Yanks Blow It Open with 5 Runs in 8th. NY 9 Boston 2

Amed Rosario rips a shot off the right-field wall in the bottom of the 8th to drive in a run and make it a 5-2 game.

Max Fried and the Yankees took an early 3-1 lead, and carried a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the 8th — when the NY offense broke the game open with 5 runs for a 9-2 win over the Red Sox on a beautiful Saturday night at Yankee Stadium — splitting a day-night doubleheader (Boston taking the 1st game 6-0).

New Yankee Luis Garcia Jr. continued to hit hit hit — he went 3 for 4 with an RBI and run scored. Ben Rice went 2 for 5 with 3 RBI’s. Amed Rosario and Jose Caballero got 2 hits each. Spencer Jones and Austin Wells and George Lombard Jr. and Cody Bellinger joined the hit parade as NY banged out 13 hits.

Fried — pitching for the first time since being placed on the 15-day Injury List — threw 3.2 innings on a pitch count. The Yankee bullpen came in to allow Boston only 1 run in 5.1 innings — Yerry de los Santos, Michael Fulmer, Paul Blackburn, Tim Hill, Brent Headrick, and rookie Bruce Beck all pitching well.

George Lombard Jr. was pulled from the game after experiencing right-knee discomfort while at bat his 2nd time up, which caused consternation amongst Yankee fans — but afterwards manager Aaron Boone said he has received imaging and was fine — it was just a little tweek.

“A lot of contributions up and down,” said manager Aaron Boone about the Yankee offense. “A good night for us to salvage one of these two today, and an opportunity to have a really good series tomorrow in what was a long day at the ballpark today.”

“He’s a great hitter,” said Boone about Garcia Jr. “I think you’re seeing that. You’re seeing a guy 26 years old really come of age this year and he really hasn’t missed a beat since coming over to us. And we’re thrilled to have him, because he’s a dangerous, dangerous hitter.”

NY improves to 77-59, 4.5 games behind Tampa and 3 ahead of Boston, which is now 74-62, 7.5 games out.

1. Fried Good

Good news for the Yankees — Max Fried pitched well and looked good in his first start since spending a brief 15 days on the IL after a slight recurrence of the bone bruise in his left elbow that kept him out from May 13 to July 21.

Fried retired the first 6 batters of the game, pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st and 2nd — before Nick Sogard led off the 3rd with a 351-foot HR to right for a 1-0 Boston lead.

Fried then allowed a single to Connor Wong, and a 1-out single to Jahmai Jones before getting consecutive outs to end the inning.

The Yanks got Fried a 3-1 lead for the 4th, and Fried walked Willson Contreras to start the inning — but then struck out Caleb Durbin and Andruw Monasterio before leaving with 2 outs and 63 pitches, as he had hit his pitch count and Nick Sogard was due up again.

Yerry de los Santos came in and struck out Sogard to end the inning.

2. Yanks Take 3-1 Lead in 3rd

The Red Sox threw a bullpen game at the Yanks in this the 2nd game of a day-night doubleheader.

29-year-old, 6’1 lefty Alec Gamboa pitched a shutout 1st, and combined with Brayan Bello for a shutout 2nd.

But Bello got hit in the 3rd.

Jose Caballero led off with a single, Trent Grisham walked, and Ben Rice singled in a run for a 1-1 tie.

Luis Garcia Jr. then grounded into a fielder’s choice, scoring a run to make it 2-1 Yankees. And Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed with a sac fly to center for a 3-1 Yankee lead.

3. Blackburn Heroic in 6th

De los Santos got the first 2 outs of the 5th before allowing a single and handing the baton to Michael Fulmer, who got the final out.

But Fulmer allowed consecutive baserunners to start the 6th — hitting Wilyer Abreu and walking Willson Contreras — and handed the baton to Paul Blackburn in a 3-1 game.

Blackburn came in with 2 on and nobody out, and struck out Caleb Durbin, struck out Andruw Monasterio, and got Nick Sogard to fly to left to end the threat and the inning. Tremendous performance.

4. S Jones Big Insurance Sac Fly in 6th to Make It 4-1

Luis Garcia Jr. led off the 6th against Bello with a single, and moved to 2nd on a 1-out single by Amed Rosario. The two then did a double steal of 2nd and 3rd.

 

And with 1 out, Spencer Jones worked a 10-pitch at bat against Bellow — fouling off consecutive 3-2 pitches — before hitting a sac fly to left for a 4-1 Yankee lead.

 

5. Headrick Allows Run in 8th But Keeps It 4-2

Tim Hill pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th to keep the score 4-1 NY. He got help from Spencer Jones, who made a terrific running catch by the wall in left center for the 2nd out.

And then Brent Headrick came in for the 8th — and got the first out before allowing a double to Wilyer Abreu and RBI triple to Willson Contreras for a 4-2 game.

But with Contreras on 2nd, Headrick got tough — striking out Caleb Durbin and then getting Monasterio to hit a hot-shot grounder down 3rd, where Amed Rosario made a terrific play and throw to end the inning.

6. Yanks Blow It Open with 5 Runs in 8th

And then the Yankees blew the game open in the bottom of the 8th against reliever R Burgos.

Cody Bellinger led off with a single to right; next batter Luis Garcia Jr. singled to right moving Bellinger to 3rd. Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a fielder’s choice groundout to 2nd — Bellinger having to hold at 3rd.

But Amed Rosario RIPPED a shot off the right field wall to drive in Bellinger to make it 5-2. The ball was returned quickly and Rosario only got a single out of it.

Next batter Spencer Jones reached on an infield single to put runners on 1st and 2nd, and Austin Wells blooped a single down the left field line for 2 runs and a 7-2 game.

Jose Caballero singled to keep the inning going, and Ben Rice singled in 2 more runs for a 9-2 game.

7. Beck Closes

Rookie Brendan Beck pitched the 9th. Beck is a 27-year-old, 6’2 righty who pitched at Stanford and was picked by NY in the 2nd round of the 2021 draft. He is 9-2 2.75 at AAA Scranton this year.

He threw a 95-MPH four-seam fastball and sinker, and an 85-MPH slider — and pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 9th — line out, strike out, and fly out — for the old ballgame.
