Post-2026 Yankee Season Analysis by Manager Aaron Boone

The Yankees have won the most games in the American League in the last 3 years — coming off consecutive seasons of 94, 94, and 93 wins — and the last game of 2026 was rained out so it could have been 3 straight 94 win seasons.

And the Yanks beat Boston in the best-of-5 Wild Card series the last 2 years — phew!

NY finished tied with Toronto with 94 wins in 2025, and could have had more wins than Tampa in 2026 had not Aaron Judge missed the last 4 months of the season, and Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, Gerrit Cole, and Ryan Weathers missed significant time with injuries.

Even with all of that the Yanks still gained 93 wins — by far the 2nd best record in the American League — due to the splendid seasons of Cam Schlittler, Ben Rice, and a tremendous bullpen led by David Bednar, Brent Headrick, and Paul Blackburn.

But at the end the Yanks lost 3 squeaky-close games to Tampa and they were gone. One game was lost due to Drew Rasmussen outdueling Cole 1-0, one game was lost due to errors — ruining a great Schlittler performance, and the last game was lost due to a Yankee fan interferring with a game-tying Anthony Volpe homerun.

And the baseball playoff rules killed the Yanks the last 2 years as well — as the Yankees had to play a best-of-5 series against a team from the AL East — wherein the Yankees couldn’t take advantage of their deeper (and amazing) starting staff that they could have in a 7-game series.

That’s Baseball Suzyn.

Post-Season Analysis by Boone

With all of that as the backdrop, Yankee Manager Aaron Boone sat with reporters on October 21, 2026, for a post-season analysis of the 2026 season. Here are his responses to reporter questions.

Why Can’t the Yankees Win a World Series?

A reporter asked Boone why the Yankees haven’t been able to win a World Series.

Aaron Boone answered:

“Every year’s a little bit different. There’s years where I feel like we’ve been, at times throughout the year, the best team or one of the very best teams in baseball. And you get to the finish line and you’re not that same team.

[This year], felt like we had a team capable of making a deep run and winning it all, but ultimately got beat.”

On Public Accountability

A reporter asked, “I’m curious what your philosophy is on that, public accountability and criticism of players, because you don’t do that very often, and you were a player, obviously, so you have a different perspective on it, but is it something you might consider doing more often going forward?”

Aaron Boone answered:

“No, I mean, there’s the occasions where there’s a spot that requires you to, you know, call somebody out. I would, I know I get accused sometimes of, you know, being too positive in the media, and I would just—I would say if you watch my post press conferences this year, there are a lot of days where I was talking about our struggles. And, but does that mean I’m calling individuals out in a public way?

There is probably a time and place for that, but generally speaking, to me, that’s not leadership. That’s me giving red meat to people that wanna be upset with somebody. You know, and to me, you know, when you—when we have issues, you know, as a club or with an individual player or with a, with something that popped up within a game, you know, I address those things. We address those things, you know, man to man, sometimes it, you know, if we have to address something within the group, we do that.

You know, I just, I don’t think it’s leadership coming up here and giving red meat to [people who] wanna hear us beat down a [player].”

Yankee Offensive Issues

A reporter asked about the Yankees’ offensive issues this year and what the organization can do to improve.

Aaron Boone replied:

“At different times this year, the run scoring was a problem for us and proved to be a problem in the Tampa series, too. The Red Sox series we played our best baseball at any time all year, but then got shut down, unfortunately, in three games by the Rays.

We have a number of coaches that are on expiring contracts. Some that are coming back. I think we have a great coaching staff. I think James leads a great hitting group. I’ve been really impressed with the culture that he’s created year in and year out over the last few seasons, so there’s a lot of reasons that go into why there’s underperformance in certain areas of the club, and you try and address those all as best you can and saddle back up and take your shot at it next year. So I know those are all conversations that have to happen within the organization.

Hitting’s been that moving target. As a sport, we see that. Like offenses are challenged now probably more than I’ve ever seen in my lifetime, and I think it has to do with just the advancements of pitching and how tech and analytics and all that have probably favored the pitcher more than hitters.

You’re always trying to incorporate the best of some teams. But you also start with a lot of certainties that you have within your club, so a lot of times you’re just trying to improve things around the margins, and hopefully we can do that this winter.”

Why Can’t Yanks Beat a Better Team in Playoffs

Reporter Joel Sherman said the Yankees have been able to beat teams in the playoffs with worse records than them in the regular season, but not beat teams with better records or similar records. Sherman asked Boone why people should believe Boone can be a .

Aaron Boone answered:

“We have to prove that otherwise. Hopefully we are that bully and we are the best team in the regular season next year and we bully our way through the post season. But until we don’t I don’t have that answer for you. We have to answer that.

Until the Brewers or the Rays win the World Series, they’ve never won a World Series.

I believe it can happen with me at the helm, but any answer I give in defense of that isn’t going to be a great one or satisfy people.

I think I’m good at my job. I think we have a lot of the right people in the building, but at the end of the day, we haven’t won a championship with me at the helm, and ultimately that’s what has to happen to satisfy, certainly, myself — like, that’s why I’m doing this — but to answer those questions.

If we don’t win a championship while I’m here, I’m sure that will be a frontline story of it all and how people think of me and how a fan base reacts. I understand that. I understood that when I took this job. I don’t define myself by how people look at me and judge me in my job. My job is to go be the best I can possibly be and try and get the most out of this club.”

A reporter asked Boone about managing the Yankees in 2027 on an expiring contract and his lame-duck status.

Aaron Boone answered:

“Doesn’t bother me at all. We’ll have players that are free-agents-to-be at the end of the season. We’ll have coaches potentially on expiring contracts, front office, all those things. That’s life. That’s part of it.

You know, I talk about perspective a lot. Like, you know, I feel blessed to be able to do this job alongside a lot of amazing people and I’m gonna go out there and do it to the best of my ability this year. And honestly, that potential thing hanging over, it’s fine. Like, my focus is only on looking towards next year and trying to help us become the best possible team we can be. And that’s where my focus lies and, you know, moving forward beyond that, that’s in God’s hands and I’m very comfortable and at peace with that and just looking forward to getting back to that point where we saddle up in spring and go take another shot at it.”

Title = Successful Manager

A reporter asked if Boone believe that in order to be a success as a manager of the Yankees, he needs to win a World Series.

Aaron Boone answered:

“Sure. … If we don’t win a championship while I’m here, I’m sure that will be a frontline story of it all and how people think of me and how a fan base reacts. I understand that. I understood that when I took this job. I don’t define myself by how people look at me and judge me in my job. My job is to go be the best I can possibly be and try and get the most out of this club.

I want to be the best I can be at my job. That’s where my focus lies.”
