Yanks’ Last-Out Comeback Falls Short. Texas 10 NY 6

Trent Grisham Grand Slam off the foul pole in 9th.

Down 10-2 with 2 outs and nobody on in the 9th, the Yanks launched an improbable comeback — 3 straight walks and a Grand Slam by Trent Grisham made it 10-6, then consecutive singles and the Yanks were a bloop and a blast away from tieing it.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a blast to left that Wyatt Langford made a tremendous leaping catch on, robbing Giancarlo of a homer — and that was that. It would have been a 3-run homer to make it 10-9.

The last-out comeback put a nicer face on a disaster of a game, where Marcus Stroman was beat up for 5 runs in 3.2 innings, and bullpen arms Tim Mayza, Mark Leiter Jr. and Ron Marinaccio let the lead build. On the other hill, old friend Nathan Eovaldi shut the Yankees down, sans a 2-run homer by Juan Soto in the 5th.

“He’s tough too when he gets a lead, because he fills up the strike zone so much,” said Aaron Boone about Eovaldi. “You want to have some patience but he’s ahead of you and he’s after you, You try to build some innings and build some at bats but it’s tough because he’s so good on being on the attack, and getting the upper hand. His stuff was good — fastball, cutter, splitter — mixed in the breaking ball a little bit too that he got some swing and miss on.”

NY falls to 80-60 but good news Baltimore lost to the ChiSox so the Yanks remain .5 behind. Texas wins the 3-game series and improves to 67-73.

1. Stroman Beat Up

Marcus Stroman did not have his best stuff. He allowed a run in the 1st on consecutive 1-out singles and a groundout, and then another run in the 2nd on consecutive doubles to lead off the inning by Leody Tavares and Ezequiel Duran.

Stroman pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 3rd, but was knocked out in the 4th — consecutive 1-out singles, a groundout to score a run, and then a 2-out double by Wyatt Langford to score a run and make it 4-0 Texas.

Jonathan Lowe singled in a run and it was 5-0 Texas and Stroman was yanked at 88 pitches. Scott Effross came in to get the final out of the inning.

“They got me some long counts, and they put the barrel on the ball later in those counts,” said Stroman. “I felt like I wasn’t executing all day. One of those where I felt like I wasn’t on, and just have to flush it and get ready for the next one.”

2. Soto Finally Gets to Eovaldi with HR in 5th

Meanwhile Nathan Eovaldi was on his game. The Yanks had beaten him up earlier this season, but not this time. He pitched around a 1-out double by Juan Soto in the 1st, and threw a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd.

Down 2-0, the Yanks threatened in the 3rd — loading the bases after 2 were out on a single and 2 walks; but Jazz Chisholm Jr.flied out to right.

Eovaldi pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 4th, but Juan Soto got to him in the 5th; with NY down 5-0, Gleyber Torres worked a 2-out walk and Soto hit a 350-foot homer to left. Texas 5 NY 2.

Eovaldi finished with a 1-2-3 shutout 6th and allowing just a 1-out single in a shutout 7th. He wins to go 11-7 3.55.

3. Mayza, Leiter, Marinaccio Let Lead Build

Scott Effross pitched a shutout 5th, but Tim Mayza got in trouble in the 6th — getting the first out but then allowing a double, walk, and single to load the bases.

Mark Leiter Jr.came in and allowed a 2-RBI double to Adolis Garcia and it was a 7-2 game. He then threw a wild pitch to make it 8-2 before getting the final 2 outs.

Ron Marinaccio came in for the 7th, and allowed a walk, and RBI double by Duran, and a 2-out RBI single to Langford and it was 10-2.

4. Yanks Last-Out Comeback Falls Short

Matt Festa pitched the 9th for Texas, and got the first 2 outs. With NY down 10-2, the game was just about a wrap when Festa walked 3 straight batters — Oswaldo Cabrera, Jose Trevino, and Gleyber Torres. Festa had 2 strikes on both Trevino and Gleyber before walking them.

Chase Anderson relieved Festa, and went to 1-2 on Trent Grisham — before Grisham worked the count to 3-2 then hit a Grand Slam off the foul pole in right.

Anderson then went 1-2 on Duke Ellis, but he singled for his first hit as a Yankee. Anderson went 3-2 on Jazz Chisholm Jr. and the Yanks were down to their final strike for their 5th straight batter. But Chisholm reached on an infield single and the Yanks were a bloop and a blast away!

Texas brought in their ace reliever Kirby Yates to face Giancarlo Stanton. Yates went 0-2 on Stanton and again the Yanks were down to their final strike — the 6th straight batter! But Stanton worked the count to 2-2, fouled off a pitch, then hit a Drive to left that looked like it could go for a 10-9 game — but Langford leaped and caught it at the wall, robbing Stanton of a homer for the old ballgame.
