This is getting to be the headline for every Max Fried start — this time Aaron Judge, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Ben Rice hit HR’s to back another Max Fried gem — 6 innings of 4-hit shutout ball, striking out 5 and walking 2 — and the Yankee pen closed it for a 4-2 win on a Monday night in Texas.
David Bednar survived an error by Jazz Chisholm Jr. on a game-ending grounder in the 9th, which was followed by an RBI single to make it a 4-2 game and put the tying run on 1st. But Bednar got a groundout to end it.
NY beat Mark Leiter Jr, who pitched well except for the 3 HR balls.
Judge went 3-3 with a hit-by-pitch, along with the HR — he raised his average to .252.
“Just competed really well,” said manager Aaron Boone about Fried. ‘Had a little bit of everything; the defensive side — controlling the running game; gets a big out there. The couple of times where they pressured him a little bit, and extended some at bats against him, he was able to execute some big pitches.”
NY improves to 19-10; Texas falls to 14-15.
1. Rice & Judge Go Back-to-Back in 3rd
Jack Leiter, the 26-year-old, 6’1 righthander and elite prospect is in his 2nd season with Texas, after having gone 10-10 3.86 as a rookie last year.
He was pitching a shutout into the 3rd when with 1 out Jose Caballero singled to center — but was thrown out trying to steal 2nd.
But with 2 outs, Trent Grisham reached on an infield single, and Ben Rice hit a 404-foot HR to center for a 2-0 Yankee lead.

Next batter Aaron Judge hit a 414-foot bomb to left for his 11th HR of the year and a 3-0 Yankee lead.

2. Chisholm HR in 4th Makes It 4-0 NY
Jazz Chisholm Jr. then led off the 4th with a 406-foot HR to right center and it was 4-0 NY.

After that Leiter pitched a shutout 5th and 6th — an overall decent outing.
3. Fried Fantastic
But Max Fried was fantastic — 6 innings of shutout ball, scattering 4 hits — and eliminating the few baserunners he allowed with double plays or pickoffs.
Fried allowed an infield single in the 1st, but got a double play grounder to end the inning, allowed but a 2-out single in the 2nd, and pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd.
In the 4th he allowed a leadoff single to Josh Jung — but immediately picked him off 1st.

Fried pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 5th, and allowed a 1-out single in the 6th — before getting another double play.

4. Doval Allows HR in 7th
Camilo Doval pitched the 7th — allowing a 1-out solo HR to Joc Pederson to make it a 4-1 game — but getting the next 2 batters with a strikeout and popup.
5. Hill Throws Shutout 8th
Tim Hill got groundout, walk, groundout, walk, groundout for a shutout 8th — sending the game to the 9th with NY leading 4-1.
6. Bednar Gets Out of Trouble for Save
David Bednar allowed a leadoff infield single to 2nd by Burger to start the 9th — but then got a groundout to 2nd and a strikeout.
With 2 outs, Bednar got a grounder to 2nd that Chisholm muffed for an error — putting runners on 1st and 3rd. Next batter Alejandro Osuna singled to center to make it 4-2, with runners on 1st and 2nd.
But Bednar got Ezequiel Duran to hit a fielder’s choice grounder to Caballero at shortstop for the old ballgame.
