Rodon Pitches Great But Yanks Get 3 Hits. Toronto 2 NY 0

Carlos Rodon pitched good but Yanks got shutout on 3 hits.

In his 3rd start of the season, Carlos Rodon finally looked good — pitching 5 innings of 3-hit, 1-run ball, and striking out 7.

But the Yankee lineup was shutout on only 3 hits by the Tampa bullpen in a 2-0 loss on a Thursday night in the Bronx.

Toronto “opened” with Braydon Fisher, brought in Adam Macko in the 2nd, used Spencer Miles for the 2nd through the 7th, brought in Tyler Rogers for the 8th, and closed with Jeff Hoffman.

The closest the Yanks had to a rally was runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out in the 6th. That was it.

“We got shut down tonite; didn’t muster much,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards.

NY falls to 30-21, 4.5 games behind Tampa in the AL East. Toronto improves to 23-27.

1. Rodon Pitches Good

Carlos Rodon walked Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with 1 out in the top of the 1st, then an RBI double to Daulton Varsho for a 1-0 Toronto lead.

And that was it — he got the next 2 outs of the inning, pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd (striking out 2), allowed but a 1-out walk in the 3rd, worked around a 1-out double to Ernie Clement in the 4th, and allowed a 2-out walk and single in the 5th but struck out Varsho to end the inning and his outing — down 1-0.

2. Miles the Key Pitcher for Toronto

Toronto “opened” with righty reliever Braydon Fisher — and he pitched a shutout 1st inning — striking out 4 batters around a 2-out walk to Cody Bellinger, then got the first out of the 2nd before being relieved by Lefty Adam Macko.

Macko got the last 2 outs of the 2nd, then got the first 2 outs of the 3rd before being relieved by righty Spencer Miles.

Miles took it from there through the 7th — pitching 4.1 shutout innings, allowing only 2 hits. He was the key to Toronto shutting NY out.

Spencer Jones got a leadoff single off Miles in the 5th in a 1-0 game — but Miles got flyout, strikeout, strikeout to end the inning.

The Yanks’ biggest rally of the day came in the bottom of the 6th with a leadoff single by Ben Rice and 1-out walk by Cody Bellinger. But Miles got a strikeout and groundout to end the inning.

Miles then pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 7th.

3. Headrick Good

Yoendrys Cruz got an out to start the 6th before yielding a double to Ernie Clement, and hitting Andres Gimenez with a pitch.

But Brent Headrick came in and got a fielder’s choice ground out and line out to end the inning — score remaining 1-0 Toronto.

4. Doval Allows Solo HR to Springer for 2-0 Game

Camilo Doval pitched the 7th — allowing a solo HR to George Springer for a 2-0 game.

5. Blackburn 2 Shutout Innings

Paul Blackburn pitched a shutout 8th and 9th for NY.

Trevor Rogers walked J.C. Escarra to lead off the bottom of the 8th, but got Ben Rice to lineout to center and Judge to ground into a double play. Jeff Hoffman pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 9th, striking out the last 2 Yankees — Chisholm and Paul Goldschmidt — swinging for the old ballgame.
