Jazz Chisholm Jr. accounted for the first 5 runs, Cody Bellinger hit a HR for the next 3, and Aaron Judge capped it off with two 2-run HR’s to back a shutout into the 5th by Marcus Stroman for a blowout 12-5 Yankee win at the Stadium on a hot, sunny, summer Sunday afternoon. Dog panting weather.
The game was a 10-1 laugher when JT Brubaker relieved Stroman for the 6th — and didn’t do well — turning it into a 10-5 game with runners on 2nd and 3rd and 2 outs. But Jonathan Loaisiga got the final out of the inning and Judge added insurance in the 7th with his 2nd HR of the game, and 30th of the year.
Tim Hill, Ian Hamilton, and Luke Weaver finished up with a shutout inning each.
Chisholm started the scoring with a solo HR off former Yank Luis Severino in the 2nd, then tripled in 2 runs in the 3rd, and scored on a wild pitch. Judge followed with a 2-run HR in the 4th, and Bellinger hit a 3-run HR in the 5th for the 10-1 lead.
Chisholm also made some great plays at 3rd base, turning double plays with strong throws and Paul Goldschmidt making great picks at 1st.
‘I’m just out there to help my team win in any way possible,” said Jazz afterwards. “If it’s just energy that I have to bring, then that’s what I have to do.”
“A few great plays out there,” said Boone about Jazz’s defense and spark. “Couple of long, really good throws; Goldy doing his thing across the diamond. Obviously the HR to get us started. And then that hit we’ve been kind of looking for — traffic, bases loaded — puts one in the gap clears the bases, and the guys were off and running from there. It’s nice to see a performance like that today.”
NY improves to 48-35 and go back to 1.5 games in 1st in the AL East over Tampa, 3 over Toronto, and 8 over Boston. The Vagabond A’s fall to 34-52.
1. Chisolm Produces First 5 Runs
Old friend Luis Severino is not doing so well. After a good year with the Mets last season, he started the year with a 6-inning shutout performance, but has been banged around a lot since then. He has had 9 quality starts, and 7 very poor starts. His record coming into the game was 2-8 4.83.
It is now 2-9 5.18.
Jazz HR
He pitched a shutout 1st, but Jazz Chisholm ripped the first pitch of the 2nd, a 96-MPH sinker, 362 feet to right for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

Jazz Bases-Clearing Triple
Trent Grisham got on base leading off the 3rd due to an error by 2nd baseman Luis Urias, and after 1 out Severino walked Aaron Judge and hit Ben Rice with a pitch to load the bases.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. then unloaded the bases with a triple to right center off a changeup and it was 4-0 Yanks.

Jazz Scores on Wild Pitch
Chisholm then scored on a wild pitch by Severino — and it was 5-0 Yanks.
2. Judge 1st HR Makes It 7-0
Severino didn’t last the 4th. He got the first 2 outs, but then Cody Bellinger doubled and Aaron Judge hit his 29th HR of the year — a 402-foot blast to left. NY 7 Vagabond A’s 0.

Severino then hit Ben Rice with a pitch for the 2nd time — and was yanked for 6’3 lefty Hogan Harris.
3. Stroman a Shutout into 5th
Meanwhile Marcus Stroman was looking real good in his first appearance since coming off the Injured List, where he’d been since getting ripped for 5 runs in the 1st inning on April 11 — his 3rd start of the year.
Stroman had been on the IL due to knee inflammation — arising from a torn ACL he suffered in 2015.
Stroman was good — getting lots of groundouts and easy fly outs with his sinker.
Jazz Defense
Stroman was helped by excellent infield defense and pick after nice pick at 1st by Paul Goldschmidt. Jazz Chisholm in particular made a number of good plays at 3rd, including a tremendous one in the top of the 3rd — fielding a sharp grounder, outracing the runner to 3rd for a force, and throwing a strike to 1st where Goldschmidt made the pick for a double play.

Stroman had a shutout going in the 5th when with 1 out catcher Willie MacIver hit an 87-MPH sinker in the 10th pitch of the at bat for a 386-foot homer to left and a 7-1 game.
Stroman left after 5 fine innings; his line: 5 IP, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 K, 2 walks. He wins to go 1-1 8.16.
4. Bellinger HR Makes It 10-1
The Yanks got to lefty Hogan Harris in the 5th. Anthony Volpe singled to right with 1 out, and moved to 2nd on a groundout. With 2 outs, Volpe stole 3rd and Trent Grisham worked a walk.
With runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs, Cody Bellinger hit a high drive to right center — 378 feet for a 3-run HR and 10-1 game.

5. Brubaker Has Had Better Days
JT Brubaker came in for the 6th — and turned the 10-1 laugher into a ballgame. It went like this:
- Walk,
- Double,
- Infield single by Nick Kurtz to make it 10-2,
- Hit-by-pitch of Max Muncy to load the bases,
- Walk of Tyler Soderstrom to make it 10-3,
- Groundout by Luis Urias to make it 10-4, and
- Walk of catcher Willie MacIver to load the bases again — still with only 1 out.
And Brubaker was Yanked.
Jonathan Loaisiga came in and got a groundout, scoring a run to make it 10-5, and a strike out to end the inning.
6. Judge 2nd HR Makes It 12-5
Trent Grisham worked another walk to start the bottom of the 7th against 6’4 righty Tyler Ferguson, and Aaron Judge followed a batter later with a 426-foot blast to left for his 30th HR of the year and 12-5 Yankee lead.

7. Hill, Hamilton, Weaver Good
Meanwhile:
- Tim Hill pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th;
- Ian Hamilton pitched a shutout 8th — walking the leadoff batter but then getting 3 straight outs including 2 strikeouts; and
- Luke Weaver pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th, striking out JJ Bleday for the old ballgame.
Etcetera
- Cody Bellinger went 3-5 with the HR, 3 RBI’s, and 3 runs scored. He’s batting .270.
- Aaron Judge went 2-4 with 2 HR’s, 4 RBI, and 3 runs scored. He’s batting .356.
- Jazz Chisholm Jr. went 2-4 with the HR, 4 RBI’s, and 2 runs scored. He’s batting .242.
