Marcus Stroman was blasted for 5 runs in the 1st inning, and left before getting the 3rd out with a left (landing) knee that was bothering him, on a Cold, Rainy Friday night at Yankee Stadium.
The game was called in the top of the 6th with the Giants leading 9-1 and with bases loaded and 2 outs — as the rain just would not stop. It had been raining steadily all day, since 2pm — so it was a surprise the Yankees were able to start the game during a brief period of light rain, and temps in the 40’s.
Stroman was to have X Rays taken after the game on his left knee, which is his landing knee.
“Part of the thing is that when he came out he said his left knee was bugging him,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “We got some Xrays here and I think he went to the hospital to get more testing, so we’ll see what we have tomorrow.”
NY falls to 7-6. San Francisco improves to 10-3.
1. Stroman Crushed in 1st
Watching the game at home on TV, you felt bad for the people who had the unfortunate luck to buy tickets to this game. It was Cold and Wet out — temps in the mid 40’s and raining all day, since 2pm. Good to be indoors.

And yet the Yankees took the tarp off the field at 7pm and the game started at 7:30pm, a half hour late.
And Marcus Stroman got drenched — a leadoff double by rightfielder Mike Yastrzemski on the first pitch of the game, then a walk to shortstop Willy Adames, and homer to right center by centerfielder Jung Hoo Lee and it was 3-0 San Fran.
Stroman then walked 3rd baseman Matt Chapman and leftfielder Heliot Ramos, and coughed up a 2-RBI double to 1st baseman LaMonte Wade Jr. and it was 5-0 Giants with nobody out.
Stroman finally got an out — striking out DH Wilmer Flores, and then getting catcher Patrick Bailey to fly out to left, but he allowed a single to 2nd baseman Tyler Fitzgerald, and Aaron Boone yanked him.
Boone said afterwards Stroman said his left knee was bothering him, so that was part of why Boone pulled him.
2. Wells Misses HR by “This Much” in 2nd
San Francisco starter Robbie Ray (who edged Gerrit Cole for a Cy Young in 2021 with a 13-7 2.84 vs Cole’s ) had no trouble with the rain and Soggy conditions in the bottom of the 1st — striking out the side around a walk to Aaron Judge.
But in the 2nd the 33-year-old lefty walked Anthony Volpe, and Austin Wells ripped what looked like a 2-run Homer to right but it bounced off the top of the wall and stayed in play for an RBI double.

3. Ray Gets the Win
Ray then walked Oswald Peraza before getting 2 fly outs to end the inning.
Ray walked Judge again in the 3rd, and allowed a 2-out infield single to Anthony Volpe — putting Yanks on 1st and 2nd and down 5-1.
But Ray got Jazz Chisholm Jr. to fly out and then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th.
Ray’s night was done at 98 pitches — and because the game was ended in the 6th, the official scorer gave him the win. He is now 3-0 2.93 on the year.
After winning the Cy Young in 2021 with Toronto, Ray:
- Signed a 5-year contract paying $21-$25M a year with Seattle, but after having a 12-12 3.71 year in 2022, was shelved in 2023 with Tommy John surgery and
- Was traded to the Giants in January 2024 for veteran starter Anthony DeSclafani, Mitch Haniger and cash.
- Ray was 3-2 4.70 for the Giants in 2024 in his comeback from Tommy John.
4. Yarbrough Good
Ryan Yarbrough relieved Stroman in the 1st and got the final out, and then pitched a shutout 2nd (walking 1) and a 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd.
He allowed a leadoff single in the 4th, then got a flyout and was relieved by Ian Hamilton, who was helped by the Yankee defense — who turned a slick double play behind him — 3rd (Peraza) to 1st (Goldschmidt) to 3rd (Peraza) to end the inning.

5. Hamilton & Hill Have Trouble in Rain in the 5th
But Hamilton had trouble in the rain and the cold in the 5th — walking the first 2 batters, before getting a strikeout.
Tim Hill came in and walked a batter, then got a groundout that scored a run — charged to Hamilton. Hill then threw a wild pitch that scored another run, and then allowed a double to Bailey and it was 8-1 San Fran.
6. Gomez Wild in the Cold Rain in the 6th
Yoendrys Gomez took the mound in the top of the 6th as the rain continued to come down — and he walked the first 3 batters — Yastrzemski, Adames, and Jung Hoo Lee — to load the bases with nobody out.
Gomez then struck out Matt Chapman and Heliot Ramos — but walked Wade Jr. to make it 9-1 and the umps finally came out and called for the tarpaulin.
The game was called a half hour later.
