Max Fried Dominant; Chisholm Gets Revenge. NY 7 Cincinnati 1

Jazz Chisholm Jr. with 2-run homer in 3rd -- revenge against Jose Trevino who got him tossed the night before.

Max Fried threw down another dominant performance — 7 innings of 4-hit baseball allowing only 1 unearned run — Jazz Chisholm got revenge, and the rest of the Yankee offense did their job in an easy 7-1 win in Cincinnati on a Wednesday night.

Chisholm hit a 2-run Homer in the 3rd to give NY an early 3-0 lead — getting revenge against old friend and Cincinnati catcher Jose Trevino — who instigated umpire Mark Wegner into ejecting Jazz from the game in the 9th inning the night before, a video revealed before the game. After a disputed strikeout in the 9th Jazz took the field at 3rd base, muttering to himself about a missed call, and the video revealed Trevino pointing to Jazz and telling the ump ‘Hey, look at Jazz. I think Jazz is trying to tell you something’. Jazz unknowingly turned around and asked the ump “Why are you looking at me?” and got tossed.

Unlike the night before when NY went up 3-0, the Yanks kept adding to their early lead. Jasson Dominguez and Trent Grisham both had 4-hit nights; Dominguez stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs to boot.

Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Volpe, Austin Wells, Grisham, and Chisholm all had RBI’s in the Yankee 13-hit attack.

But it was Jazz’s homer that was the key offensive turning point — and as he touched home, he could be seen telling catcher Trevino “Got you back.”

“After what happened last night, it felt great to get a hold of one,” said Chisholm after the game. “I watched the video, and he was telling the umpire, ‘Hey, look at Jazz. I think Jazz is trying to tell you something.’ But I wasn’t. That’s just his game; we know Trevi. I thought it was pretty funny. That’s why I said it.”

NY improves to 46-34, in 1st by 1 game over Tampa in the AL East, 3.5 over Toronto, and 7 over Boston which has lost 5 in a row. Cincinnati drops to 42-39, 5.5 behind Chicago in the NL Central.

1. Singer Striking Everyone Out — But Yanks Get a Run

Brady Singer started for the Reds — and the 28-year-old, 6’5 righty was striking out everyone early — everyone who wasn’t getting a hit.

Singer game in with a 7-5 4.13 record, with 67 strikeouts in 80.2 innings — not an especially high strikeout-to-inning ratio but he looked like Roger Clemens as he was K’ing everyone with his sinker-slider mix.

He allowed a leadoff double to Trent Grisham to start the game, and a 2-out walk to Giancarlo Stanton — but struck out everyone else.

Singer allowed a leadoff double to Jasson Dominguez to start the 2nd, then walked Anthony Volpe, and had Austin Wells get on due to an error to load the bases with nobody out — but struck out DJ LeMahieu.

Trent Grisham came thru by getting his 2nd hit of the night — singling in a run for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

Singer then proceeded to strike out Aaron Judge and Ben Rice to end the threat.

2. Chisholm 2-Run Revenge HR in 3rd

And then came the 3rd, when Giancarlo Stanton led off with a single, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. got his revenge.

The video that surfaced before the game showed Jose Trevino instigating the ejection of Chisholm:

Jazz’s ejection the night before had come after a 2-0 pitch was ruled a strike; Chisholm believed it changed the course of the at-bat in which he struck out.

3. Fried Fantastic

Meanwhile Max Fried was simply fantastic again. Out, out, out, single by Elly De La Cruz, out, out, out, single, pickoff, out, out, out — that’s how the innings seemed to go.

De La Cruz got a single in the 1st (but was stranded) and a single in the 4th — and came around to score on a 2-out infield single by Spencer Steer and error at 3rd by Chisholm. That was the only run Fried allowed.

In the 5th, 3rd baseman Santiago Espinal hit a 2-out double, but was promptly picked off 2nd base by Fried.

Fried’s line: 7 IP, 4 hits, 0 earned runs, 7 K’s, 1 walk. He goes to 10-2 1.92.

4. Volpe Sac Fly Scores Rice After Mind Fart

The Yanks made it 4-1 in the top of the 5th against Singer — Ben Rice led off with a hit-by-pitch, Stanton walked, and Jasson Dominguez reached on a 1-out infield single to load the bases.

Anthony Volpe hit a 3-2 sinker to centerfield — and Ben Rice tagged up to come home on the sac fly — then ran back to 3rd to re-tag up — and just made it home safely.

5. Yanks Jump on Bullpen for 6-1 Lead in 6th

Singer left after 5 innings, and the Yanks jumped on reliever Ian Gibaut.

DJ LeMahieu led off the 6th with a single, Trent Grisham reached on an infield single (his 3rd hit of the game), and Aaron Judge doubled in a run to make it 5-1.

With 1 out, Giancarlo Stanton grounded out to shortstop to score a run and make it 6-1.

6. The Martian Steals 2 Bases in 7th

Jasson Dominguez led off the 7th with a single (his 3rd hit of the game), and then proceeded to steal 2nd, and after Volpe struck out, steal 3rd as Austin Wells walked. But LeMahieu hit into a double play so his 2 steals went for naught.

7. Fernando K’s Side in 8th

Fernando Cruz relieved Fried for the 8th and promptly struck out the side 1-2-3 with his Nasty splitter.

8. Austin Tacks on Insurance Run in 9th

Jasson Dominguez was at it again in the 9th — a leadoff double for his 4th hit of the game — all batting right handed.

With 1 out, Austin Wells singled to left scoring The Martian for a 7-1 Yankee lead.

9. Brubaker Finishes

And more feel-good news for NY: JT Brubaker pitched the 9th — and got fly out, ground out, ground out for a 1-2-3 inning and the old ballgame.
