

5. Yanks Tease in 9th

In the 9th with 2 out, the Yanks got 2 walks from Brandon Workman to force Boston to bring in closer Matt Barnes. The count went 2-0 on Kyle Higashioka and images of a walk and the tying run coming to the plate danced in the heads of optimistic Yankee fans. The count went 3-2.. the Yanks needed one more ball… But Higashioka struck out swinging.
