Ryan Weathers Goes Down with Arm Injury. Toronto 4 NY 3

Jazz Chisholm Jr. breaks up no hitter in 7th with a single.

Ryan Weathers removed himself from the game with 1 out in the 4th inning because of discomfort in his forearm, and that cast a dark cloud over the Yankees in a 4-3 loss to the Blue Jays on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

The Yanks were getting no hit into the 7th by Dylan Cease — trailing 3-0 — before finally getting hits and a run off him in the 7th, scoring 2 more in the 8th on a Luis Garcia Jr. HR off reliever Tyler Rogers, and getting the tying run to 2nd with nobody out in the 9th (and the tying run to 3rd with 2 outs) — before finally losing.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. broke up the no hitter with a single in the 7th and hit a leadoff double in the 9th to put the tying run in scoring position.

But afterwards the questions were all about Weathers.

“His stuff looked great today; I thought he looked good,” said catcher Austin Wells afterwards. “I kind of saw him walk off, we were going take some more time so I went out there to check on him; he just said he didn’t feel right. That’s pretty much the extent of the conversation. He’s been incredible for us the whole year. Obviously hoping for good news. Hopefully he doesn’t miss any time. Sending up prayers for sure.”

NY stayed 3 back of Tampa which also lost, and is 3 ahead of Boston, which won. Toronto

1. Weathers Leaves in 4th Down 2-0

Ryan Weathers wasn’t having the best afternoon — but wasn’t bad and his stuff looked great according to catcher Austin Wells.

Weathers allowed singles in the 1st to Brett Bateman, Alejandro Kirk, and George Springer for a run — but struck out Kazuma Okamoto and got Ernie Clement to ground out to end the inning.

Weathers then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd, and after allowing consecutive leadoff singles in the 3rd got Kirk to hit into a double play and got Springer to ground out to end the inning.

He allowed a leadoff double to Okamoto in the 4th, then a bunt single to Ernie Clement before striking out Daz Cameron. Chris McAdoo singled in a run to make it a 2-0 game — and Weathers took himself out of the game with his arm not feeling right.

2. De Los Santos & Hanner Hold Fort

Yerry de los Santos relieved Weathers with runners on 1st and 2nd and 1 out, and got an out, walked a batter to load the bases with 2 outs —  then got Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to ground out to end the threat.

De los Santos allowed a walk and a single to start the 5th, but got 2 outs before allowing a 2-out RBI single to Nathan Lukes to make it a 3-0 game.

De los Santos then pitched a shutout 6th.

Bradley Hanner pitched a shutout 7th.

3. Cease with No Hitter into 7th

Cease was tough — throwing a no hitter into the 7th.

The Yankees did manage to work 4 walks off him to no avail.

Trent Grisham worked a walk in the 1st — but Cease got 3 straight outs afterwards.

Spencer Jones led off the 2nd with a walk — but Cease then retired 9 in a row, pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd and 4th.

George Lombard Jr. worked a walk to leadoff the 5th, and Austin Wells worked a walk a batter later — but Cease got Jose Caballero to line out into a double play, then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 6th.

Luis Garcia Jr. walked to lead off the 7th, but again Cease got the next two batters.

4. Wells Drives in Run in 7th Off Cease

Finally, with 2 outs in the 7th — Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled to right to break up the no hitter, and Austin Wills singled to drive in a run, making it a 3-1 game and chasing Cease.

Righty Spencer Miles came in and hit Jose Caballero with a pitch to load the bases with 2 outs in a 3-1 game — but Trent Grisham grounded out to 1st.

5. Garcia 2-Run HR in 8th Pulls NY within 4-3

Nathan Lukes hit a HR to right leading off the 8th against Hanner — and so just like that Toronto was up by 3 runs again, at 4-1.

But NY answered in the bottom of the 8th: righty Tyler Rogers hit Ben Rice with a pitch leading off the inning, and a batter later, Luis Garcia Jr. hit a HR to right making it a 4-3 game.

6. Yanks Get Tying Run to 3rd in 9th

Louis Varland was in for the 9th, with his 98-MPH heat and tough 89-MPH changeup.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. led off with a double to center — but Varland struck out Austin Wells and got Jose Caballero to ground out. Chisholm then stole 3rd, but Trent Grisham struck out for the old ballgame.
