Yank Lineup Snuffed by Quintana & Pen. Mets 3 Yankees 2

The Mets threw lefty Jose Quintana at the Yankees, and manager Aaron Boone responded by starting a righty-laden lineup that included Jahmai Jones leading off and JD Davis batting cleanup — a lineup that even former Yankee Jose Canseco mocked before the game.

The strategy backfired as the Yankees were snuffed by Quintana and the Mets pen, 3-2. On a humid Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.

The Mets walked Aaron Judge his first 4 times up, and were able to get Juan Soto to go 0-4. In the 9th, Soto walked with 1 out, and Aaron Judge came to the plate as the winning run — but struck out.

Luis Gil pitched 5 good innings for the Yanks, leaving with a 1-1 tie. But Michael Tonkin coughed up a 2-run homer to Jeff McNeil in the 6th and that was all the Mets needed.

“Obviously didn’t get a lot going,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “We had some decent at bats in the big spots; and even in that last inning, felt like we had some good at bats — Diekman made some pitches when he needed to. Tough one.”

The Yankees fall to 60-43, and remain 1.5 behind Baltimore which also lost. The Mets improve to 52-48.

1. Gleyber HR Puts Yanks on Top Early

Gleyber Torres put the Yankees up 1-0 in the bottom of the 2nd with a 365-foot homer to right center off Jose Quintana.

2. Gil Good

Luis Gil pitched well — retiring the first 6 batters of the game, pitching around a leadoff walk and 2-out double in the 3rd, and pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th, before getting into trouble in the 5th — 3 consecutive singles to lead off the inning, loading the bases with nobody out in a 1-0 game.

But Gil got out of the jam with only 1 run allowed — he got Harrison Bader to hit a shallow fly out to right, then hit Francisco Lindor to force in a run and tie the game, but then struck out Brandon Nimmo and got JD Martinez on a fly.

Gil left after 5 innings and 91 pitches in a 1-1 tie. His line: 5 IP, 4 hits, 1 run, 6 K’s, 1 walk. His ERA drops to 3.10.

3. Tonkin Allows HR to McNeil — Game Winner

Michael Tonkin came in for the 6th. Tonkin was with the Mets — twice — in April of this year.

And the Mets jumped him — Pete Alonso led off the 6th with a double, and a batter later, Jeff McNeil hit a 393-foot homer to center for a 3-1 Mets lead. The eventual game winner.

4. Verdugo & Volpe Combine for a Run

The Yanks immediately closed the gap in the bottom of the 6th off old friend Adam Ottavino: Anthony Volpe led off with a single, moved to 2nd on a groundout, and scored on a 1-out double by Alex Verdugo.

5. Mets Pen Stifles Yanks Late

And that was the ballgame — the Yankees could not muster a run the rest of the night against the Mets bullpen.

The Yanks put 2 runners on with 1 out in the 7th, as Dedniel Nunez made an error to start the inning, then walked Aaron Judge after striking out Juan Soto; but Ben Rice and Anthony Volpe made out.

Phil Maton pitched a shutout 8th, allowing only a 1-out walk to Austin Wells.

And in the 9th, Jake Diekman walked Juan Soto with 1 out bringing up Aaron Judge — who the Mets had walked all 4 times in the game so far. But Diekman struck out Judge on a 2-2 fastball, and then got Ben Rice to groundout for the old ballgame.
