Austin Wells with a solo HR in the 3rd puts the Yankees up 2-0.

What a difference a day makes. And pitching.

The Yankees scored 2 runs for the 2nd day in a row –but this time won 2-0 (versus a 12-2 loss the day before) as Cam Schlittler pitched a 1-hit shutout through 6 innings, and the bullpen of Brent Headrick, Paul Blackburn, and David Bednar did the rest. Final score: Yankees 2 Mets 0 on a sunny, 80-degree, humid Sunday afternoon in the Bronx.

The Yankee runs were produced by a solo HR by Ben Rice in the 1st inning, and a solo HR by Austin Wells in the 3rd inning — both off Mets righty rookie Christian Scott.

Cam Schlittler’s line: 6 IP, 1 hit, 0 runs, 8 K’s, 2 walks. He gets the win to go 14-6 1.95.

“I think valuable is a good word,” said manager Aaron Boone about Cam Schlittler. “He might be the MVP too. He’s been awesome. Just an awesome season, and hopefully a lot left in the tank for what we hope is another month and a half or so. Another strong outing against a club that’s swinging the bat really well.”

The Yankees take 2 of 3 in the weekend series and improve to 86-63, still 4 back of Tampa and 4.5 over Boston. The Mets fall to 69-80.

1. Rice HR Puts Yanks Up 1-0 in 1st

The Mets started 27-year-old, 6’4 rookie righty Christian Scott, who came in with a 4-4 3.81 record.

Ben Rice got to him leading off the game for the Yankees in the bottom of the 1st — hitting a 1-2 splitter 333 feet into the short porch in right for a 1-0 Bomber lead.

2. Wells HR Puts Yanks Up 2-0 in 3rd

Scott then retired 6 batters in a row, getting the next 3 outs in the 1st and pitching a 1-2-3 shutout 2nd inning.

But Austin Wells led off the bottom of the 3rd by hitting a first-pitch 95-MPH four-seam fastball 392 feet deep into the right field stands for a 2-0 Yankee lead.

3. Schlittler Scintillating for 6

And that was it for the run scoring.

Cam Schlittler, on the hill for the Yanks — was in total control buzz sawing through the Mets lineup in the hot sun.

Schlittler pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 1st, allowed just a 1-out walk in the 2nd, allowed just a 2-out walk in the 3rd, and pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th — carrying a no hitter into the 5th.

Wells was helped in the 3rd by a sparkling defensive play at 2nd by Anthony Volpe.

Cam allowed a 2-out double to Brett Baty in the 5th, then got a groundout to end the inning. He pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 6th — striking out the first 2 batters before Bo Bichette hit a line drive off Cam’s back leg that Austin Wells picked up and threw to 1st for the out.

Cam was at 94 pitches so probably would not have come out for the 7th even if he hadn’t been hit in the leg with the line drive. He is expected to be sore a few days and be fine for his next start.

4. Headrick Pitches Shutout 7th

Brent Headrick came in for the 7th in the 2-0 game, and got line out, strikeout, fly out for a 1-2-3 shutout inning.

5. Blackburn Pitches Shutout 8th

Former Met Paul Blackburn — who the Yankees picked up last August when the Mets put him on waivers — came in for the 8th, and allowed a leadoff single to Francisco Alvarez — but then got fly out, fielder’s choice groundout, and fly out for a shutout inning.

6. Warren & Lavender Finish for Mets

Christian Scott pitched well sans the 2 solo HR’s. His line:

The Mets brought in 26-year-old, 6’2 lefty Nate Lavender to pitch the 7th. He walked Anthony Volpe with 1 out but got a fly out and strike out to end the inning.

30-year-old, 6’0 righty Austin Warren came in to pitch the 8th. He walked Ben Rice with 1 out but got Cody Bellinger to ground into a double play to end the inning.

7. Bednar the Non-Agita Save

So it was to the 9th and the Yankees holding on to a 2-0 lead.

David Bednar came in and struck out Juan Soto before allowing a 1-out single to Bo Bichette.

With the tying run at the plate, Bednar got Carson Benge to ground into a fielder’s choice to 1st base for the 2nd out, and then got Jared Young to fly out to medium center for the old ballgame.
