Schlittler Outduels deGrom. NY 3 Texas 2

Aaron Judge hits his 12th HR of the year in the 9th inning -- an important insurance run to put NY up 3-0 at the time. Judge now is tied for the MLB lead in HR's.

Cam Schlittler out-dueled Jacob deGrom, pitching 6 shutout innings of 3-hit ball, striking out 8 and walking 2 for a 3-2 Yankee win on a Tuesday night in Texas.

deGrom also pitched 6 innings of 3-hit ball — but allowed an RBI double to Cody Bellinger with 2 outs in the 1st, scoring Aaron Judge who had singled in front of him — and that proved to be the game-winning RBI.

Austin Wells added a solo HR in the top of the 7th against reliever Jalen Beeks, and Aaron Judge added an insurance HR in the 9th off Cole Winn — both important runs as Texas rallied for 2 runs in the 9th before David Bednar got a double play to end the game.

Brent Headrick and Fernando Cruz pitched shutout innings in the 7th and 8th for NY.

Schlittler goes to 4-1 1.51 on the season; deGrom falls to 2-1 2.01.

“He’s a superstar,” said Yanks reliever Fernando Cruz about Schlittler. “What he’s doing is really impressive — throwing three pitches at one speed, but they’re going different directions. It’s something you don’t see too often in baseball. Right now, he’s one of the best to step on the field.”

NY wins the first 2 games of the 3-game series and improves to 20-10; Texas falls to 14-16.

1. Judge & Bellinger Nip deGrom for Run in 1st

Jacob deGrom is now 38 years old, but he is still one of the best pitchers in baseball. He was derailed by arm injuries from 2021 through 2024, but in 2025 rebounded with a 12-8 2.97 slash line for Texas.

deGrom came into this game with a 2-0 2.13 slash line. But the Yanks got to him with 2 outs in the top of the 1st when Aaron Judge singled to center, and Cody Bellinger doubled him home.

2. Schlittler Masterpiece

The Rangers almost got to Schlittler in the bottom of the 1st — but Yankee outfielders came to his aid.

Brandon Nimmo led off with a line drive to left that Cody Bellinger made a tremendous catch on for the first out.

Next batter Josh Jung hit a liner to center that Trent Grisham made a tremendous catch on.

Corey Seager then doubled to right, before Schlittler struck out Joc Pederson to end the inning.

After that Schlittler settled down and was absolute aces:

  • A 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd,
  • Allowing but a 2-out hit in the 3rd,
  • A 1-2-3 inning in the 4th, and
  • Allowing but a 1-out walk in the 5th,
  • Allowing a leadoff walk and single to start the 6th — but getting strikeout, popout and fly out to end the threat for a 1-0 Yankee lead through 6 innings.

3. deGrom & Schlittler Lock into Pitcher’s Duel

deGrom settled down also — retiring 16 of the next 18 batters — allowing just a baserunner in the 4th due to a 1-out error by 2nd baseman Smith, and a leadoff single to Austin Wells in the 5th.

4. Wells HR in 7th Makes it 2-0 NY

deGrom left after 6 innings and the Yankees pounced — Austin Wells hitting a solo HR to right with 2 outs in the 7th off Jalen Beeks. NY 2 Texas 0.

5. Headrick & Cruz Throw Shutout 7th & 8th

Brent Headrick pitched a shutout 7th — working around a leadoff single and 2-out walk.

Fernando Cruz pitched in and out of trouble in the 8th — allowing a leadoff single to Josh Jung, then walking Corey Seager, but making a tremendous play on a bunt to nab Jung at 3rd for the 1st out — then striking out Jake Burger and Ezequiel Duran to end the inning.

6. Judge BOMB  in 9th Makes It 3-0 NY

And Aaron Judge pounced leading off the top of the 9th — hitting a 424-foot BOMB to left off Cole Winn for a 3-0 Yankee lead.

7. Bednar Works thru Error and Jam in 9th

David Bednar came into the 3-0 game to start the bottom of the 9th and got a fly out to start the inning.

But Ryan McMahon made a throwing error to put 39-year-old Andrew McCutchen on, and next batter Danny Jansen ripped an RBI triple to left for a 3-1 game. Bednar then hit Brandon Nimmo with a pitch, and Josh Jung singled to left to make it a 3-2 game, with the tying run on 2nd.

But Bednar got Corey Seager to hit a 89-MPH cutter for a double play grounder — Chisholm to Caballero to Rice at 1st for the old ballgame.
