Gerrit Cole Bombed. Hill & Hanner Bombed Worse. Mets 12 Yankees 2

Cody Bellinger hits solo HR in 6th to make it a 5-2 game.

Gerrit Cole was bombed for 5 runs on 9 hits and 3 Homeuns before being pulled with 1 out in the 5th inning and the Yankees down 5-1. Ryan Yarbrough came in to pitch 2.1 shutout innings so it was still a ballgame with the Yankees down 5-2 in the 7th.

But then Tim Hill and Bradley Hanner got bombed worse than Cole as the Mets ran off to a 12-2 win on a beautiful, sunny, 80-degree Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

Meanwhile, the Mets’ 24-year-old, 6’3 lefty rookie Zac Thornton shut the Yanks down for 2 runs in 7 innings.

Cody Bellinger drove in both Yankee runs with an RBI single in the 4th and a solo HR in the 6th. And Spencer Jones went 2 for 4 Again — he seems to do it every game. A few bright spots on a dreary gorgeous day for the Yankees.

“The hitters are seeing the ball well and being able to deliver good strikes to it, regardless of the pitch type or location,” said Gerrit Cole afterwards about his pitching. “I think it’s something we have to figure out. It’s just one of those times in the season you have to start making adjustments.”

The Yankees fall to 85-63, and are now 4 behind Tampa and 4.5 ahead of Boston. The Mets improve to 69-79.

1. Cole Bombed

Gerrit Cole:

  • Allowed a solo HR to Francisco Lindor leading off the game,
  • Allowed a 2-run HR to Luis Torrens in the 2nd — and then allowed 2 more singles before getting the final out,
  • Allowed a solo HR to Carson Benge in the 3rd to give the Mets a 4-0 lead.

Cole finally settled down to pitch a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th as the Yankees pulled within 4-1.

But then in the 5th, Cole allowed a leadoff double to Juan Soto and 1-out RBI single to Benge and was sent to the showers down 5-1.

2. Yarbrough 2.1 Shutout Innings

Ryan Yarbrough gave the Yanks a chance. He relieved Cole and got the last 2 outs of the 5th, pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 6th, and got the first 2 outs of the 7th in a 5-2 game.

3. Thornton Good — Bellinger Gets All RBI’s

The game might have been different if the Yanks had produced more offense against the Mets rookie lefty Zac Thornton. But he kept them in check with 7 innings of 5-hit, 2-run ball, striking out 4 and walking 1. He wins to go 4-5 3.44 on the season.

Thornton retired the first 9 batters of the game before Paul Goldschmidt led off the 4th with a double and Cody Bellinger drove him home with a 1-out single for a 4-1 game.

 

Thornton got the next 2 outs to end the 4th, then pitched a shutout 5th, after allowing a leadoff single to Spencer Jones.

Bellinger got Thornton again in the bottom of the 6th with a HR to right center for a 5-2 game.

The Yankees pressured Thornton in the bottom of the 7th, down 6-2 — when with 1 out Spencer Jones singled again, and George Lombard Jr. walked — but Thornton induced Anthony Volpe to hit into a doubleplay to end the inning.

4. Hill Bombed

Tim Hill relieved Yarbrough with 2 outs in the 7th to pitch to lefty Juan Soto — and coughed up a 400-foot HR to right center on a 2-2, 89-MPH four-seam fastball for a 6-2 game.

And then the game got away from Hill and the Yanks in the top of the 8th — after Hill got the first 2 outs, he allowed a single to Marcus Semien and walked A.J. Ewing.

5. Hanner Bombed

In came Bradley Hanner — the 27-year-old, 6’4 righty rookie reliever sporting a 6-3 2.44 record at AAA Scranton. And he didn’t do well: Luis Torrens ripped an RBI double to left, Nick Morabito walked, and Francisco Lindor hit a Grand Slam to right center for an 11-2 Mets lead.

Hanner got the final out of the inning, then allowed a 2-out HR to 1st baseman Jared Young in the top of the 9th to make it 12-2.

The Mets brought in 6’1 righty Tobias Myers for the 8th, and he pitched 2 shutout innings for the old ballgame.
