The Yankee bullpen was ‘this close’ to being the hero — with Luke Weaver, Camilo Doval, and David Bednar each pitching a shutout inning to protect a 5-4 lead for Max Fried.
But in the 9th, Devin Williams blew the save, allowing a 1-out solo HR to pinch hitter Joc Pederson — who was 4 for his last 36 and batting .132 — to tie the game 5-5. And in the 10th, with 2 outs, Jake Bird coughed up a 3-run Blast to Josh Jung for the 8-5 loss.
On a Monday night in Texas.
“Looked like a changeup stayed there,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards about Pederson’s HR off Devin Williams. “Obviously I’m sure hunting it a little bit. Had the count in his favor. Maybe not the depth on that pitch tonite. Just kind of sat up for him. And a veteran hitter went up looking for it and got it.”
NY drops to 60-53, and are now 5.5 behind Toronto and 2.5 behind Boston. Texas improves to 59-55.
1. Goldy HR’s to Lead Off
Paul Goldschmidt was put into the leadoff spot as he has the highest batting average this year in the American League against lefties, and NY was up against lefty Patrick Corbin, who came in with a 6-7 3.78 record.
And the move paid off as Paul Goldschmidt led off the game with a 419-foot, solo HR to left for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

Amed Rosario followed the HR with a double, and then Giancarlo Stanton and Jazz Chisholm Jr. walked in between 2 outs — but Anthony Volpe struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning.
2. Yanks Take 3-0 Lead in 2nd
But the Yanks were right back at Corbin in the 2nd — a leadoff single by Austin Wells, a 1-out double by Paul Goldschmidt, and an RBI single by Amed Rosario put NY up 2-0.

Cody Bellinger followed with an RBI single to left for a 3-0 Yankee lead.

Corbin threw a wild pitch to put runners on 2nd and 3rd, then intentionally walked Giancarlo Stanton to load the bases — but struck out Jasson Dominguez and got Chisholm to fly out to end the threat.
So for a 2nd inning in a row the Yanks left the bases loaded — missed opportunities that would come back to haunt.
3. Fried Coughs up 4 Runs in 2nd
Max Fried looked good initially, pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st.

But Fried got singled to death in the 2nd. He struck out the 1st batter, but then allowed in consecutive order:
- A double to centerfielder Wyatt Langford,
- A walk to DH Josh Jung,
- An RBI single to 3rd baseman Josh Smith for a 3-1 game,
- An infield single to catcher Jonah Heim,
- A 2-RBI single to 1st baseman Ezequiel Duran for a 3-3 game,
- A wild pickoff to 2nd, throwing the ball away as the runner scored for a 4-3 game.
Fried struggled through the 3rd — walking a batter but picking him off 1st, then allowing a single but getting out of the inning.
And Fried struggled in the 4th — allowing a leadoff walk and single — before getting a groundout and strike out, and then a groundout on a terrific play by Anthony Volpe and pick by Goldschmidt at 1st for the final out — with runners on 2nd and 3rd.

4. Stanton HR Puts NY Up 5-4 in 4th
Patrick Corbin settled down to pitch a 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd, but he was removed after 72 pitches for 6’4 righty Jon Gray to start the 4th.
And Paul Goldschmidt met him with a single to left — his 3rd hit of the game. Gray struck out Rosario and got Bellinger to foul out.
But Giancarlo Stanton hit a Piss Missile to center for a 5-4 Yankee lead.

5. Weaver a Shutout 6th
Given back a 5-4 lead by a Stanton HR in the top of the 5th, Fried finally got cooking in the bottom of the 5th — strike out, single, strike out, strike out to end his outing. Fried’s line: 5 IP, 8 hits, 4 runs, 7 K’s, 3 walks. His ERA goes to 2.78.
Luke Weaver came in for the 6th — and shut down Texas 1-2-3 — fly out, strike out, fly out.
6. Doval a Shutout 7th
Boone trotted out Camilo Doval for the 7th — and he shut down Texas 1-2-3 — ground out, ground out, strike out.
7. Bednar a Shutout 8th
Boone trotted out David Bednar for the 8th — and he shut down Texas 1-2-3 — strike out, ground out, ground out.
8. Devin Blows the Save in 9th
And then to the 9th — Gray stayed in to pitch 5 innings and not allow another run after Stanton’s HR, allowing just a single in the 6th, and pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th and 8th. Luis Curvelo followed with a shutout 9th and so it was to the bottom of the 9th, NY up 5-4.
Boone trotted out Devin Williams for the save.
Williams got the first out — Kyle Higashioka grounded out.
But Joc Pederson — pinch hitting — hit a 408-foot HR to right and it was a tie game.

9. Bird Coughs Up Game in 10th
The Yanks looked like they might score their inherited runner in the top of the 10th, as Jazz Chisholm led off with a groundout that moved the runner to 3rd with 1 out, and Anthony Volpe walked. But Austin Wells hit into a double play.
And so it was to the bottom of the 10th — and Boone trotted out Jake Bird.
And Bird was ‘this close’ to being a hero.
He struck out Marcus Semien, and got Adolis Garcia to ground out. With 2 outs, and the inherited runner on 3rd, he intentionally walked Wyatt Langford.
But Josh Jung ripped a 3-run HR to left center for the old ballgame.
