Austin Wells CLUTCH Hit Starts Parade of Hits in 10th! NY 6 LA Angels 3

Austin Wells CLUTCH single with 2 outs in 10th puts Yanks up 3-1.

Austin Wells came up with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the top of the 10th, fouled off consecutive 1-2 pitches, and lined a single “just” thru the hole between 1st and 2nd for 2 runs and a 3-1 Yankee lead!

Then Cody Bellinger singled to make it 4-1 NY; then Trent Grisham singled to make it 5-1 NY; then Ben Rice singled to make it 6-1 NY!

The parade of hits gave NY a 6-3 win — after Michael Fulmer allowed a 2-run HR in the bottom of the 10th before getting the final outs.

Cam Schlittler pitched another masterpiece — 8 innings of 2-hit ball, striking out 9 and walking 0 — but was left empty handed. He was locked in a pitchers’ duel with Reid Detmers, who pitched 7 innings of 6-hit, 1-run ball.

“I thought both pitchers were really good,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “Just a lot of really great at bats in the 10th inning highlighted by Wellsy. That guy’s tough on lefties, and Wellsy has a long at bat and eventually outlasts him. And to do all the damage we did there with 2 outs, was massive.”

NY takes 2 of 3 in the series and improves to 80-60, pulling to 3.5 behind Tampa and 5 games over Boston. The LA Angels drop to 53-87.

1. Schlittler Fantastic Again

Cam Schlittler was amazing again — from the start — throwing a 9-pitch 1st inning for 3 straight groundouts. He allowed a leadoff single in the 2nd, but then retired 17 in a row — throwing a shutout into the 7th inning, and leading 1-0.

But with 2 outs in the 7th, Vaughn Grissom hit a 95-MPH cutter for a 408-foot HR just over the centerfield wall for a 1-1 tie.

It was his only mistake of the night — he retired the next 4 batters in a row to finish with 8 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs, 9 K’s, 0 walks. He deserved to win but didn’t get the decision and is now 12-6 2.04.

2. Detmers Good Too

Reid Detmers was good too. The 27-year-old, 6’2 lefthander allowed 6 hits in 7 innings — 4 of them coming in the 4th, when the Yanks scored their 1 run off him — and it could have been more.

Paul Goldschmidt led off with a single to left and Cody Bellinger singled to right to start things off.

Heliot Ramos then hit a SHOT to shortstop — and Goldschmidt was doubled off 2nd for a doubleplay.

With 2 outs, Ben Rice reached on an infield single, and Amed Rosario hit double to right that bounced into the stands — Bellinger scoring but Rice being forced to hold at 3rd — he would have scored had the ball stayed in play. Andrew Jones then struck out and the Yanks only had 1 run for all that hitting.

After that Detmers settled down to retire 9 of 10 in pitching a shutout 5th thru 7th.

3. Bednar Pitches 9th

And then the Angels pen came in to shut NY down as well — 6’5 righthander Ryan Watson pitching a shutout 8th, allowing just a 2-out single to Austin Wells; and 6’5 righthander Ben Joyce pitching a 1-2-3 shutout 9th.

David Bednar relieved Schlittler and pitched a shutout bottom of 9th: strikeout, strikeout, single by Mike Trout, strikeout of Wade Meckler.

4. Wells Clutch Hit Starts Parade of Hits in 10th

6’5 righthander Luke Murphy pitched the top of the 10th for the Angels, with the inherited runner Amed Rosario on 2nd.

Murphy began the inning by striking out Spencer Jones with a 97-MPH four-seam fastball — it was the 4th time in 4 at bats Spencer struck out in the game.

But Jose Caballero singled to left — Rosario forced to hold at 3rd.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. then walked to load the bases with 1 out.

But Murphy got Luis Garcia Jr. to pop out to shortstop for the 2nd out and it looked like the Yanks would squander their chance for a run — and be looking at the Angels primed to win with their inherited runner on 2nd to start the bottom of the 10th.

It was up to Austin Wells, with 2 outs and bases loaded in a 1-1 tie.

Wells fell behind 1-2, the fouled off consecutive four-seam fastballs coming in at 97 and 95 MPH, before hitting a 96-MPH fastball just through the right side for a 2-RBI single and 3-1 Yankee lead!

Cody Bellinger then singled to left to make it 4-1!

Trent Grisham then singled to left to make it 5-1!

Ben Rice then singled to right to make it 6-1!

Finally, the Angels brought in 6’3 lefty Blake Weiman and he got Amed Rosario to fly out to deep left for the final out.

5. Fullmer Closes

Michael Fullmer pitched the bottom of the 10th for NY. He got the first out but then allowed a 2-run HR to Moises Ballesteros for a 6-3 game. “It’s not over yet,” said Dave Sims on the radio.

But Fullmer then got a groundout and strikeout for the old ballgame.
