Carlos Rodon pitched 3-hit shutout ball into the 7th inning, and left with 2 outs and a 3-0 lead.
At the same time, the Knicks were coming from 20 points down to beat the Celtics in Boston in Game 1 of their best-of-7 series — winning the game in overtime as the Yankees headed to the 8th with the 3-0 lead. A feel-good night all around NYC — especially for Yankee and Knick fans.
But the feel-good vibes were dampened when Devin Williams — pitching in the pouring rain — walked 2 batters and allowed a hit in between 2 strikeouts to leave the bases loaded in the 8th, leaving it up to Luke Weaver to get Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts out.
But Machado doubled in 2 runs to make it a 3-2 game, and Bogaerts singled in 2 more to enable Tampa to come away with a 4-3 victory.
On a RAINY Monday night in the Bronx; the game delayed a half hour by rain — it had rained all day, heavy at times and some were in disbelief they would even try to get the game in. And at times it down-poured during the game, including when Devin Williams was pitching.
“I was kind of battling myself with the landing spot,” said Devin Williams afterwards. “Honestly I felt pretty good,” added Williams when asked if the rain was affecting him. “Obviously it started to pick up there while I was on the mound, and I wasn’t able to make the adjustment. It was the landing spot — I couldn’t figure it out with my fastball and it was getting away from me.”
NY falls to 19-16; San Diego improves to 23-11.
1. Grisham HR Gives Yanks 2-0 Lead in 3rd
San Diego started Nick Pivetta, the 32-year-old 6’5 righty who is having his best year in the majors, coming in at 5-1 1.78. And he rope-a-doped the Yankee lineup, getting in and out of trouble.
Aaron Judge worked a 1-out walk in the 1st, and Ben Rice doubled behind him — but Judge was thrown out at the plate.
Pivetta pitched around a 2-out single by Austin Wells in the 2nd, but the Yanks reached him in the 3rd: a leadoff single by Jorbit Vivas and 2-run homer to right by Trent Grisham.

2. Rodon Exceptional, Again
Meanwhile Carlos Rodon was exceptional, again. It was his 4th straight scintillating performance — he’s allowed 2 earned runs in his last 4 starts, covering 25.2 innings.

3. Volpe Sac Fly Gives Yanks 3-0 Lead in 6th
After allowing the 2-run homer to Grisham in the 3rd, Pivetta pitched around a walk and a single in the 4th, and walked Grisham leading off the 5th but got Judge to ground into a double play.
In the 6th however, Pivetta allowed a leadoff single to Paul Goldschmidt and was yanked for reliever Yuki Matsui. Goldschmidt then stole 2nd, went to 3rd on a throwing error by the catcher, and scored on a sac fly by Anthony Volpe.
4. Devin Gets Washed Out
All was looking good — the Knicks having beaten the Celtics, and the Yanks with the 3-0 lead — when Devin Williams took the mound in the top of the 8th against the bottom of the San Diego lineup — in the rain.
He struck out Martin Maldonado, but as the rain intensified to pouring-rain level, he walked old friend Tyler Wade and allowed a single to center by Brandon Lockridge and here we go again. Devin reared back and struck out Fernando Tatis Jr. — but walked Luis Arraz to load the bases.
In came Luke Weaver — and in a rare off night — Weaver allowed a 2-RBI double to Manny Machado, and a 2-RBI single to Xander Bogaerts and just like that San Diego had a 4-3 lead.
5. Padre Bullpen Saves It
Paul Goldschmidt got a 2-out single in the bottom of the 8th off Jeremiah Estrada, but Cody Bellinger flied out to end the inning.
In the 9th, San Diego closer Robert Suarez struck out Volpe, got Austin Wells to fly out to medium left, and struck out Jasson Dominguez for the old ballgame.
