Elite Yankee pitching prospect Elmer Rodriguez made his major league debut and worked around some wildness to pitch a shutout into the 5th — but went down to defeat as former Yankee Nathan Eovaldi and the Rangers’ pen shut NY out for a 3-0 win on a Wednesday night in Texas.
Eovaldi threw 7 shutout innings and Jacob Latz finished the job with 2 innings of 1-hit relief.
“I thought his stuff was good,” said manager Aaron Boone about Elmer Rodriguez. “Obviously strike throwing wasn’t as sharp as it going to be with him and typically is. Walked 4 and hit a batter. A lot of good out there. You saw his stuff play. His mix of 2 seam and 4 seam and spinning it a bit was good. A little better on the strike-throwing part and it’s a different line. Kept us in the game and gave us a chance.”
NY falls to 20-11, in 1st in the AL East by 1.5 games over Tampa. Texas improves to 15-16, and salvages a game in the 3-game set.
1. Elmer’s MLB Debut Pretty Good
Elmer Rodriguez is a 22-year-old, 6’4 righthander who is the #3 prospect in the Yankee organization and #2 pitching prospect behind Carlos Lagrange. NY received him in a trade with the Red Sox for catcher Carlos Narvaez 2 years ago. Narvaez has become the starting Boston catcher, and Rodriguez was up for his first MLB start.
And he did good, although he was a bit wild.
Rodriguez walked Brandon Nimmo to lead off the bottom of the 1st, but then struck out Josh Jung while Nimmo was thrown out by J.C. Escarra trying to steal 2nd. Nimmo was originally called safe but was out on the Yankee challenge.

Rodriguez then walked Corey Seager before getting a lineout to end the 1st.
In the 2nd, Rodriguez got the first 2 outs, then allowed single, walk, single to load the bases before getting the final out.
Rodriguez then settled down — retiring 6 in a row — getting 3 straight flyouts in the 3rd, and groundout, popout, strikeout in the 4th. He sported a 95-MPH four-seam fastball, 94-MPH sinker, and an 80-MPH frisbee slider.

But Rodriguez fell apart in the 5th — a hit-by-pitch, walk, and infield single loaded the bases to start the inning, and Jung singled in 2 runs for a 2-0 Texas lead.

2. Headrick Terrific Relief in 5th
With runners on 1st and 2nd and still nobody out, Brent Headrick came in and the big 6’6 lefty did a fine job — strikeout, groundout, flyout to end the inning.
3. Eovaldi in Top Form with 7 Shutout Innings
Meanwhile Nate Eovaldi — former Yankee and also long-time Yankee nemesis — was in his usual form.
He scattered singles and got double plays to work around any baserunners.
Eovaldi:
- Worked around a single by Ben Rice in the 1st,
- Worked around an error in the 2nd,
- Pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd,
- Worked around a single by Cody Bellinger and hit-by-pitch of Jasson Dominguez in the 4th.
- Allowed a single to Jose Caballero in the 5th but got a doubleplay to end the inning.
- Allowed a single to Ben Rice in the 6th but got a doubleplay to end the inning.
- Worked around a walk in the 7th and finished with 7 shutout innings.
“His splitter was really good today,” said Boone about Eovaldi. “He hasn’t gotten off to a typical Nate start, but today looked typical Nate. Command was good. His splitter and mix of 4-seam, cutter, dropped in some really good curveballs.. he was on his game today.”

4. Bird Allows Run in 7th
Jake Bird relieved Headrick in the 6th and got the last 2 outs of the inning, but allowed a leadoff double in the 7th to Ezequiel Duran and RBI single to pinch hitter Sam Haggerty for a 3-0 game.
5. Latz Shuts Yanks Out in 8th and 9th
Jacob Latz, a 30-year-old, 6’2 lefty, came in and pitched a shutout 8th and 9th — allowing but a 2-out single to Ben Rice in the 8th, and throwing a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th (groundout, flyout, popout) for the old ballgame.

Jasson Dominguez was hit by a pitch by Eovaldi in the 4th and had to leave the game.

The game featured a fight between a Yankee fan and several Rangers fans in the stands — which went viral.
