Yanks Pelt Mariners 3rd Time Thru Lineup. NY 11 Seattle 5

Trent Grisham's 2nd Homer of the game -- just over the centerfield wall.

Seattle starter Emerson Hancock was doing ok — leading 2-1 in the 5th — until he faced the Yankees for the 3rd time thru their lineup. NY pelted him for 5 straight hits, including the 2nd homer of the game by Trent Grisham — en route to a 6-run inning, capped by a 3-run homer by Austin Wells.

It turned a 2-1 Seattle lead into a 7-2 Yankee lead.

NY added 3 more runs in the 9th — 2 on an Anthony Volpe HR — for the easy 11-5 victory. On a Monday night in Seattle.

Clarke Schmidt pitched 6 innings, allowing 3 hits and 3 runs — for the “quality start” and win.

It was a frustrating night for Seattle centerfielder Julio Rodriguez, as Grisham’s 1st HR, in the 3rd inning, bounced off his glove, hit off the top of the centerfield wall, and went over. And then Grisham’s 2nd HR — in the 5th — was in an identical spot but this time just over the centerfield wall. And the HR by Austin Wells later in the inning was 20 feet to the right — but again just over the wall.

The only mar to the game was Oswaldo Cabrera badly injuring his leg on a slide home in the 9th off an Aaron Judge sac fly. Oswaldo was sent to the hospital with a possible broken ankle.

“He called me over and asked ‘Did I score?'”, said Aaron Judge afterwards. “Kinda shows you the type of guy he is. He’s a leader amongst all of us. He’s one of my favorite teammates.”

NY improves to 24-17, in 1st in the AL East by 3 games over Boston. Seattle falls to 22-18, in 1st in the AL West by 1.5 games over the A’s.

1. Grisham HR #1 Bounces Off Glove & Centerfield Wall

Seattle centerfielder Julio Rodriguez hit a solo HR in the bottom of the 1st off Clarke Schmidt to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead.

But Yankee centerfielder Trent Grisham matched him in the top of the 3rd by hitting a ball 412 feet to center — where Rodriguez made a valiant jump to catch the ball only to have it hit off his glove and the top of the centerfield wall — and go over for a HR and 1-1 tie.

2. Yanks Get to Hancock 3rd Time Thru Order

Besides that, 24-year-old, 6’4 Mariner starter Emerson Hancock was doing ok — working around a bunch of walks (2 walks in the 2nd, and 2 walks in the 4th) to hold a 2-1 lead entering the 5th.

But the Yanks POUNCED the 3rd time through their order:

Grisham led off the 5th with a solo HR to an almost identical spot as his 1st HR — this time415 feet to dead center and just over the wall.

And then in successive order:

Aaron Judge singled to left,

Ben Rice doubled to right,

Paul Goldschmidt singled to left for a run and 3-2 NY lead,

Cody Bellinger singled to right for a 4-2 NY lead,

Anthony Volpe lined out to right, sending Goldschmidt to 3rd, and

Austin Wells hit a 409-foot HR to center — a few feet to the right of where Grisham hit his 2 HRs. Yankees 7 Mariners 2.

3. Schmidt 2nd Straight “Quality” Start

Clarke Schmidt threw down his 2nd straight start of 6 or more innings. He allowed the solo HR to Rodriguez in the 1st, and a solo HR to Jorge Polanco in the 3rd — but mowed down 11 in a row after that, pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th, 5th, and 6th.

Schmidt allowed a leadoff double to Randy Arozarena in the 7th — and was relieved by Mark Leiter Jr. — who allowed the runner to come around on a 2-out single later in the inning.

Schmidt’s line: 6 IP, 3 hits, 3 runs, 6 K’s, 2 walks — his record improves to 1-1 4.73.

4. Leiter OK; Hill Hit Again

Leiter got the final out of the 7th and was credited with 1 shutout inning, although he allowed the inherited runner from 2nd to score.

Tim Hill pitched the 8th and got a strikeout, walked a batter, got a groundout comebacker for out #2, but then allowed a 3-run HR to Cal Raleigh for an 8-5 game.

Devin Williams came in and allowed a single before getting a fly out for the final out of the 8th.

5. Volpe Insurance HR in 9th

But the Yankee offense came right back with 3 insurance runs in the top of the 9th — Cody Bellinger led off with a single off T Taylor, and Anthony Volpe hit a 411-foot homer to left center. NY 10 Seattle 5.

6. Oswaldo Injured on Judge Sac Fly

Oswaldo Cabrera followed Volpe’s HR with a single to center, Oswald Peraza was hit by a pitch, and Trent Grisham singled to left to load the bases. Aaron Judge hit a sac fly to center but Oswaldo Cabrera injured his leg sliding into home.

7. Hamilton Finishes

Ian Hamilton pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th — line out, strike out swinging, and strike out looking — for the old ballgame.
