At Least Ben Rice Hit a HR & Volpe Went 2-for-3. Philly 11 NY 4

Ben Rice hits HR #31 to make it an 11-4 game.

Will Warren got pummeled for 6 runs in 3 innings, and an Anthony Volpe error kicked off a 6-run 6th where the roof caved in on Ryan Yarbrough with 2 outs — burying any Yankee thoughts of a comeback in an 11-4 pasting on a Sunday night in Philadelphia.

At least Ben Rice hit a HR — #31 overall — and Volpe went 2-3 with 2 doubles and a walk, including an RBI double in the 5th that pulled the Yanks to within 6-3 at the time. Volpe is now batting .250 (.345 OBP).

“Struggling  controlling the zone and getting ahead,” said manager Aaron Boone about Warren’s outing. “Seemed like he was 1-0 to most guys; they got into leverage counts and made him pay a little bit. I thought his stuff was ok, but they were on the offensive because he was behind on the count some.”

NY took 2 of 3 in the 3-game set, but drops to 59-46, 3 games behind Tampa and 4.5 ahead of Boston. Philadelphia improves to 57-49, 5.5 games behind Atlanta in the NL East.

1. Warren Ripped

On June 1st, Will Warren had a 7-1 3.22 record. After this loss, he is 7-5 4.41.

He has had numerous ineffective starts and some good ones — in fact his last start he pitched 5 innings of 4-hit, 1-run ball against Washington.

But this was another rough start.

Warren allowed a triple to Trea Turner to lead off the bottom of the 1st — a sac fly by Kyle Schwarber made it 1-0 Phillies.

Warren got clipped for a solo HR by Stott in the 2nd and it was 2-0 Phillies.

And then things really unraveled in the 3rd — after Warren got the first 2 outs. Kyle Schwarber walked, Bryce Harper doubled to right, Brandon Marsh was intentionally walked to load the bases.

With still 2 outs — 3rd baseman Alec Bohm hit a line drive to center that Max Schuemann dove for — but missed — the ball getting past him and Trent Grisham to clear the bases and make it 5-0.

A single by 2nd baseman Bryson Stott made it 6-0 before Warren got the final out.

Warren allowed a leadoff single in the 4th and was yanked for Tim Hill.

Warren had a relief outing in the 9th last week with the return of Max Fried and appears to be out of the rotation — this was his last chance to win back the 5th starter role that will now go to Ryan Weathers.

2. Volpe & Yanks Pull Within 6-3 in 5th

The Yanks were up against Christopher Sanchez, the Ace of the Phillies who came in with a 12-4 2.65 record (and left with a 13-4 2.73 record).

The Yanks peppered the big 6’6 lefty with leadoff baserunners in each of the first 2 innings — a leadoff single by Paul Goldschmidt in the 1st and a leadoff walk by Anthony Volpe in the 2nd — but Sanchez got 3 straight outs to end the inning each time, then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd.

Anthony Volpe ripped a 1-out double off Sanchez in the 4th, sending Amed Rosario — who had gotten on due to an error — to 3rd base.

The Volpe double gave the Yanks a chance to get back in the game — down 6-0 — with 2nd and 3rd, 1 out. But Sanchez struck out lefty Trent Grisham, walked Max Schuemann to load the bases — but got Jose Caballero to ground out to end the threat.

The Yanks pressured Sanchez again in the very next inning — the top of the 5th with Ali Sanchez leading off with a single to left. Paul Goldschmidt walked to put runners on 1sty and 2nd.

Ben Rice hit a fielders’ choice to put runners on 1st and 3rd — and Christopher Sanchez tried to pick Rice off 1st — but airmailed the ball into right field, allowing Ali Sanchez to score for a 1-0 game.

A Jasson Dominguez RBI groundout made it 6-2 Philly, and then Anthony Volpe ripped his 2nd double of the game to make it 6-3.

3. Doval Electric

Tim Hill relieved Will Warren in the 4th with a runner on and immediately hit a batter to make it 1st and 2nd with nobody out. But Hill then got a doubleplay and an out to end the inning.

But Hill got in trouble in the 5th — by this time NY had cut the Phillie lead to 6-3. Hill walked Bryce Harper and allowed a single to Brandon Marsh and was pulled for Camillo Doval.

And Doval was Electric — striking out the next 3 batters.

4. Volpe Error Kicks Off 6-Run 6th; Roof Caves on Yarbrough

Volpe gave the Yanks hope — until he helped kick it away in the 6th by not making a play on a soft-hit grounder by pinch-hitter Bryan De La Cruz leading off the inning — throwing it past Ben Rice at 1st and allowing Cruz to move to 2nd. It was ruled a single, although it sure looked like an error — a better throw by Volpe would have made it an out.

Centerfielder Justin Crawford then bunted to 3rd to move the runner — and reached on a bunt single. An RBI single by Trea Turner made it a 7-3 game, and a walk to Kyle Schwarber loaded the bases with nobody out.

Yarbrough came back to strike out Bryce Harper and Brandon Marsh and was “this close” to getting out of the jam and keeping the Yanks in hailing distance — but he hit Bohm with a pitch to make it 8-3, and Stott cleared the bases with a double to right and it was 11-3.

5. Rice HR #31

Ben  Rice hit a solo HR leading off the 7th against Tim Mayza to make it 11-4.

Ben Rice also doubled with 1 out in the 9th, but Philly reliever Chase Shugart struck out Ryan McMahon and Jasson Dominguez for the old ballgame.
