German Continues to Win — July 12, 2019: NY 4 Toronto 0

The Yankees shutting down Domingo German for most of June so he could rest his arm seems to have been a brilliant maneuver. German not making the All Star game and getting 4 more days of rest seems a god send. In this game Domingo German’s curveball was unhittable; his pitches moving — he again pitched brilliantly thru 6 innings and got the win to go 11-1 3.40.

German has been a Big Story developing in front of our very eyes this year, since Spring training. His curveball and overall movement on his pitches has been a joy to watch. He continues to win, win, win and pitch better later into the game. We saw the beginning of this last year — when he’d pitch well for 3 innings, but then run out of gas and allow homerun balls.

3rd Time thru the Lineup

This year — he has been regularly pitching to the 7th or 6th. Still, Suzyn Waldman reported that his ERA for the first 3 innings has been under 2.00, while in the 4-6th innings it has been over 6.00.

But his last two starts, after coming back from the June rest — he’s been terrific through 6 innings.

And that was the story of this game — besides the Yanks getting excellent relief pitching for Tommy Kahnle for 1 inning and Chad Green for 2 innings. Boy it’s nice to have Chad Green back again — he had been Horrible early this season, but went down to the minors and found his fastball — another brilliant maneuver by the Yankee pitching management.

3rd Time thru Lineup Dooms Toronto Starter

On offense, the Yanks were up against Aaron Sanchez, and it looked like they were going to make him look like Cy Young early — but they got to him the 3rd time thru the lineup, in the 5th.

Brett Gardner remains red hot, his career not dead but feeling much better — he tripled to lead off the 5th — his 5th triple of the season. DJ LeMahieu grounded him in; Aaron Judge singled; Aaron Hicks doubled; Gary Sanchez walked; and Edwin Encarnacion hit a bases-loaded triple to drive in 3 — just like that the Yanks were ALL OVER Sanchez. And that was ballgame.

Etcetera

After this game, Didi Gregorius tweeted a meme-filled tweet summarizing the game for the first time this season — he had become famous for doing it after every game last year. Yankee Twitter was atwatter on why he had started off the second half with a tweet after purposely not tweeting the entire first half of the season.

Gleyber Torres went 2 for 3 with a walk to raise his average to .296. DJ LeMahieu went 0-4 but still leads the AL in batting at .332. Lance Lynn leads the AL in wins with 12; German is 2nd with 11.

With the win the Yanks are 58-31, in first over Tampa by 6.5 games; Boston is 9 out.

During the game it was reported that former Met/Yank Dwight Gooden was arrested on charges of having cocaine. A sad story. Poor Dwight.
