Judge 3 Amazing Catches; Bellinger 3 HR’s; Rodon Amazing Too. NY 11 Cubs 0

Aaron Judge robs Carson Kelly of a HR in the 4th -- his first of 3 amazing catches on the night.

If every win is an amazing win, this one was an Amazing, Amazing win.

Or precisely an Amazing, Amazing, Amazing win.

Aaron Judge made 3 Amazing catches in right field, Cody Bellinger hit 3 (three) HR’s off the team that traded him (to the Yanks for Cody Poteet), and Carlos Rodon pitched a shutout through 8 innings as the Yankees crushed the Cubs 11-0 on a beautiful summer Friday night in the Bronx. Bellinger was robbed of a HR by Kyle Tucker in the 7th — otherwise he would have had an amazing, amazing, amazing, amazing 4-HR night.

The Yankees have now won 5 games in a row — 4 of them Amazing, Amazing wins — all coming after Cody Bellinger made that Amazing catch-and-throw double-play against the Mets to turn the tide of the game, and many predicted, the season. There was that game, then the Cam Schlittler Amazing 100-MPH strikeout game, then the Anthony Volpe amazing-slide-and-come-from-behind-after-being-no-hit-into-8th game.

The only win in the last 5 that wasn’t at least Amazing, Amazing was when Will Warren dueled Logan Gilbert thru 5 until the Yankee big bats arrived in a 10-3 win. Still an Amazing win.

“An elite right fielder,” said manager Aaron Boone about Judge. “And obviously in seasons he’s gone over and played really well in center for us. He’s just an outstanding athlete. Fundamentally so sound out there. The throwing arm, the accuracy with that. Obviously some really great plays tonite. And an exclamation point to Carlos’s night with a dive down the line there with 2 outs and 2 runners on. Just a big time defensive night for Judgy.”

NY improves to 52-41, still 2 games back of Toronto, 3 ahead of surging 3rd-place Boston, and 3.5 ahead of Tampa. Chicago falls to 55-38, in 1st in the NL Central by 1 game.

1. Yanks Jump on Top 3-0

Aaron Judge picked up from the night before — when he hit a sac fly to walk-off the win in the 10th — by hitting a sac fly off Chicago starter Chris Flexen to make it 1-0 Yankees in the bottom of the 3rd. It scored Oswald Peraza who had reached on an infield single and been driven to 3rd by Jasson Dominguez.

Next batter Cody Bellinger hit a 2-run homer to give NY a 3-0 lead.

2. Judge Amazing, Amazing, Amazing Catches

That set the scene for the first 2 Judge Amazing catches — it was 3-0 Yankees with 1 out in the top of the 4th when Judge robbed Carson Kelly of a homer by leaping over the right field wall to pull it in.

The very next batter Pete Crow-Armstrong ripped a line drive to right — but Judge sprinted in and made an Amazing diving catch to end the inning!

All along, and throughout the night, Carlos Rodon‘s wife Ashley was a cheering section on Twitter.

It was 8-0 in the top of the 8th — but runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs and Carlos Rodon looking to get 1 final out to end his night with a shutout — when Aaron Judge got the final out of the inning by sprinting to the corner and making an Amazing diving catch,

2. Bellinger 3 (Three) HR’s

Cody Bellinger hit his 2nd HR in the bottom of the 5th, with Jasson Dominguez on (again) after he had singled to lead off the inning. It came off 38-yr-old righty reliever Caleb Thielbar.

Cody Bellinger almost had 4 HR’s — Kyle Tucker robbed him of a HR in the 7th when he leaped over the wall in right center to haul Bellinger’s drive in.

Cody’s 3rd HR came in the bottom of the 8th, off 25-year-old lefty Jordan Wicks — with Aaron Judge aboard who had walked. It made the game 10-0.

3. Rodon Amazing

Meanwhile Carlos Rodon was being Amazing too. It was just announced before the game that he had made the All Star game as an injury replacement.

And he pitched like an All Star, as he has done throughout the 1st half of the season. He was in total command throughout — pitching a shutout through 8 innings — helped by Judge in the 4th and 8th.

Rodon’s line: 8 IP, 4 hits, 0 runs, 8 K’s, 1 walk.

After walking a batter in the 8th, and then allowing a 2-out single to put runners on 1st and 3rd — Aaron Boone came out to talk to Rodon — and Rodon convinced him to keep him in the game. Boone left the mound and Rodon got a standing ovation.

Judge then made the 3rd of his 3 amazing catches (above) to end the inning!

4. Volpe Drives In a Run

It was a giddy night for the Yanks all around. Anthony Volpe ripped a double to left to score Paul Goldschmidt who had doubled before him — to make it 6-0 in the 6th.

5. Goldschmidt 3 Hits, RBI’s

Goldy got 3 hits and 2 RBI’s.

In the 7th, Ben Rice singled to center with 1 out off Jordan Wicks; Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled to right; and Goldschmidt knocked in Rice with a single to left for a 7-0 game.

JC Escarra followed with an RBI single to make it 8-0.

In the 8th, after Bellinger’s 3rd HR, Ben Rice doubled, and Goldschmidt doubled Rice in for a 11-0 game.

6. Effross Finishes

More good news: Scott Effross pitched a shutout 9th — allowing a leadoff double, but getting groundout, fly out, and strike out swinging for the old ballgame.
