Unbelievably — as if some dark force from above was dictating events — all the new guys the Yankees got at the trade deadline the day before SUCKED — and caused NY to blow multiple leads in losing 13-12 to the Marlins on a Friday night in Miami.
- Jake Bird sucked — only getting 1 out while allowing a walk and 3 hits including a Grand Slam to turn a 9-4 Yankee lead into a 9-8 game in the 7th,
- David Bednar sucked — coming in for Bird and immediately allowing a HR to tie the game, then a couple of singles that put Miami ahead 10-9,
- Camilo Doval sucked — coming in for the save in the 9th protecting a 12-10 lead, and blowing it, and
- Jose Caballero sucked — allowing a single to right in the bottom of the 9th to go under his glove and all the way to the wall — allowing runners on 1st and 2nd to both score, and the batter to go all the way to 3rd — where he scored on a groundout for the Miami win.
You have to wonder if Marcus Stroman knows voodoo.
The insane loss obscured many heroics by numerous Yankees — including:
- A clutch, game-tying HR by Anthony Volpe in the 8th — amongst his 4 hits that also included a clutch, RBI double with 2 outs in the 9th,
- A 3-run blast by Giancarlo Stanton that put NY up 3-0 in the 4th,
- clutch RBI singles by Jasson Dominguez (who had 3 hits, 2 stolen bases, and a great catch in left) and Cody Bellinger that put NY up 6-0 in the 5th,
- A big 3-run HR by Trent Grisham that turned a 6-4 Yankee lead into a 9-4 lead in the 7th, and
- Yankee small ball in the 9th that included Caballero coming in as a pinch runner after Ben Rice got on with a 2-out single — and stealing 2nd base, then scoring on a clutch Ryan McMahon hit. Volpe followed with his clutch, 2-out RBI double.
In the end a horrible, unbelievable loss.
- Afterwards, Jake Bird said “I just think it’s one of those days. You don’t want those days to happen but they do on occasion. Just have to look back at it, learn from it, and be better.”
- David Bednar said, “Definitely not an ideal start by any means.”
- Jose Caballero said, “I feel sad, because it was definitely a game we could have won.”
- Camilo Doval said, “I felt really good out there; I felt like I was executing good pitches. But unfortunately sometimes you can execute and things don’t work out.”
As if a dark force above was controlling things.
NY falls to 60-50, and remain 3.5 behind Toronto but only .5 ahead of Boston. Miami — which has been red hot — improves to 53-55.
1. Big G Puts NY Up 3-0 in 4th
The game started off as — get this — a pitchers’ duel — with Carlos Rodon and Janson Junk matching 0’s for the first 3 innings.
Junk was using lots of 81-MPH sweepers, an 82-MPH curve, and an 88-MPH slider that made a 94-MPH four-seam fastball look faster.
But in the top of the 4th, the Yankees got to Junk’s junk — Trent Grisham and Jasson Dominguez leading off with consecutive singles to right. Cody Bellinger flied out to right, sending Grisham to 3rd on a sac fly — and The Martian promptly stole 2nd.
With 1 out, Giancarlo Stanton ripped a 409-foot bullet to left — that almost hit a picture on the scoreboard of Junk’s face in the face — for a 3-0 Yankee lead.

2. The Martian & Bellinger Put NY Up 6-0
The Yanks continued to attack Junk’s junk in the 5th. Anthony Volpe singled to left with 1 out, and then stole 2nd after Austin Wells flied out for the 2nd out.
Trent Grisham worked a walk to put runners on 1st and 2nd, and Jasson Dominguez came through again with a clutch, 2-out single to center for a 4-0 Yankee lead.

3. Rodon Can’t Get thru the 5th
And Rodon was sailing — helped in the 1st inning by a terrific running catch in the left field corner by The Martian.

Rodon had a no hitter going thru 4 innings, with 7 strikeouts and a 6-0 lead.

And then the roof caved in. Rodon allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the 5th to Eric Wagaman — breaking up his no hitter.
Next batter Javier Sanoja hit a HR to right for a 6-2 game.

Rodon struck out the next batter but then walked Xavier Edwards. He struck out Agustin Ramirez for his 9th strikeout of the game — but walked DH Heriberto Hernandez to put runners on 1st and 2nd and 2 out — and was pulled by Aaron Boone. He would not get the win.
Loaisiga Puts Fuel on the Fire
In came Jonathan Loaisiga.
And first thing Loaisiga did was hit shortstop Otto Lopez with a pitch loading the bases.
The next thing he did is allow a 2-RBI bloop single to center by pinch hitter Hicks and it was a 6-4 game as Yankee Twitter HOWLED.

4. Headrick Pitches Shutout 6th
Brent Headrick pitched the 6th — and the 6’6 lefty did what he has been doing regularly: threw a shutout inning and looked good doing so.
Austin Wells botched the catch of a pop up in foul ground, taking charge where Ryan McMahon seemed to have the ball — and then having the ball bound off his mitt. That kept the batter Jakob Marsee alive, and he worked a walk.
But Headrick got Xavier Edwards to line out to Bellinger in right to end the inning.
5. Grisham HR Puts NY Up 9-4
And then the Yanks seemed to put the game away in the top of the 7th.
Anthony Volpe led off with a single to left, and Austin Wells made up for his error with another single to left. That brought up Trent Grisham who parked a 3-run HR to right for a 9-4 Yankee lead.

6. Bird & Bednar Suck in the 7th
New Yankee Jake Bird came in for the 7th and all seemed fine.
Until he allowed a leadoff single, struck out a batter, allowed a single to left by Otto Lopez, and walked Liam Hicks.
And then Kyle Stowers hit a grand slam to left — just out of the leaping range of The Martian — for a 9-8 game.

Exit Jake Bird stage left.
Enter David Bednar — the Ace Reliever the Yanks picked up.
Bednar got a groundout for the 2nd out — but then coughed up a 378-foot HR to left by Sanoja for a 9-9 tie.

It got worse.
Next batter Jakob Marsee doubled to center, Xavier Edwards reached on a dribbler towards 2nd that Volpe couldn’t come up with — Yankee Twitter howled at Volpe but it was not his fault; it was a hit.
And then Agustin Ramirez singled to center for a 10-9 Miami lead.
7. Volpe HR Ties It in 8th!
Now the Yankees were behind a run, and it was the 8th inning.
But Anthony Volpe stepped up leading off the inning with a heroic BLAST to left — a 421-foot HR — for a 10-10 tie.

8. Yank & Caballero Small Ball Puts ‘Em Up 12-10 in 9th
David Bednar pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 8th and so it was a 10-10 tie to the top of the 9th.
Miami’s Anthony Bender got the first 2 outs, but Ben Rice got a single to right on a 2-2 pitch. Jose Caballero came in as a pinch runner — and stole 2nd.
Ryan McMahon fell behind in the count 1-2, then worked it to 3-2 before ripping an 83-MPH sweeper for a single to center and 11-10 Yankee lead!

9. Doval & Caballero Suck in 9th
On the broadcast, Suzyn Waldman mentioned that manager Aaron Boone said he had ‘new toys to play with’ from the trade deadline acquisitions.
So Boone reached out to his 4th new toy — Camilo Doval — to pitch the 9th and get the save in a 12-10 game.
And Doval got the first out — a grounder.
But Sanoja singled, Doval walked Marsee, and Xavier Edwards singled to right — UNDER THE GLOVE of Caballero who was in right after coming in as a pinch runner — the ball going all the way to the wall as 2 runs scored and Edwards went to 3rd with 1 out. Tie game.

And then Agustin Ramirez hit a nibbler in front of the plate that Austin Wells had to scramble out to field as Edwards scored for the old ballgame.
