Cam Schlittler pitches 3-hit shutout into 8th with 12 K's and 0 walks for the win.

Cam Schlittler pitched a 3-hit shutout masterpiece into the 8th inning, striking out 12 and walking 0 to out-duel Jesus Luzardo and give the Yanks a 1-0 win on a beautiful, summer Friday night in Philadelphia.

The game came to its epoch in the bottom of the 8th, when Schlittler finally started to tire and allowed a 1-out single and hit-by-pitch. Brent Headrick came in and allowed a single to Edmundo Sosa to load the bases — but got Trea Turner to line out to Cody Bellinger in left and Kyle Schwarber to ground out to 2nd.

David Bednar pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th, helped by a terrific leaping catch by the wall in left by Bellinger for the 2nd out.

A PHEW ending to a phenomenal performance by Schlittler.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a HR in the top of the 4th for the only run in the game. It was the only mistake Jesus Luzardo made as he 3-hit the Yanks on the other hill.

Schlittler wins to go 10-6 2.07. Luzardo loses to go 9-5 3.31.

“I think being able to establish the curveball early, and then play the 4-seam and the cutter off that and sprinkle in the sinker in there when I needed to,” said Schlittler afterwards when asked what enabled him to get so much swing-and-miss. “I was able to get ahead and kind of stay ahead.”

“He’s electric,” added Schlittler about Headrick. “He’s saved me plenty of times this season.”

The 28-year-old, 6’6 lefty Headrick has been one of the best middle relievers in baseball this year. He came up through the Minnesota organization. NY picked him up when they waived him on Feb 11, 2025. Headrick pitched well for NY last year (0-0 3.13 in 23 IP) and has been even better this year (5-1 1.38 in 52 IP so far).

“I think Cam threw a hell of a game, and my job is to come in and keep it at zero,” said Brent Headrick afterwards. “That’s what you prep for. You love to be in those situations.”

NY improves to 58-45, and remain 2 behind Tampa and 4 ahead of Boston. Philly falls to 56-48.

1. Schlittler Throws a Masterpiece

Cam Schlittler was coming off a so-so start against the Dodgers where he allowed 3 runs on 6 hits in 4.1 innings. He made up for it — getting ahead, throwing his curveball for strikes early, and blitzing the tough Philly lineup with his easy-motion–delivery, 100-MPH heat.

Cam retired the first 10 batters he faced — striking out 2 in the 1st, 2 in the 2nd, and 2 in the 3rd — before allowing a 1-out double to Kyle Schwarber in the 4th. By that time he had a 1-0 lead, and a groundout and strikeout later he was into the 5th.

Schlittler allowed a 2-out single in the 5th but struck out the last batter to end the inning, then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 6th with 2 more strikeouts.

Cam struck out his 11th batter in a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th, and struck out the 1st batter of the 8th.

2. Luzardo Great Too in Pitchers’ Duel

Meanwhile, Jesus Luzardo — one of the top pitchers in the National League — was not so shabby on the other hill, using 97-MPH heat and a tough 83-MPH sweeper to shut down the Yanks.

3. Goldy HR Puts Yanks Up 1-0

Luzardo retired the first 9 Yankees in a row — 4 on strikeouts — when Paul Goldschmidt led off the top of the 4th by hitting a 94-MPH, 2-0 sinker 371 feet to opposite-field right for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

4. Headrick Hangs Tough in the 8th

The game hung in the balance — Yanks up 1-0 — with Schlittler pitching a shutout into the 8th, when — after striking out the 1st batter in the inning, J.T. Realmuto got his 2nd hit of the game (of the 3 Schlittler allowed) by singling into left. Schlittler then hit rightfielder Gabriel Rincones Jr. with the first pitch to him and it was 1st and 2nd with 1 out.

In came Brent Headrick, and first batter pinchhitter Edmundo Sosa ripped a single to right — but Jasson Dominguez charged the ball and threw a STRIKE home — and Realmuto had to stop at 3rd.

Headrick then got Trea Turner to hit a line drive to left — but Cody Bellinger was there to make the catch and throw a STRIKE home and again Realmuto had to hold at 3rd.

And then the National League Homerun Leader — Kyle Schwarber — stepped up with bases loaded — and Headrick got him to ground out to 2nd to end the inning. PHEW!

5. Bednar Gets 1-2-3 Save with Help from Bellinger

Jonathan Bowland and Jose Alvarado shut the Yanks out in the top of the 8th and 9th, respectively — so the game was to the bottom of the 9th with the Yankees hanging on to a 1-0 lead.

David Bednar came in and struck out Bryce Harper, then allowed a drive to left by Brandon Marsh that looked like it might tie the game. But Cody Bellinger made a tremendous catch at the wall on what would have been a double or triple — and instead it was 2 outs.

And finally Bednar got 3rd baseman Alec Bohm to ground out for the old ballgame.
