Big G & Judge Hammer Trevor Rogers. NY 8 Baltimore 4

Big G 2-run HR off Trevor Rogers in the 1st inning -- the first of two 2-run HR's for Giancarlo on the night.

Trevor Rogers no-hit the Yanks into the 6th inning exactly one week ago in Baltimore, and came into this game with a 9-2 1.35 record.

But this time Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge Hammered the 6’5 lefty — Big G with a 2-run HR in the 1st, Aaron Judge with a 2-run HR in the 3rd, and Big G following with another 2-run HR later in the 3rd — en route to an 8-4 NY win at Yankee Stadium on a beautiful, 70-degree Friday night.

Will Warren allowed a couple of homerun balls — a 3-run HR to Jake Westbrook in the 3rd that temporarily gave Baltimore the lead, and a solo HR to Tyler O’Neill leading off the 6th — but pitched well enough otherwise to get the win.

The Yanks added insurance runs in the 6th and 7th and the bullpen of Mark Leiter Jr., Tim Hill, Fernando Cruz, Camilo Doval, and David Bednar shut the Orioles out the last 4 innings.

Toronto beat Tampa a half hour before NY won so the Yanks hung on to a 1st place tie — needing to overtake Toronto by a game to avoid the Wild Card series, with 2 games left.

The Batting Title Race & HR-Record/MVP Watch

In the batting title race:

  • Aaron Judge went 1-3 with 2 walks — raising his average a hair to .330.
  • Jacob Wilson went 1-4 — lowering his average a hair to .313.

Later in the evening, Cal Raleigh did not hit a HR in the Seattle game — he remains at 60 with 2 games to go in the season.

Boone’s Thoughts

“Really good at bats against him,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards about Rogers. “Obviously he’s had an amazing year and an amazing run. And to hang that level of at bats — probably benefited from seeing him last week a little bit — guys were able to process some things, and executed a really nice game plan. And the 2 big boys really leaned on a couple.”

“I knew going into today we had a really, really tough matchup,” added Boone. “And to look up … especially after they hit the 3-run HR to take the lead, and then boom answer right back with the back-to-back 2-run HR’s by Judgy and Big G. Just impressive.”

On Warren, Boone had this to say: “A lot of really good. Obviously 2 mistakes and one was a 3-ball. Up until that point he was really dominant.”

NY improves to 92-68, in a 1st place tie with Toronto and 4 ahead of Boston, which won. Baltimore falls to 75-85.

1. Giancarlo 2-Run HR in 1st

The Yanks came in knowing they had to figure out Trevor Rogers in some way to get a win. And Rogers got Paul Goldschmidt to fly out leading off the game, then struck out Aaron Judge — and here we go — a long night ahead.

But Cody Bellinger singled, and Giancarlo Stanton hit an 0-2, 93-MPH fastball 397 feet to opposite field right and just like that NY was on top 2-0!

2. Warren Good But Coughs Up 3-Run HR in 3rd

Will Warren meanwhile looked nasty — retiring the first 8 batters of the game — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st and 2nd — striking out 3 — and getting the first 2 outs of the 3rd.

But with 2 outs, Cody Mayo singled, Warren walked Jackson Holliday on a 3-2 sweeper, and Jake Westbrook lined an 0-2 sweeper just over the wall in left for a 3-run HR.

A shaken Warren then allowed a single to Gunnar Henderson before getting the final out of the 3rd.

The Yanks got Warren back a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the 3rd, and he responded by pitching a shutout 4th and 5th — allowing but a 2-out double to Colton Cowser in the 4th and a 2-out single to Westburg in the 5th.

Warren allowed a leadoff HR to Tyler O’Neill in the 6th to make it a 6-4 game, and was relieved by Mark Leiter Jr.

Warren’s line: 5 IP, 6 hits, 4 runs, 7 K’s, 1 walk. He was saved by not walking anyone — and would end up getting the win to go 9-8 4.44. A good rookie season.

“If you were to tell me at the start of the year he’s going to make 33 starts and give you 160 innings, strike out 10 for 9, have some bumps along the way…”, added Boone about Warren’s season. “Man he did a lot of really good things and was a staple in our rotation. To have a guy who is a rookie give you 150+ innings — especially behind what Carlos (Rodon) and Max (Fried) were able to do — that’s really valuable, and he’s been a valuable piece to that rotation.”

3. Judge, Giancarlo 2-Run HRs Put Yanks Back on Top

With NY down 3-2 after the Westbrook HR in the top of the 3rd — and Toronto in a 2-2 tie against Tampa — NY needed to figure out Trevor Rogers some more.

And they did — Jose Caballero working a 4-pitch walk to lead off the bottom of the 3rd, and a batter later Aaron Judge smashing a 90-MPH sinker 423 feet to center for a 4-3 Yankee lead.

Next batter Cody Bellinger walked, and Giancarlo Stanton ripped a first-pitch, 84-MPH changeup 451 feet to center — a Stantonian Blast — for a 6-3 Yankee lead!

4. Hill Saves Leiter & Picks Up D in 6th

Warren pitched well into the 6th when he allowed the leadoff HR to O’Neil and was yanked for Mark Leiter Jr.

And first batter Dylan Carlson reached on an error by 1st baseman Paul Goldschmidt. Leiter then walked Adley Rutschman so the Orioles had 1st and 2nd and nobody out in a 6-4 game.

Leiter got tough — getting Colton Cowser to groundout on a splitter — moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd — then striking out Basallo for the 2nd out. But he walked Coby Mayo on a 3-2 curveball to load the bases and was relieved by Tim Hill.

Hill came in throwing strikes — and got Jackson Holiday to hit a grounder to 1st that Hill took the throw on for the out. PHEW.

5. Wells RBI Double Gets Insurance Run in 6th

Rogers was yanked after the 3rd inning — replaced by Colin Selby who pitched a shutout 4th and 5th.

Yennier Cano came in for the Orioles in the 6th, and Trent Grisham led off against the 6’4 righty with a single to right. Cano struck out Jazz Chisholm, but Anthony Volpe got an excuse-me pop-up single into no-man’s-land in right to put runners on 1st and 2nd.

And Austin Wells hammered a single to right, scoring Chisholm with Volpe going to 3rd. NY 7 Baltimore 4.

NY could have had more runs — but Volpe was picked off 3rd for the 2nd out.

6. Fernando Shaky But Gets Final Out of 7th

Tim Hill got the first 2 outs of the 7th, then yielded to righty Fernando Cruz to face righty Tyler O’Neil.

But Cruz walked O’Neil, and walked Carlson too — before getting Adley Rutschman to fly out to left. Phew.

7. Big G RBI Groundout Gets Insurance Run in 7th

Cano stayed in for the 7th — and the Yanks pounced — Goldschmidt leading off with a single and Aaron Judge working a walk.

Jose Castillo was brought in — and Cody Bellinger greeted him with a single to load the bases, then Giancarlo Stanton grounded out to 3rd — scoring a run for an 8-4 Yankee lead.

NY would load the bases again on a Trent Grisham walk — but Chisholm hit a grounder to 1st — Judge out at home — and Volpe made out to end the inning. Still, NY was up 8-4.

8. Doval K’s Side in 8th

Camilo Doval looked dynamite in the top of the 8th — striking out the side.

9. Bednar Finishes

And David Bednar wrapped up — allowing a walk and an infield single to start the 9th — but getting a fielder’s choice groundout, then striking out O’Neil and Jeremiah Jackson swinging for the old ballgame.
