Well at least Yankee fans who are also Knick fans didn’t miss anything.
Those watching the Knicks beat Philly to take a 3-0 game lead in their Eastern Conference series missed the Yanks get shutout on 3 hits in a 6-0 loss on a Friday night in Milwaukee.
NY was shut out on 2 hits for 6 innings by 23-year-old, 6’7 righty phenom Jacob Misiorowski and his 103-MPH fastball, and then were shutout by 27-year-old, 6’2 lefty Shane Drohan for the final 3 innings.
Max Fried got singled to death — allowing 4 runs on 2 walks and 4 singles in the 2nd inning, and a run in the 3rd on a double and a 2-out single. Fried settled down after that retiring 7 in a row in pitching a shutout 4th thru 6th inning.
Kervin Castro — who hadn’t pitched in the big leagues in 4 years after Tommy John surgery — made his debut for the Yankees and pitched the last 2 innings, allowing a run on a double and a 2-out single in the 7th.
The game also featured the MLB debut of Spencer Jones — who struck out once but walked once against Misiorowski, and struck out against Drohan — going 0-2 with a walk.
“Obviously was good and got a lead. Was able to get after it,” said manager Aaron Boone about Misiorowski afterwards. “It’s that lower slot that he has and gets the extension, almost more so than the velocity. There were a couple of times were we were getting some good at bats against him, and controlling the zone a little bit — but he had that big lead and got after it pretty good.”
On Fried, Boone said: “Stuff was good; even in the inning where they scored the 4, I don’t think they hit a ball hard.”
NY falls to 26-13 but remain in 1st by .5 game over Tampa which also (finally) lost (they were 13-1 coming in). Milwaukee improves to 20-16.
1. Misiorowski Sets Records with HOT Stuff
Jacob Misiorowski has a lot of knicknames already — for example, “HUMAN FLAMETHROWER”. The 22-year-old, 6’7 righty set all kinds of records in the Statcast era by throwing 10 pitches in the 1st inning, all 102 to 104 MPH, in striking out Trent Grisham and Ben Rice and getting Aaron Judge to fly to right.

Misiorowski threw almost entirely four-seam fastballs the first 2 innings, then worked in a very occasional 95-to-98-MPH slider and 87-MPH curve.
The Yanks were able to put the bat on the ball against Misiorowski — even though he struck out 11 in 6 innings.
- Cody Bellinger flied out and Jazz Chisholm Jr. grounded out in the 2nd, before Misiorowski struck out Spencer Jones in his MLB debut.
- Jose Caballero managed a single off him leading off the 3rd, and went to 2nd on a balk — but was stranded there as Misiorowski struck out Austin Wells and got a line out (by McMahon) and fly out (by Grisham) to end the inning.
- Misiorowski struck out Rice and Judge to start the 4th, then Bellinger hit into a groundout.
- The Yanks mounted another rally on him in the 5th on a 1-out walk by rookie Spencer Jones, and a single by Caballero. But Misiorowski struck out Austin Wells and Ryan McMahon to end the threat.
- And Trent Grisham walked to lead off the 6th. But Ben Rice flied out to center, and Misiorowski struck out Judge and Bellinger to end his outing. He wins to go 3-2 2.45.
2. Fried Foiled by Singles
Max Fried pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st, but got stung by singles and walks in the 2nd. He allowed a leadoff single to Gary Sanchez who fought a 2-strike pitch off for a slap single, walked Andrew Vaughn and Luis Rengifro to load the bases with nobody out, then allowed a seeing-eye RBI single to Lockridge and a single to Sal Frelick for a 2-0 Milwaukee lead.
Ortiz grounded out for a 3rd Milwaukee run, and Jackson Chourio singled in a run to make it 4-0.
Fried struck out Brice Turang and William Contreras to end the inning, leaving the runners on 1st and 2nd — but it was more trouble in the 3rd — a 1-out grounds-rule double by Vaughn and 2-out RBI single by leftfielder Brandon Lockridge made it 5-0 Milwaukee.
Fried finally found a groove — and retired 8 in a row — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th and 5th. He allowed a leadoff walk in the 6th but got a doubleplay, and finished with 6 IP, 6 hits, 5 runs, 5 K’s, and 3 walks. He loses to go 4-2 2.91.
3. Castro Returns to MLB
Kervin Castro came in for the 7th — allowing a leadoff double to Ortiz, and a 2-out single to Contreras or a 6-0 Philly lead.
He threw a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th (groundout, popout, strikeout).

4. Drohan Shut Yanks Out for Last 3 Innings
Shane Drohan, the 27-year-old, 6’2 lefty, came in for the last 3 innings, throwing a 95-MPH four-seam fastball, 94-MPH sinker, 92-MPH cutter, and an 81-MPH curve. He pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th (with 2 strikeouts) and 8th (fly out, groundout, groundout).
Aaron Judge got a 1-out single in the 9th, but Drohan got fly out and strikeout for the old ballgame.
