Brendon Beck Takes the Loss. Baltimore 10 NY 2

In his 2nd appearance and 1st start in the big leagues, rookie Brendon Beck got clipped for 7 runs in 5 innings to take the loss in a 10-2 Baltimore win in the 1st game of a doubleheader on a Windy Friday afternoon at Yankee Stadium — with a Northeasterner bearing down on the East coast.

There were good moments for Beck — like striking out the side in the 1st inning, and pitching a shutout 2nd and 5th inning. But he allowed a 2-out, 2-run HR to Pete Alonso in the 2nd inning, and a 2-out Grand Slam to Dylan Beavers in the 3rd — and that gave Baltimore the early 7-0 lead.

The Orioles started Trevor Rogers, one of their top starters. Surprisingly he was taken out after 4 innings and 55 pitches, leading 7-1, and didn’t get the win.

Pete Alonso hit a 2nd HR in the 7th inning, and now leads the American League with 43 HR’s.

“I was tripping out on that,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards when asked about the incredible red sunset late in the game due to the Northeasterner approaching. “That was crazy. There was a rainbow too off to the right. That was … yea .. make sure you have your affairs in order.”

NY drops to 92-68, the 2nd best record in the AL — 4.5 games behind Tampa. Boston also won to clinch the 2nd Wild Card spot — meaning they will play the Yankees in a best-of-3 series next week, with all games at Yankee Stadium.

1. Tough Day for Beck — But Some Good Things Too

Brendan Beck made his 2nd MLB appearance and 1st MLB start. His prior appearance was in May, when he came in for the 2nd inning in an “opener” game, and pitched 3 solid innings. At the time he was 2-2 5.11 at Scranton but was coming off a good start. He finished the year 10-2 2.93at Scranton.

Beck has pedigree — he was the Yanks’ 2nd-round pick of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Stanford where he went 9-3 3.15 as a senior in 2021. He’s had several arm surgeries since then, including Tommy John surgery, and is now 27 years old.

Beck uses an assortment of pitches — a 93-MPH fastball and sinker, an 83-MPH slider, an 83-MPH splitter, and a 76-MPH curve — and when he is ahead in the count, he is dangerous as hitters don’t know what’s coming. Beck struck out the side in the 1st inning — rightfielder Dylan Beavers, Pete Alonso  and Gunnar Henderson.

And Beck pitched a shutout 2nd — fly out, groundout, double by Colton Cowser, and strikeout.

Alonso 2-Run HR in 3rd Gives O’s 2-0 Lead

Beck got the first 2 outs of the 3rd and things were looking good. But he walked Dylan Beavers and Pete Alonso ripped a HR 407 feet to left for a 2-0 Baltimore lead.

Beavers’ Grand Slam in 4th Makes It 7-0 Baltimore

Beck struck out the last batter of the 3rd, but ran into trouble in the top of the 4th — walking DH Coby Mayo, allowing an infield single to 3rd baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand, and walking Colton Cowser to load the bases with nobody out.

Beck struck out 2nd baseman Jeremiah Jackson — but allowed an RBI single to leftfielder Christian Franklin and it was 3-0 Baltimore.

Beck then got a fielder’s choice groundout — Encarnacion-Strand out at home — and so there were 2 outs, bases loaded — and it looked like Beck might get out of the jam.

But Dylan Beavers ripped a 1-1 curveball 379 feet to right center for a Grand Slam and 7-0 Baltimore lead.

Beck stayed in the game, and got the last out of the 4th then pitched a 1-2-3 shutout inning in the 5th. So there was good amongst the 7 runs allowed.

2. Rogers Last Start for Orioles?

Trevor Rogers started for the Orioles and pitched well — shutting the Yanks out through the first 3 innings, then allowing a run in the 4th on a lead-off triple by Heliot Ramos and RBI single by Amed Rosario.

But he left the game after 4 innings and 55 pitches, leading 7-1. So he didn’t get the win — and finishes the season 10-11 4.03.

Rogers is going to be a free agent at the end of the year, and Orioles fans online expressed fear that it may have been his last start for the Birds. The tough lefty has had a mixed year — but overall a good one, and is expected to be one of the better starters available on the free agent market.

His season:

  • March 26-April 7: 1.89 ERA in 3 starts
  • April 14-May 29: 10.01 ERA in 7 starts
  • June 4-Sept. 25: 2.90 ERA in 20 starts

3. Wind-Aided Inside-the-Park HR for Jackson in 6th

Yerry de los Santos came in to pitch the 6th, and first batter Jeremiah Jackson ripped a fly to right and into the swirling Northeasterner wind — which Spencer Jones got a glove on but could not catch by the wall. The ball bounced off the wall and away from Jones, and Jackson legged it out for an inside-the-park HR. Baltimore 8 NY 1.

4. Alonso Hits 2nd HR in 7th

De los Santos retired the next 3 batters in the 6th, but Pete Alonso greeted him in the 7th with a 471-foot BOMB to left for a 9-1 Baltimore lead.

5. Suarez Shuts Down Yanks in Relief

Albert Suarez — a 36-year-old, 6’3 righty — came in for the 5th and shut the Yankees out for 4 innings of 3-hit ball, striking out 5 and walking 0.

Suarez came up with the San Francisco Giants, pitching in 2016 and 2017 for them — before spending 5 years in Japan. He returned to the Majors in 2024 and has spent the last 3 years with the Orioles.

6. Volpe Plays 3rd, Gets 2 Hits

Anthony Volpe played 3rd base in the game — and got no chances. But he went 2 for 4 at the plate and is at .245 (.322 OBP).

7. Hoppe Finishes

The Orioles brought in Alex Hoppe in the 9th to finish the game. Spencer Jones led off with a shot off the wall in right that went for a single (pictured at top of this article). Volpe struck out but Ali Sanchez was hit by a pitch and Jose Caballero walked to load the bases.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a sac fly to make it a 10-2 game, but Ben Rice struck out for the old ballgame.
