The Yankees waited out a very tough Jose Berrios, and scored 2 runs on the Toronto bullpen to take a 2-1 lead into the 9th inning — but Devin Williams blew the save — allowing single, hit-by-pitch, and double for a 3-2 Toronto lead — and leaving without getting an out.
Final score Toronto 4 NY 2 on a beautiful, warm Friday night in the Bronx.
Carlos Carrasco started for NY and pitched 5 shutout innings, matching Berrios who pitched a shutout into the 6th.
Good news: the Yankee bottom of the lineup, which has been in a massive slump, produced the 2 Yankee runs. An Anthony Volpe double in the 7th led to the 1st NY run — driven in via an RBI single by Oswaldo Cabrera (who has not been in a slump and is at .277). A Cody Bellinger double, Jazz Chisholm Jr. walk, and Anthony Volpe walk loaded the bases in the 8th — and an Austin Wells sac fly gave NY a 2-1 lead.
Austin Wells went 2-3 in the game with the sac fly and is at .200 now; Volpe is at .202 — both off the interstate. Bellinger went 2-3 and is at .195. Chisholm went 1-2 with 2 walks and is at .172.
“Nothing’s working right now,” said Devin Williams afterwards. “All I can do is continue to work and hopefully get some better results here. It’s not a good feeling to be able to get the job done for the team.”
“We want to do everything we can do to get him right because we know how good he is, and how valuable he’s going to be for us,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards when asked if Williams would be put in lower-leverage situations.
“He’s had a hard time getting count leverage,” noted Boone about Devin’s command. “He’s been behind a lot, and that’s not a great recipe.
NY drops to 15-11; they remain in 1st place, 1.5 ahead of Boston. Toronto improves to 13-13.
1. Carrasco Great
What cosmic space-time continuum shift has caused Marcus Stroman and Carlos Carrasco — core starters for the 2021 and 2022 Mets whom were then discarded — key pitchers in the 2025 Yankee starting rotation?
And yet here they are and Carlos Carrasco has been dynamite — like he was for the Mets in 2022 at age 35 when he went 15-7 3.97.
He’s 38 yrs old now and is as wily as they get. He used a 92-MPH fastball and lots of sinkers, sliders, and changeups to get easy outs and pitch 5 shutout innings.

Carrasco was helped in the 2nd by another excellent play by Gold Glover Anthony Volpe.

Carrasco was never really in trouble — the closest being when he walked 2 guys in the 4th, the 2nd guy with 2 outs. He was helped in the 4th after the 1st walk, by a tremendous leaping spear of a line drive by Chisholm at 2nd.

He allowed a leadoff double in the 5th, but then got lineout, fly out, ground out to end it.
2. Hill Allows HR
Tim Hill relieved Carrasco to start the 6th, and allowed a leadoff homer to Vladimir Guerrero Jr to give Toronto a 1-0 lead.
3. Berrios Tough
On the other hill was Jose Berrios, who the Yanks have belted in the past, and have been shut down by when he is on his game. Tonite he was on his game — retiring the first 7 batters of the game before Austin Wells and Oswaldo Cabrera had back-to-back singles in the 3rd, putting runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out.
But Trent Grisham grounded to 1st and Austin Wells was thrown out at home.
Berrios got the first 2 outs of the 4th before Cody Bellinger singled and Chisholm walked, but Volpe hit a LONG FLY BALL to the wall in center for out #3. It was a pre-cursor of good things to come.
Austin Wells led off the 5th with a single, but Berrios got Oswaldo to pop out and struck out Trent Grisham. Aaron Judge singled with 2 outs, but Berrios again held court — getting Ben Rice to ground out.
Toronto got Berrios a 1-0 lead in the top of the 6th, and he started the bottom of the 6th, getting the 1st out but was relieved after walking Cody Bellinger. The Yanks had worked him to 89 pitches.
4. Yanks Run themselves Out of Rally in 6th
With 1 out, 6’2 lefty Brendan Little relieved Berrios — and Bellinger tried to steal 2nd but was thrown out by Alejandro Kirk.
Chisholm then singled to center — and was also thrown out by Kirk trying to steal 2nd.
5. Volpe Double! Oswaldo RBI
The long fly to the wall by Volpe in the 4th was a sign of good things for Volpe — who doubled to opposite field right leading off the bottom of the 7th against Little.
Next batter Austin Wells hit a DEEP FLY TO THE WALL in center — moving Volpe to 3rd, and Oswaldo Cabrera singled to left for a 1-1 tie.

6. Fernando Holds Fort
Fernando Cruz allowed a leadoff single in the top of the 8th, but then got ground out, ground out, fly out for another shutout inning with his amazing splitter interjected with 92-MPH sinker and four-seam fastball.
7. Bellinger Double! Wells RBI
Cody Bellinger ripped a 1-out double to center in the bottom of the 8th off Mason Fluharty; Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed with a walk, and Fluharty hit Volpe on the foot with a pitch to load the bases.
Austin Wells hit a sac fly to right to put NY up 2-1.

8. Devin No Good. Again
And then it was to the top of the 9th and here came Devin Williams for the save. Boone had used Luke Weaver in a similar spot the game before against Cleveland — a game NY needed to win. Fernando Cruz had pitched the 8th and Weaver the 9th.
But Devin hadn’t pitched in 5 days so here he came.
- He went 3-1 on D Williams before allowing a single to right on a 93-MPH fastball.
- He then hit Gimenez with a 2-2 fastball that clocked 95-MPH.
- He then threw an 0-1 changeup to Alejandro Kirk, who hit a drive to right center over Grisham’s head for a 2-run double. Toronto 3 NY 2.
Mark Leiter Jr. came in and allowed a single to make it 4-2 before getting 3 straight outs.
In the 9th, Ben Rice got a 2-out single off reliever Jeff Hoffman — but Paul Goldschmidt popped out to 2nd for the old ballgame.
