It’s been that kind of stretch for the Yankees — losers of 9 of their last 10 — when they don’t blow a game they were ‘this close’ to winning, they get shut down by another terrific starting pitcher.
This time it was another starting pitcher shutting them down — Joe Ryan specifically — leading to a 6-1 Twins win on a hot, humid, cloudy Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium — the day after July 4th.
Ryan was near unhittable — 7 innings of 3-hit, shutout ball, striking out 9 and walking 1. He wins to go 6-5 3.36 — meaning he hasn’t been this good in every start this year; just against the Yanks. In fact Ryan allowed 6 runs in 4 innings in his last start. He’s had a season of good and bad performances — this was a good one.
Ryan Weathers started for the Yanks, and allowed 4 runs in 4 innings. Camilo Doval came in for the 5th and buried the Yanks for the 2nd night in a row — this time allowing 2 runs to put NY in a 6-0 hole — although both runs were unearned due to an Anthony Volpe error.
The Yanks finally got a run in the 9th when Jasson Dominguez hit into a double play.
“We have a handful of guys, key guys that are scuffling,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “Forget obviously having some guys down right now, but we have guys capable of going out and doing really good things.”
NY falls to 49-40, and remain 4 games behind Tampa. Minnesota improves to 44-47.
1. Ryan Great
Joe Ryan has been either really good or really bad this season. Most of the time he is good, and has had some gems. On more than one occasion, he has been blasted. In his last start he allowed 6 runs in 4 innings; the start before that, 4 runs on 8 hits in 6 innings. But he’s also pitched some gems — like the start before that — 5 innings, 0 runs.
If his knuckle curve is curving — he is tough. His fastball tops out at 94 MPH, and he uses an effective 88-MPH splitter, 83-MPH sweeper, and nasty 84-MPH slider.

He was on his game in this one — 7 innings of 3-hit, shutout ball, striking out 9.
He allowed a 2-out single to Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the 2nd inning, a 1-out single to Austin Wells in the 3rd, and a 2-out single to Cody Bellinger in the 7th.

Ryan threw a 1-2-3 shutout inning in the 4th, 5th, and 6th — retiring 13 in a row.
2. Weathers OK, But Not as Good as Ryan
Ryan Weathers pitched OK — but not as good as Ryan.
Weathers got hit immediately — allowing a double to leftfielder Austin Martin to lead off the game, then a single to centerfielder Byron Buxton. He then got help from Austin Wells — who threw out Byron Buxton trying to steal while he struck out Kody Clemens) in a strike-em-out-throw-em-out double play. It was the first time Buxton was thrown out trying to steal 2nd since May 10, 2024! Buxton was 24-0 last year in Stolen Base attempts, and 7-0 so far this year.

But Weathers allowed a 2-out RBI single to DH Josh Bell for a 1-0 Twins lead.
Weather worked around 2 singled in the 2nd, and pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 3rd, before walking the leadoff batter of the 4th, and a 1-out single to 3rd baseman Brooks Lee for a 2-0 Minnesota lead.

Weathers hit rightfielder Luke Keaschall with a pitch leading off the 5th, and was relieved when he walked the next batter, Austin Martin.
Paul Blackburn came in and got 2 outs, but walked Josh Bell, and allowed a 2-out, 2-RBI single to 1st baseman Royce Lewis for a 4-0 game — both runs charged to Weathers.
3. Doval Buries Yanks Again
Camilo Doval came in for the 6th, and immediately allowed a leadoff double to Lee. Next batter Kreidler was safe on an error by Anthony Volpe.

Keaschall reached on a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out. Doval walked Austin Martin to make it 5-0, and then allowed a 1-out sac fly to Kody Clemens to make it 6-0.
4. Bird & Chivilli Good
Doug Bird pitched around a 1-out double to throw a shutout 8th.
A Chivilli pitched around a 1-out double to throw a shutout 9th.
5. Yanks Score in 9th on Martian Doubleplay
Andrew Morris — a 6’0 righthander born in Manhattan — threw a 1-2-3 shutout 8th, and so the Yanks went to the 9th down 6-0.
Finally the Yanks rallied — against former Yankee reliever Yoendrys Gomez.
Trent Grisham led off the inning with a double, and next batter Ben Rice singled him to 3rd.
Jasson Dominguez grounded into a double play, scoring Grisham to make it 6-1 — but Cody Bellinger flied out to center for the old ballgame.
