Ryan Weathers pitched 7 innings of 3-hit shutout baseball and the Yankee bullpen did good too — but they were matched by Sean Burke and the White Sox bullpen — resulting in a 0-0 tie into extra innings before the Yanks were edged out 2-1 in 11. On a Thursday afternoon on the South side of Chicago.
NY took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 10th when Trent Grisham singled in the inherited runner — but Andrew Benintendi did the same in the bottom of the 10th.
Chicago walked it off when Fernando Cruz threw 4 straight balls to Tristan Peters with bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th.
Both teams only got 6 hits on the day. The Yanks ended up 1-15 with a runner in scoring position.
“We have to score a freaking point,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “The pitchers again did their job. Obviously Stormy was great to get us going. The bullpen was good including Cruz. We have to score. That’s the story — the beginning and end of it.”
The 2 teams split the 4-game series, with Chicago winning the last 2 games in extra innings. NY falls to 61-48, and fall to 3.5 behind Tampa and are 3.5 ahead of Boston. Chicago improves to 57-51, in 1st by 2 over Cleveland in the AL Central.
1. Weathers Is Great
Ryan Weathers — aka “Stormy” as Boone calls him — was Great — using his 85-MPH changeup and 94-MPH sinker throughout the afternoon to shut the White Sox down.
He got into a little trouble in the 1st — allowing a 1-out single to Munetaka Murakami and 2-out double to former Yank Randal Grichuk — but got Colson Montgomery to ground out to strand the runners.
Weathers wouldn’t allow another hit until a 1-out single by Grichuk in the 6th. In between he scattered 3 walks — one in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Weathers finished with a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th. The score: 0-0.
2. Burke Strikes Out Everybody
Meanwhile 26-year-old, 6’6 righty Sean Burke — who came in with a 7-5 3.19 record — was striking out everybody. The Yanks actually got the first 2 batters of the game on base — Trent Grisham reaching on catcher’s interference and Ben Rice walking — but Burke struck out Jasson Dominguez and Paul Goldschmidt, and got Spencer Jones to fly out.
Burke then struck out the side 1-2-3 in the 2nd, and struck out the first 2 batters in the 3rd. He struck out the first 2 batters of the 4th — and had struck out 9 batters of the 11 outs recorded.

Spencer Jones broke up Burke’s no-hitter with a 2-out single in the 4th — meaning he was the only Yankee who was able to hit the ball twice off Burke to that point — a good sign for the Yankees.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. worked a walk after Spencer’s single — but Burke struck out Anthony Volpe to end the inning.
And after that Burke stopped striking people out — and NY started to get to him. Austin Wells doubled with 1 out in the 5th, but Trent Grisham hit a line drive that was caught in center, and Ben Rice lined out to shortstop. The Yanks came ‘this’ close to a run.
Jasson Dominguez led off the 6th with a double — but was gunned down trying to stretch it into a triple when he over-slid the bag.

Paul Goldschmidt and Spencer Jones then flied out to deep right and Burke had 6 shutout innings.
3. ChiSox Bullpen Shuts Down NY
6’5 lefty Sean Newcomb came in for the 7th and allowed a leadoff single to Jazz Chisholm Jr. — but then got 2 outs and picked Chisholm off 1st.
Newcomb allowed a 1-out single to Trent Grisham and walk to Ben Rice in the 8th — but struck out The Martian and got Paul Goldschmidt to fly out to right to end the inning — stranding the runner in scoring position at 2nd.

6’8 lefty Bryan Hudson pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 9th.
4. Headrick Great; Chivilli Great in 9th
On the Yankees side, Brent Headrick was great again — pitching a shutout 8th.
And Angel Chivilli looked great again — pitching a shutout 9th; striking out the first 2 batters of the inning.

5. Grisham RBI Single Puts NY Up 1-0 in 10th
The Yanks finally got a run when Trent Grisham singled with 1 out in the top of the 10th off 6’1 lefty Chris Murphy, scoring the inherited runner.

6. Cruz Great in 10th — But Loses It in 11th
But Angel Chivilli couldn’t hold the inherited runner from scoring in the bottom of the 10th. Chivilli struck out Braden Montgomery to start the inning — so things were looking good — but Andrew Benintendi singled up the middle “just past” a diving Anthony Volpe for a tie game 1-1.
Edgar Quero followed with a single to put runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out — and Fernando Cruz came in to get a HUGE double play to end the inning.

But Cruz ended up losing the game in the bottom of the 11th. Righty Seranthony Dominguez pitched a shutout top of 11th and Cruz returned to the mound to try and hold the inherited runner at 2nd in the bottom of the 11th.
He intentionally walked Murakami to begin the inning, struck out Miguel Vargas, but allowed an infield single to Sam Antonacci to load the bases with 1 out.
Cruz went 3-0 to Colson Montgomery with the bases loaded — then came back with 3 straight strikes — a fastball, slider, and splitter — to strike him out.
The Yanks were an out away from sending the game to the 12th. But Fernando Cruz threw 4 straight fastballs that didn’t hit the strike zone for a walk and the old ballgame.
