Chisholm Keys Yank Rallies in 2nd & 8th for the Win. NY 4 Baltimore 2

Jazz Chisholm Jr. ripped a 2-RBI double in the 8th inning to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 Yankee lead and key a come-from-behind 4-2 win in the Bronx on a warm (90-degrees), cloudy Sunday afternoon (the game starting at 11:30 am).

Chisholm also ripped a double in the 2nd inning, scoring on a single by DJ LeMahieu for the Yanks’ 1st run of the game — Chisholm losing a shoe as he rounded 3rd, then barreling into catcher Maverick Handley who was in the basepath trying to catch the incoming throw.

Will Warren got knocked around for 2 runs in the 1st inning, but then settled down and threw down one of his best performances of the season — keeping Baltimore at 2 runs into the 7th.

Tim Hill got the last 2 outs of the 7th with a runner on 2nd — but got into trouble himself by walking the first 2 batters of the 8th. Fernando Cruz came in and heroically struck out the side — keeping the score 2-1 Baltimore.

That gave the Yanks a chance — and they took it in the bottom of the 8th on a leadoff single by Ben Rice, 1-out single by Giancarlo Stanton, and the 2-RBI double by Chisholm — with Chisholm going to 3rd on the throw home. DJ LeMahieu followed with a grounder to shortstop, and Chisholm dashed home — safe at the plate as old friend Gary Sanchez dropped the ball.

Devin Williams was in command in the 9th, allowing a 2-out single, but getting a non-agita save.

“His growth has been awesome to see,” said manager Aaron Boone about Will Warren. “We obviously were very high on him last year, even though he had some struggles in AAA and struggles at the big league level, but he also flashed some success too. And the good news is he’s continued to grow from that.”

“He had a good winter,” continued Boone on Warren “He came in a better, and more polished pitcher in Spring Training. He’s taken his lumps a little bit early in the season; grown from that; learned from those things. He’s doing a much better job of bring aggressive, knowing that he can trust his stuff and be in the zone. So it’s good to see growth, for a talented guy.”

NY improves to 45-32 and gains a game on everyone in the AL East — they are now 2.5 ahead of Tampa, 4 ahead of Toronto, and 6 ahead of Boston. Baltimore falls to 33-44, 12 games back.

1. Warren Knocked Around in 1st then Gets Tough

Will Warren got Knocked around in the 1st inning — game time start 11:30 am. Jackson Holiday led off the game with a single, then Warren hit Ramon Urias with a pitch.

Warren then picked Holiday off 2nd for a big out.

But Warren walked Gunnar Henderson, and coughed up an RBI single to Ryan O’Hearn. After a fly out by Ramon Laureano, Colton Cowser doubled in Gunnar Henderson and it was 2-0 Baltimore.

Warren got tough — getting a groundout to end the inning. The Yanks went out 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 1st so just like that Warren was back on the mound on the humid, 90-degree day.

But he buckled down — pitching a 1-2-3 top of the 2nd, and then motoring, allowing but a:

  • 2-out single in the 3rd,
  • 2-out single in the 4th, and
  • 2-out walk in the 5th.

Warren pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 6th. He kept the Yanks in the game, down 2-1.

2. Kremer Tough — Chisholm & DJ Get a Run in 2nd

Meanwhile Dean Kremer was tough too. He pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st, 4th and 5th.

The Yanks got a run against him him in the 2nd — Jazz Chisholm Jr. ripped a 2-out double to right, and DJ LeMahieu singled to left — Chisholm racing around 3rd — losing a shoe — and barreling into catcher Maverick Handley in the basepath who had moved up the line from home to catch the incoming throw. Baltimore 2 NY 1.

Maverick was knocked out on the play, and replaced in the game by Gary Shanchez.

3. Yanks Blow Chance in 6th

The Yanks had a minor rally in the 4th against Kremer — consecutive singles with 2 outs by Aaron Judge and Ben Rice, but Cody Bellinger struck out to end the inning.

NY blew a real chance in the 6th when Aaron Judge led off with a walk, and Ben Rice doubled him to 3rd. With 2nd and 3rd, nobody out, Bellinger hit a shallow fly to right and Giancarlo Stanton struck out.

Baltimore relieved Kremer with Keegan Akin — and the lefty got Chisholm to fly out to right.

4. Hill Gets Out of Trouble in 7th; Gets Into Trouble in 8th

Warren was cruising into the 7th when Dylan Carlson led off with a double. Down 2-1, Warren got a big strikeout of Gary Sanchez and then was relieved by Tim Hill — who got a fly out and ground out to strand Carlson at 2nd.

But Hill got into trouble himself in the top of the 8th, walking the first 2 batters.

5. Fernando Strikes Out Side with 2 On in 8th

Fernando Cruz came in with 1st and 2nd, nobody out, NY clinging to a 2-1 deficit — and was heroic — striking out Laureano, Colton Cowser, and Cedric Mullins all swinging at his filthy splitter.

6. Chisholm Keys Yank Rally in 8th

And that gave the Yanks a chance — down 2-1.

Baltimore brought in Baker for the 8th, and Ben Rice led off with a single to center. Cody Bellinger grounded out, moving Rice to 2nd.

Giancarlo Stanton ripped a single to left — putting runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out. Paul Goldschmidt came in to run for Stanton.

And Jazz Chisholm Jr. came up with the big hit of the game — a ripping double to center, scoring Rice and Goldschmidt for a 3-2 Yankee lead.

DJ LeMahieu then hit a grounder to shortstop, and Chisholm dashed home — safe as Gary Sanchez dropped the ball (he was charged with an error). Yankees 4 Orioles 2.

7. Devin the Save

And just like that NY had the lead and Devin Williams came in for the save. And he was good — getting a fly out, a strike out of Gary Sanchez, allowing a 2-out single to Jackson Holiday, but getting Ramon Urias to ground out to Chisholm at 3rd for the old ballgame.
