Yanks Can’t Score! LA Angels 1 NY 0 in 11 Innings

In a game where they blew several chances late to score and win the game, the Yankees were shutout for the 2nd game in a row — losing 1-0 in 11 innings to the LA Angels on a Monday night in the Bronx under a regular light drizzle.

That drizzle kept a number of seeming HR balls by the Yanks in the ballpark. NY looked like they would break through several times to score a run and win the game — only to lose — with a runner thrown out at the plate in the 11th, and bases left loaded.

Clarke Schmidt was brilliant for the Yanks — 7.2 innings of 4-hit shutout baseball. He was matched by Jose Soriano, who threw 7 innings of 6-hit shutout ball.

Fernando Cruz got a big strikeout to end the 8th, Devin Williams pitched a shutout 9th, and Jonathan Loaisiga was terrific in pitching a shutout 10th, stranding the inherited runner, but blinked in the 11th, allowing a 1-out, opposite-field double down the 3rd base line that scored the inherited runner for the only run of the game.

It was the Yankees’ 4th loss in a row, having just been swept by the Bosox in Boston where NY scored 4 runs in the 3 games — with 1 run Friday, 0 runs Saturday, and 3 runs Sunday.

“First of all Soriano was really good,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “That bowling ball sinker he’s got .. that said, I thought we had ok at bats against him. We didn’t walk off him, and he kept us in the ballpark. I thought enough guys up and down the lineup had some hard-hit balls and had some good contact; but when you’re not hitting the ball out of the ballpark and having a hard time scoring runs you have to take advantage of some situational things that come up. We had some leverage there late with the runner on 2nd but just couldn’t push it around.”

NY drops to 42-29, in 1st in the AL East by 2.5 games. LA improves to 34-37.

1. Schmidt Fantastic

Good news for the Yanks — Clarke Schmidt was fantastic again. The guy is a pitcher. A top pitcher.

He worked around 2 singles in the 1st inning, getting a strikeout to end the inning with runners on 1st and 3rd — then retired 16 in a row — pitching a a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd thru 5th — and getting the first 2 outs of the 6th before allowing a single.

Schmidt blew thru the 7th with a 1-2-3 inning, and got the first 2 outs of the 8th before Christian Moore shot a line drive to right that Aaron Judge made a diving attempt on — missing it — and it went for a triple. Had Judge not made the dive it would have been a single. It was Moore’s first big league hit.

With runner on 3rd and 2 outs, Fernando Cruz came in and struck out Neto to end the inning.

Schmidt’s line: 7.2 innings, 4 hits, 0 runs, 3 K’s, 0 walks — he is now 3-3 3.16.

2. Soriano Tough Too

Jose Soriano, the Angels’ 26-year-old, 6’3 righty, was tough too — throwing 7 shutout innings, although the Yanks worked him a bit but could not break through.

  • The Yanks got 2 singles in the 1st — by Ben Rice and Aaron Judge — but with runners on 2nd and 3rd and 2 outs, Giancarlo Stanton — playing his first game of the year — grounded out.

  • Jazz Chisholm Jr. led off the 2nd with a double, but Soriano got 3 straight outs — fly out, fly out, ground out.
  • In the 4th, Cody Bellinger lined out to 3rd, Giancarlo Stanton singled, but Chisholm hit into a double play.
  • In the 5th, with 2 outs DJ LeMahieu walked and Trent Grisham singled, but Ben Rice struck out.
  • In the 7th, Chisholm led off with a single, Anthony Volpe bunted him to 2nd, but he was stranded there.

3. Devin a Shutout 9th

More good news for NY: Devin Williams looked real good again — pitching a shutout 9th. He did allow a 1-out infield single to Mike Trout, and a 2-out single to Jorge Soler, but got a strikeout in between, and an easy groundout to end the inning.

4. Giancarlo Leadoff Double in 9th — Serendipity Out at 3rd

Giancarlo Stanton led off the bottom of the 9th with a line-shot double to left off Kenley Jansen and the Yanks were cooking — in the rain.

Jasson Dominguez came in to run for Stanton.

But Jazz Chisholm Jr. could not advance the runner to 3rd — striking out on 3 pitches.

Then Anthony Volpe hit a shot to 3rd — fielded by Luis Rengifo just as The Martian was sliding head-first into 3rd. Rengifo made the tag as Dominguez’s head with batting helmet banged into his leg, sending Rengifo down for a bit.

When play was resumed — Volpe stole 2nd base — but was stranded there as Kenley Jansen struck out Austin Wells.

5. Loaisiga Terrific in 10th

More good news for the Yanks: Jonathan Loaisiga looked great again — stranding the inherited runner in the 10th with 2 strikeouts and a fly out.

6. Grisham; Goldy Shots Knocked Down by Drizzle

But the Yanks couldn’t score their inherited runner in the bottom of the 10th. Leadoff batter DJ LeMahieu fouled off an initial bunt attempt and then struck out against Ryan Zeferjahn.

Trent Grisham hit a shot to center but the rain held it up and it was caught by the warning track, moving Oswald Peraza the pinch runner, to 3rd. Paul Goldschmidt then hit a shot to center but it too was held up by the rain, and caught near the warning track.

7. Loaisiga Bit by Serendipity in 11th

Loaisiga came back out for the 11th and got a pop out to start the inning — keeping the inherited runner at 2nd.

But then Nolan Schanuel laced a double down the 3rd base line for a run — and it was 1-0 Angels.

The Yanks intentionally walked Mike Trout to put runners on 1st and 2nd, and then Loaisiga unintentionally walked Ward to load the bases with 1 out.

But Loaisiga got tough — getting Soler to line out to 3rd, and Travis d’Arnaud to line out back to Loaisiga for the 3rd out — keeping the game at 1-0.

8. Bellinger HR in 11th Knocked Down by Rain

With the score 0-0, and the Yanks with Paul Goldschmidt as the inherited runner on 2nd to begin the bottom of the 10th — the Angels’ manager Ron Washington intentionally walked Aaron Judge for the 2nd time in the game — putting runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out.

Cody Bellinger then hit what appeared off the bat to be a game-winning, 3-run HR to right — but the rain held it up — and it was a fly out to the warning track. Goldy went to 3rd.

Pitcher Brock Burke got 2 strikes on Jasson Dominguez with 97-MPH fastballs — but on a 1-2 pitch Dominguez put the ball in play — a slow roller toward 2nd. It looked like the Yanks tie the game.

But 2nd baseman Christian Moore made a great play on the ball — coming in and throwing a strike home to nail Goldschmidt.

With 2 outs — Jazz Chisholm Jr. reached on an infield single to load the bases.

But Anthony Volpe grounded out to 3rd for the old ballgame.
