Soto, Judge, & Giancarlo Go Back-to-Back-to-Back! NY 10 Colorado 3

Aaron Judge hits his 50th homer of the year to give NY a 2-1 lead in the 1st.

The Bronx Bombers bombed early and the Bronx Bombers bombed late, turning a 4-3 game in the 7th into a laugher when Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, and Giancarlo Stanton hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the bottom of the 7th.

Aaron Judge had begun the day’s scoring for NY with a 2-run homer in the 1st inning, his 50th homer of the year, that turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 Yankee lead. NY had a 4-1 lead by the 2nd inning, but Colorado climbed back and pulled to within 4-3 by the 7th.

A pretty good start by Marcus Stroman and excellent relief pitching by Tommy Kahnle and Jake Cousins held the fort until the Yankee cavalry arrived in the bottom of the 7th with the 3 consecutive homers to make it a 7-3 game.

Gleyber Torres hit a 3-run Bomb in the 8th to put the game away.

“It was great,” said Giancarlo Stanton afterwards about the back-to-back-to-back homers. “The crowd was loving it; it was helping us secure the win; all in good fun.”

NY takes 2 of 3 in the series and improves to 77-54 and takes a 1.5 lead over Baltimore in the AL East. Colorado drops to 48-83.

1. Stroman Good

Charlie Blackmon, Colorado’s DH, began the game by working a walk in an 11-pitch at bat against Marcus Stroman. Shortstop Ezequiel Tovar then ripped a shot down 3rd that Jazz Chisholm Jr.made a spectacular, Graig Nettles-esq play on — throwing to 1st on a short hop that DJ LeMahieu could not handle, allowing the runner to go to 3rd.

It went for a single and an error on Chisholm which is down right unfair.

Centerfielder Brenton Doyle then hit a double-play grounder to shortstop, which Volpe fielded, flipped to Gleyber Torres at 2nd — but Gleyber threw a bit wide to 1st pulling LeMahieu off the bag. Doyle was called out for a double play, but then on challenge was ruled safe. The run scored from 3rd in any case — had it been a double play it would not have ended the inning.

3rd baseman Ryan McMahon then hit a grounder to 3rd that Chisholm did botch for a legitimate error, putting runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out — but Stroman struck out 2nd baseman Brendan Rodgers, and got 1st baseman Michael Toglia to line out to end the inning.

For the next 2 innings Suzyn Waldman on the radio referenced that Stroman had been let down by his defense, and he had, but it wasn’t really Jazz Chisholm’s fault that the run scored even though he was charged with 2 errors in the inning — LeMahieu should have been able to pick the short hop on the great Chisholm play. Chisholm’s boot of the grounder and Gleyber’s wide throw to 1st to blow the DP did cause Stroman to get 5 outs and throw 31 pitches.

Given Lead, Stroman Holds It

Given a 2-1 lead by Aaron Judge in the bottom of the 1st, Stroman pitched a shutout 2nd (pitching around a 1-out walk), and given a 4-1 lead by the Bronx Bombers, Stroman pitched a shutout 3rd (pitching around a 1-out double).

In the 4th however, former Yank Jake Cave reached on an infield single with 1 out, moved to 2nd on a grounder, and scored on a 2-out RBI single by catcher Drew Romo.

Stroman got the first 2 outs in the 5th, but then walked Doyle and allowed an RBI double to Ryan McMahon to make it 4-3, before getting the final out.

And that was it for Stroman after 97 pitches; his line: 5 innings, 5 hits, 3 runs, 5 K’s, 3 walks. He gets the win to go 9-6 3.88.

“That (1st) inning got really long on him,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards about Stroman. “I think he ends up throwing 31 pitches — so to be able to navigate and throw 5 important innings and give us the lead to hand off to the bullpen and then the offense extends it late — it was a big outing, when you’re kind of grinding out there.”

2. Judge Bombs Early

After Stroman allowed the run in the top of the 1st, the Yanks got Stroman right back the lead in the bottom of the 1st.

Colorado started 30-year-old, 6’5 lefty Austin Gomber, in his 4th year with Colorado. He came in with a 4-8 4.64 record, and the Yankees pounced in the bottom of the 1st.

Gleyber Torres led off with a walk, and after Juan Soto flied out, Aaron Judge hit a 431-foot Bomb to center for a 2-1 Yankee lead.

3. Yanks Get 4 Straight 2-Out Singles to Make It 4-1 in the 2nd

The Yanks jumped all over Gomber again in the 2nd.

After Anthony Volpe lined out to left, and Jose Trevino lined out to right, the Yanks got 4 consecutive 2-out singles, by Alex Verdugo, DJ LeMahieu, Gleyber Torres (scoring Verdugo), and Juan Soto (scoring LeMahieu) to make it 4-1 NY.

4. Gomber Settles Down; Stanton’s Bat KO’s Ump

But after the 2nd, Gomber settled down — pitching shutout innings in the 3rd and 4th. In the 5th, Gomber walked Soto and Judge with 1 out, and then Giancarlo Stanton got a broken-bat single into left — the bat breaking in half on his rapid swing — the entire top half of the bat coming off and hitting home-plate ump Nick Mahrley in the neck.

Play stopped for 15 minutes as Mahrley was attended to, and helped off the field in a neck brace.

“It was bad; I saw it by the replay,” said Giancarlo Stanton afterwards. “He took it like a champ though. When I was in the box I didn’t hear him groan or anything. He took it like a champ; I think he’s going to be ok; so it’s all good.”

When play resumed, the Yanks had bases loaded with 1 out, but Gomber struck out Chisholm and got Volpe on a grounder to end the inning.

5. Kahnle & Cousins Hold the Fort

Tommy Kahnle came into a tight 4-3 game in the top of the 6th and threw a 1-2-3 inning — strike out, ground out, ground out.

In the top of the 7th — the game still tight with NY up 4-3, Kahnle got a groundout to begin the inning, but then walked Blackmon, and Kirk Cousins’ cousin Jake Cousins came in with his filthy slider to get 2 flyouts and end the inning.

6. Soto, Judge, Stanton Go Back-to-Back-to-Back

Gomber pitched a shutout, 1-2-3 inning in the 6th and left with a pretty decent performance. In the bottom of the 7th, Colorado brought in Jeff Criswell, a 25-year-old rookie righty, and the Yanks pounced.

Criswell got Gleyber to begin the inning but Juan Soto launched a 418-foot bomb to right center and it was 5-3 NY.

Aaron Judge, up next, went back-to-back with a 377-foot homer to right center. NY 6 Colorado 3.

Giancarlo Stanton, up next, went back-to-back-to-back with a 425-foot Bomb to center. NY 7 Colorado 3.

7. Gleyber Adds Insurance

In the bottom of the 8th, Alex Verdugo and DJ LeMahieu had consecutive 1-out singles and Gleyber Torres parked one to left for a 10-3 game.

8. Weaver & Mayza Wrap Up

Luke Weaver pitched the top of the 8th with a 7-3 lead and allowed a leadoff walk but then got 3 batters in a row (strike out, ground out, strike out) for a shutout inning.

Tim Mayza entered pitched the 9th with a 10-3 lead, and allowed a leadoff single but then got 3 batters in a row (fly out, ground out, fly out) for the old ballgame.
