The Martian Walks It Off with MOONSHOT! NY 4 Texas 3

The Martian walks it off with Moonshot to right.

Jasson Dominguez aka “The Martian” hit a MOONSHOT into the 2nd deck in right to break a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 9th and walk off a Yankee 4-3 win over Texas on a cold, wet, Rainy night at Yankee Stadium.

The Yanks were down 3-1 in the 7th when Cody Bellinger hit a solo HR off Jacob deGrom to make it 3-2, and then Aaron Judge ripped a CLUTCH, 2-out RBI single in the bottom of the 8th off reliever Luke Jackson to tie the score 3-3.

Ryan Yarbrough provided another terrific start for NY — 5 innings of 3-hit, 1-run ball, with 8 K’s and 0 walks. He matched deGrom through 5, but Tim Hill and Ian Hamilton both allowed solo HR’s in the top of the 7th to put Texas ahead 3-1.

Aaron Judge went 1-3 with a walk and is at .402 with a .492 OBP.

But the talk after the game was about The Martian, who reminds you so much of Juan Soto in his approach at the plate.

“I was just looking for something up,” said Dominguez afterwards. “His first 2 pitches were down and I saw that one was up. As soon as I hit it I knew it was my first walk off, and I enjoyed it.”

NY improves to 29-19, in 1st in the AL East by 5 games. Texas falls to 25-25.

After the game ended, the Knicks lost their game 1 matchup against Indiana when Indiana’s Aaron Nesmith hit five 3’s in the final 2 minutes, negating a 14-pt NY lead. The Knicks lost in overtime which ruined the night for most NY’ers, overshadowing the Yankee win.

1. Yarbrough Great Again

What a pickup Ryan Yarbrough has been. Pressed in as a starter due to injuries to the Yankee rotation, he threw down his 4th straight terrific start, and has now pushed Carlos Carrasco out of the rotation.

Yarbrough used his assortment of off-speed pitches to keep the Rangers off balance — his 81-MPH cutter, 68-MPH sweeper, and 78-MPH changeup make his 86-MPH sinker and 89-MPH four-seam fastball look fast.

Yarbrough was in command — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st, allowing just a 2-out single in the 2nd and a 1-out single in the 3rd, throwing a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th, and then getting clipped for a 1-out solo HR to Jake Burger in the 5th, tying the game 1-1.

Yarbrough got the next 2 batters for the very efficient 5-inning start — dueling Jacob deGrom to a draw.

2. Volpe Triple & LeMahieu Grounder Give NY 1-0 Lead

Jacob deGrom is back in form — entering the game with a 4-1 2.29 slash line.

Anthony Volpe got to him in the bottom of the 2nd with a triple to lead off the inning. Austin Wells struck out, but DJ LeMahieu hit a grounder to 2nd, scoring Volpe — as LeMahieu clapped his hands crossing the 1st base bag, having done his job against the tough deGrom.

3. deGrom Tough

After the DJ grounder, deGrom retired the next 13 batters in a row — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd through 6th. So that was 15 straight outs.

4. Hill & Hamilton Cough Up Solo HR’s in 7th

Jonathan Loaisiga pitched the 6th — getting 2 outs but then allowing a single, walk, and hit by pitch to load the bases.

Tim Hill came in and got a comebacker to end the inning.

But Hill got clipped in the 7th for a leadoff solo HR by Jake Burger, his 2nd HR of the game. Texas 2 NY 1.

Hill got the next 2 outs, and was relieved by Ian Hamilton to face the lefty Sam Haggerty. But Haggerty tagged Hamilton for a 390-foot HR to right. Texas 3 NY 1.

5. Bellinger Solo HR Off deGrom in 7th

It wasn’t looking good for NY — down 3-1 going into the bottom of the 7th with deGrom having retired 15 in a row. Until Cody Bellinger got him with a 383-foot homer to right center. Texas 3 NY 2.

6. de Los Santos Rope-a-Dopes 8th

Yank reliever Yerry de Los Santos rope-a-doped the top of the 8th in a 3-2 game — ground out, single, strike out, single, walk to load the bases with 2 outs — and then a groundout by Josh Smith to 2nd to end the inning. PHEW.

7. Judge CLUTCH RBI Single Ties It in 8th

deGrom left after 7 innings, and Robert Garcia came in to pitch the 8th. Garcia struck out LeMahieu but Paul Goldschmidt and Trent Grisham worked walks to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Ben Rice flied out and Texas brought in their Ace Reliever Luke Jackson and Aaron Judge ripped a CLUTCH RBI single to left for a tie game 3-3.

8. Weaver a Shutout 9th

de Los Santos allowed a leadoff single to Sam Haggerty in the 9th, and was yanked for Luke Weaver, who got a line out and fly out, and then picked Haggerty off trying to steal 2nd.

9. The Martian Walks It Off

Luke Jackson — who had given up the game-tying single to Judge in the 8th, stayed in for the bottom of the 9th in a 3-3 game. He got Bellinger to groundout for the 1st out, but Jasson Dominguez hit a 2-0 slider 398 feet to right for the old ballgame.
