Goldy HR Ties it; Judge HR Wins It! NY 3 Seattle 2

Aaron Judge's MLB-leading 15th HR of the year -- a 444-foot BLAST to left -- puts NY ahead 3-2 in the 8th.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo HR in the 7th to tie the game 2-2, and Aaron Judge hit a solo HR in the 8th to propel the Yankees to a 3-2 win over the Mariners on a Wednesday afternoon in Seattle, giving NY 2 of 3 in the series.

NY was down 2-0 in the 6th against Ace Luis Castillo when Anthony Volpe and Jasson Dominguez hit back-to-back doubles to make it a 2-1 game.

Will Warren “threw down” for NY — striking out 9 in 5 innings, allowing only 4 hits 1 walk, and both runs were initially unearned due to an error charged to DJ LeMahieu at 2nd — although the ruling was changed to a hit — so both runs became earned.

The Yank bullpen of Tyler Matzek, Ian Hamilton, Fernando Cruz, and Luke Weaver pitched shutout ball.

“I thought his stuff was really good,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards about Warren. “They took a lot of good at bats, but he was able to obviously punch out a lot of guys. He was getting ahead really well. He was spinning it really well, and the fastball was again good. Getting ahead routinely set him up. Now he had a lot of 0-2’s to 3-2’s and then finishing them off — which kept him from going real deep in the game.”

NY improves to 25-18, in 1st in the AL East by 3.5 games over Boston. Seattle falls to 23-19, in 1st in the AL West by 1 game over the A’s.

1. Warren “Threw Down”

Will Warren’s stuff was electric. He used his 94-MPH sinker, 94-MPH four-seam fastball, 88-MPH changeup, 82-MPH sweeper, and 80-MPH curve to great effect.

He pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st, striking out the last 2 batters swinging, then struck out the side 1-2-3 in the 2nd. Three of those 5 straight strikeouts came on getting guys to swing and miss on a final-pitch curveball.

Warren got in trouble in the 3rd: Leody Tavares led off with a grounder to 2nd that DJ LeMahieu fielded and threw a perfect throw to 1st to lead the pitcher covering — unfortunately 1st baseman Ben Rice thought it was to him and the miscommunication between Warren and Rice caused the ball to go past both of them for an error later changed to a hit.

Warren then allowed a 1-out single and 2-out walk to load the bases, and then a 2-RBI double to Julio Rodriguez for a 2-0 Seattle lead.

Warren pitched shutout the rest of the way — striking out 2 more in the 4th and one in the 5th before leaving at 92 pitches.

His line: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 runs, 9 K’s, 1 walk. His ERA goes to 4.61.

2. Castillo Tough

Luis Castillo was on his game though — shutting out the Yanks through 5 innings. Castillo doesn’t throw as hard as he did a few years ago, but still clocks 95-MPH with his four-seam fastball, and was getting Yanks out with his slider.

3. Volpe & Martian Doubles Make It 2-1 in 6th

With 2 outs in the 6th however, Anthony Volpe got to Castillo with a 2 out double, and next batter Jasson Dominguez doubled him home for a 2-1 game, Seattle lead.

4. Goldschmidt HR Ties It 2-2 in 7th

Gabe Speier relieved Castillo to start the 7th — and Paul Goldschmidt greeted him with a 377-foot homer to left for a tie game, 2-2.

5. Judge HR Gives Yanks 3-2 Lead in 8th

Carlos Vargas pitched the 8th for Seattle, and Aaron Judge greeted him with a leadoff 444-foot BLAST to left for a 3-2 Yankee lead!

6. Matzek & Hamilton Hold It

Tyler Matzek pitched the bottom of the 6th — the score 2-1 Seattle — and got into a bit of a jam but held court.

Matzek allowed a leadoff single to Cal Raleigh, and then walked Dylan Moore with 2 out — but struck out Taveras and got Ben Williamson to fly out to end the threat.

Ian Hamilton entered a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the 7th and pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out 2.

7. Fernando Gets DP to Get Out of 8th

Fernando Cruz pitched the bottom of the 8th with a 3-2 lead, and got into a little trouble — allowing a 1-out single to Raleigh and then hitting Randy Arozarena with a pitch to put 1st and 2nd with 1 out.

But Fernando got Dylan Moore to ground into a huge double play to end it.

8. Weaver K’s Side in 9th

And then in came Luke Weaver for the 9th — and the was amazing as usual — striking out the side 1-2-3 for the old ballgame.
