“That’s a Big 10-4, Good Buddy.” NY 10 Pittsburgh 4

Trent Grisham with the 1st of his 2 homers on the day in Pittsburgh.

According to AI, “10-4 good buddy” is “a phrase used in CB radio and trucker culture meaning ‘message received’ or ‘understood’, often used as a friendly acknowledgement.”

If you lived in the 1970’s, or saw the movie “Smokey and the Bandit” with Burt Reynolds, you don’t need AI to know that.

Yankee fans and MLB observers in general are getting the message from this Yankee lineup — which is longer than last year and scoring lots of runs every day.

This time, the Pirates scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th off Marcus Stroman to take a 4-2 lead, so the Yanks scored 6 in the top of the 5th to regain the lead at 8-4, and added insurance runs in the 8th and 9th to win 10-4, on a cold Saturday late afternoon in Pittsburgh, gametime start 4pm.

Trent Grisham hit a 3-run HR in the 5th, followed by an Anthony Volpe bases-clearing double. The Yanks banged out 14 hits on the afternoon, with everyone in the lineup getting at least one. Grisham also hit a HR in the 3rd for 2 HR’s on the day; Volpe also got 2 hits on the day, as did Oswaldo Peraza; Paul Goldschmidt went 3-4 with a walk as the leadoff batter.

And the Yankee pen of Tim Hill, Mark Leiter Jr. Fernando Cruz, and Ryan Yarbrough threw 5 shutout innings.

“This offense has been incredible, you know,” said Marcus Stroman afterwards. “Even since the time I’ve been here it’s amazing to watch each and every day; you truly feel like your never out of a game.”

NY improves to 6-2; Pittsburgh falls to 2-7.

1. Chisholm-Wells Connect for 1st Run

The Pirates started 27-year-old, 6’4 lefty Bailey Falter and he threw a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st before hitting Jazz Chisholm Jr. with a pitch to start the 2nd. Falter struck out Anthony Volpe but Jazz stole 2nd, and then scored on an Austin Wells single to right. Yankees 1 Pirates 0.

2. Grisham HR Makes It 2-0 Yanks

Trent Grisham made it 2-0 NY with a 389-foot homer to right center leading off the 3rd. Grisham was starting in center as Cody Bellinger had the day off with a bad back.

3. Stroman Coughs Up Lead

Meanwhile Marcus Stroman was rolling — getting 2 groundouts to start the game before allowing a double, but then retiring 7 in a row, pitching a shutout first 3 innings.

But in the 4th, he walked the first 2 batters, and 3rd baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes — the son of former Yankee 3rd baseman Charlie Hayes — doubled in a run. Stroman then walked another batter to load the bases with nobody out. He struck out leftfielder Alexander Canario for the first out — but Enmanuel Valdez doubled to right scoring 2 and making it 3-2 Pittsburgh.

1st baseman Endy Rodriguez grounded out to score another run and make it 4-2 Pirates, before Stroman induced another groundout to finally end the inning.

“I felt pretty good overall; I just got into some deep counts in that 4th and walked a few guys; that was really it. And they swung at 2 first pitches — that was really it. That was the damage. I felt pretty good overall. Just can’t put free guys on base.”

4. Falter Falters in Yank 6-run 5th

The Yanks spotted those 4 runs and came right back with 6.

Jasson Dominguez led off the top of the 5th with a double, Oswald Peraza singled him to 3rd, and Trent Grisham parked one 366 feet to left for a 5-4 Yankee lead.

Paul Goldschmidt walked and Ben Rice singled — sending Falter to the showers.

Colin Holderman came in and immediately hit Aaron Judge with a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. He struck out Chisholm Jr., but Anthony Volpe ripped a bases-clearing double to center and it was 8-4 NY.

5. Yank Pen Throws 5 Shutout Innings

Stroman at 74 pitches was relieved by Tim Hill to start the 5th. Hill walked the first batter he faced but then got a double play and ground out and began 5 shutout innings by the Yankee pen:

  • Hill pitched a shutout 5th,

  • Mark Leiter Jr. pitched a no-hit, shutout 6th,
  • Fernando Cruz pitched a no-hit, shutout 7th, striking out 2, and
  • Ryan Yarbrough — who had been creamed in his first appearance as a Yank the other day — pitched 2 no-hit shutout innings, the 8th and 9th.

6. Goldy Drives in Insurance

The Yanks made it 9-4 in the top of the 8th when Oswald Peraza laced a 1-out double to left, Grisham — who had hit 2 homers on the day — bunted him to 3rd, and Paul Goldschmidt got a 2-out RBI single to left.

7. Judge, Volpe, Wells Combo Gets Final Run

The Judge-Volpe-Wells combo got the Yanks another run in the top of the 9th — Aaron Judge with a leadoff single to right, Anthony Volpe with a 1-out double to right, and Austin Wells with a sac fly to left for a big 10-4 to you buddy and the old ballgame.
