The Yanks were getting no-hit in the 7th by Dylan Cease, but came back twice in a nail-bitter of a game to win 4-3 in 10 innings on a J.C Escarra walk-off Sacrifice fly.
At Yankee Stadium on a beautiful Wednesday night.
The game started as a good old-fashioned pitchers duel, between Max Fried and Cease. Cease had a no-hitter going with 1 out in the 7th, with a 1-0 lead — when Cody Bellinger broke it up with a solo HR to right, tying the game 1-1.
Fried had made one mistake — a solo HR by Jackson Merrill in the 4th.
San Diego got 2 runs off Ian Hamilton and Luke Weaver in the 8th — to take a 3-1 lead. But Trent Grisham hit a 2-run HR in the bottom of the 8th to tie it.
After Luke Weaver rebounded with a 1-2-3 shutout 9th, Devin Williams took the hill in the 10th — and struck out 3 batters amidst a walk and a hit-by-pitch — leaving the bases loaded by striking out Xander Bogaerts on a 3-2 ‘air bender’ changeup.
What a game — overshadowed by the Knicks coming from 20 down to beat Boston Again in Game 2 of their best-of-7 series going on at the same time. The Knick game ended while the Yanks were tied 1-1 in the 7th.
“JC can really hit,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards about the rookie Escarra. “We haven’t seen it yet at this level just because he hasn’t had that many reps yet. But he’s a really good hitter. He did a really good job there with 2 strikes. Just a really quality pro at bat right there.”
NY improves to 21-16 and takes 2 of 3 from the Padres. The Yanks remain in 1st place, 2.5 games ahead of the Red Sox. San Diego falls to 23-13.
1. Fried Fantastic Again
Max Fried was masterful again — with his wide assortment of pitches and variable speed four-seam fastball that goes 91 to 97 MPH.

His one mistake was an 80-MPH sweeper to Jackson Merrill in the 4th that Merrill hit 417 feet to right center for a 1-0 San Diego lead.
Other than that, Fried cruised.
His line: 7 IP, 5 Hits, 1 Run, 8 K’s, 0 walks in 100 pitches. His record now stands at 6-0 1.05.
2. Cease No-Hitter Into 7th
But Dylan Cease was just as good — using his 99-MPH fastball, 80-MPH knuckle curve and lots of 89-MPH sliders.

Cease threw a no hitter into the 7th, striking out 9 and walking 2.
3. Bellinger HR Breaks Up No-No
Until 1 out in the 7th, when Cease threw Bellinger a 98-MPH four-seam fastball on an 0-2 pitch, and Bellinger got it — sending it 373 feet to right for a tie game — 1-1.

4. SD Takes 3-1 Lead Off Hamilton & Weaver
Ian Hamilton pitched the top of the 8th and ran into immediate trouble, walking Fernando Tatis Jr to start the inning, then walking Manny Machado after getting a groundout.
With 2 on and 1 out, Luke Weaver came in and for the 2nd game in a row — gave up a hit — this time a single by Jackson Merrill to make it a 2-1 game. Next batter Xander Bogaerts hit a sac fly and the Padres had a 3-1 lead.
5. Grisham Ties It with 2-Run HR
But in the bottom of the 8th, Oswaldo Cabrera led off with a walk against reliever Jason Adam, and next batter Trent Grisham — pinch hitting for Jorbit Vivas — ripped a 387-foot homer to right for a tie game at 3-3.

6. Weaver Rebounds with Shutout 9th
Luke Weaver rebounded from the RBI single and sac fly he gave up in the 8th to get the last out of the inning then pitch a 1-2-3 9th — fly out, foul out, fly out.
7. Devin K’s 3 in 10th — “Air Bends” Out of Jam
Cody Bellinger singled with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th off ace reliever Robert Suarez, but the Yanks couldn’t move him — which sent the game to extras.
In came Devin Williams, with the inherited runner on 2nd. Williams struck out Fernando Tatis Jr, walked Luis Arraez, struck out Manny Machado, and hit Merrill with a pitch — loading the bases with 2 outs.
Devin went 1-2 on Xander Bogaerts, then threw 2 balls — missing badly with a fastball. On the 3-2 pitch, he struck out Bogaerts with an 84-MPH ‘air bender’ and exalted on the mound. PHEW!
Jam: escaped.
Devin Williams: fired up.

8. Escarra Sac Fly Walks It Off
Oswaldo Cabrera was the quiet hero again in the bottom of the 10th — bunting the inherited runner — Jasson Dominguez — over to 3rd.
And rookie J.C. Escarra — pinch hitting for Peraza — hit a sac fly to left off Jeremiah Estrada for the old ballgame.
