Pitching, Defense, & Pablo Reyes. NY 1 KC 0

Pablo Reyes scores!

Will Warren and the Yankee bullpen threw a shutout backed by some tremendous defensive plays, and Pablo Reyes scored on a wacky play in the top of the 8th for the only run of the game in a 1-0 NY win over the Royals on a Thursday night in Kansas City.

Reyes scored from 2nd with 2 outs in the top of the 8th when Paul Goldschmidt lined one off the glove of the 1st baseman Vinnie Pasquantino for an infield hit, and Reyes attempted to round 3rd and score — changed his mind and stopped — then changed his mind again and came home, sliding in safe as the throw home was dropped.

Reyes made one of the tremendous plays in the field — a scoop-throw-with-glove play in the bottom of the 7th, just after Anthony Volpe made a Derek Jeter-esq jump throw at shortstop.

The Yanks were also helped by the weather — a rain delay in the top of the 6th that knocked Seth Lugo from the game at 73 pitches; he didn’t return after the rain stopped.

“I was ready to run; I was ready to score because there were 2 outs,” said Pablo Reyes afterwards to an MLB reporter acting as translator. “As I was rounding 3rd base I heard Luis say ‘oh no the pitcher has the ball’. There was a little confusion for a moment, then I decided to go.”

NY sweeps the 3-game series with the Royals and are now 42-25, in 1st in the AL East by 4.5 games over Toronto. KC falls to 34-35.

1. Warren Tremendous

The wipeout against the Dodgers is becoming a distant memory as Will Warren threw his second excellent start after getting shellacked by them a week and a half ago. He pitched a great game against Boston and their tough lineup in his last start, leaving with an 8-2 lead in the 6th with some runners on who all scored s0 his ERA actually went up.

Not so in this one — he threw down 5.2 innings of 4-hit shutout ball, lowering his ERA to 4.86 — although he didn’t get a decision, unlike the Boston game where he got the win.

He was up against Seth Lugo in this game — and he matched him zero for zero in a pitchers’ duel.

  • Warren pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st, then got in and out of trouble in the 2nd — after allowing leadoff singles to Vinnie Pasquantino and Salvador Perez, he got a double play, walked a batter, then struck out Freddy Fermin.
  • Warren then threw down a 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd and 4th. Warren was helped by a terrific play by Oswaldo Peraza for the 1st out of the 3rd — coming in on a bunt-single attempt by Kyle Isbel and just getting him at 1st.

  • Warren got out of another minor jam in the 5th — a 1-out triple by Nick Loftin. But Warren got Fermin to ground out directly to shortstop, holding Loftin at 3rd, and then another groundout to end the inning.
  • Unlike Lugo, who left after the rain delay in the top of the 6th, Warren came back out to pitch the bottom of the 6th. He allowed a leadoff single to Jonathan India — but got Bobby Witt Jr. to pop out and Maikel Garcia to foul out and left at 77 pitched.

Tim Hill came in with 2 outs and got the lefty Vinnie Pasquantino to end the inning.

Warren’s line: 5.2 IP, 4 hits, 0 runs, 4 K’s, 1 walk.

2. Lugo Tremendous

Meanwhile Seth Lugo was tremendous too.

He retired the Yanks in order in the 1st, 2nd, and 5th innings. He worked around a single and a walk in the 3rd, and got a double play in the 4th to eliminate a leadoff walk by Goldschmidt.

Lugo allowed a 1-out single and 2-out walk in the 6th — and then the rains came.

When play was resumed, Angel Zerpa relieved Lugo, and got the final out of the inning.

Lugo’s line: 5.2 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs, 2 K’s, 3 walks.

3. Volpe & Reyes DEFENSE in 7th

Tim Hill came back out to pitch the 7th, and got some help from his friends — Anthony Volpe with a Derek Jeter jump-throw from the hole at short for the 1st out of the inning, then Pablo Reyes coming in on a slow roller to 2nd and making a field-throw with his glove to nab the runner.

4. Leiter Again

But Hill walked Nick Loftin and the Yanks brought in Mark Leiter Jr. again; he and Hill seem to pitch in every Yankee game.

Leiter — who got ripped the game before — allowed a single to Freddy Fermin, before getting Isbel to fly out to right. Phew.

5. Reyes Scores!

Lucas Erceg, a 30-year-old, 6’2 righty, came out to pitch the top of the 8th in the 0-0 game — and Pablo Reyes — who had just made one of the defensive gems in the bottom of the 7th — greeted him with a single to right.

Aaron Judge — who had the night off; Bellinger was playing right — pinch hit for Peraza and struck out. Trent Grisham grounded out and with 2 outs — it looked like the 0-0 score would continue.

But Ben Rice worked a walk — moving Pablo Reyes to 2nd.

And Paul Goldschmidt hit a liner off the glove of 1st baseman Vinnie Pasquantino, beating it out for a single — as Reyes came around 3rd — stopped — and started again — barely scoring as the throw home was dropped. Yankees 1 KC 0.

6. Loaisiga a Shutout 8th

Jonathan Loaisiga pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th — 3 straight groundouts. He is the Yanks new #1 setup man until Luke Weaver returns from the hamstring injury.

7. Devin the Save

And Devin Williams pitched a non-agita, 1-2-3 inning in the 9th — fly out, ground out, and strike out looking for the old ballgame.
